Country Style Self Catering With Breath Taking Sea Views And Tranquility

Bedrooms 3
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom 3 Bathroom One En-suite Oil & Solid Fuel Heating Combined Sleeps 6

The Farmhouse has a modern spacious eat-in kitchen which boasts a typical Irish peat / log burning solid fuel stove which creates a tranquil cosy atmosphere and simultaneously heats the other rooms also. From the kitchen and bedrooms located on the upper floor you can enjoy breath taking views of Ballinskelligs Bay and on a clear day the 'Statue of Liberty' in New York might be possible if you could see far enough.

The heating system incorporates oil and solid fuel which is designed to work simultaneously or one system at a time.

There is a spacious hot press which can be used for airing / storing additional clothing. The benefits of a stone constructed house are that on a warm sunny summers day the house is cool while in winter the house is much warmer than a block built house.

The County Kerry region: The warm influence of the Gulf Stream which passes off the coast has a very positive and pleasant effect on our climate all year round and is home to a sub -tropical vegetation. We never get extremes in temperature either in winter or summer which makes it a very pleasant part of the country to live in.

There are numerous places of both historical and scenic locations to visit in the area.

Daniel O Connell's house in Derrynane, stone fort's, old castle's, Skellig's Rock, Killarney National Park & Muckross House, Arts Centre 'Cill Rialaig,' and Crag Cave Castleisland are just some of the big attractions in the area.

The biggest attraction of all being the breathtaking views from the famous 'Ring of Kerry' which is renowned for its beauty and rugged landscape. It is a natural wonderland of forest, blanket bog, river, lake, sandy beach and hill, including Ireland's highest peak, 'Corran Tuathail'.

The world renowned "Skelligs Ring" has been named as one of the best places in the world to visit.

The Kerry landmark has made it into the top ten regions in the world for travellers by Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2017 guide.

Described in the guide as 'perhaps Ireland's most charismatically wild and emerald stretch of coastline' the 32km Skellig Ring is an extension of the famous Ring of Kerry.

Stretching from Waterville to Ballinskelligs and back around through Portmagee, the coastal gem overlooks Skellig Michael , the ancient monastic island where Star Wars: The Force Awakens was filmed.

Famously, Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley, as Luke Skywalker and Rey appeared on the island in the closing scene of the most recent Star Wars film. Lonely Planet spokeswoman Noirin Hegarty said: The Skelligs Ring should be on every traveller's must-see list.

The Skelligs Ring features tenth on the list of top regions for 2017, which was topped by Choquequirao in Peru; followed by Taranaki in New Zeland; the Azores in Portugal; North Wales and South Australia.

The Dingle Peninsula is also renowned for it's rugged beauty and it was here that the film 'Ryans Daughter' starring Robert Mitchum was made. Slea Head which is located at the far end of the peninsula has some breathtaking scenery to offer.

So what's so special about Kerry? - What sets it apart from other holiday destinations? Well, for a start it has all the essential ingredients; great scenery, genuinely friendly people, lots to do and see, the highest standard of accommodation and numerous first class restaurants. However, it's the things that are unique to Kerry that make it such a popular visitor destination, such as its ancient history, its rich culture, the rare flora and fauna and a genuine pride of place by its people.

Perfect place

  • 5 of 5

We spent ten wonderful days in Tom and Sheila O' Shea's holiday home. This couple were very welcoming and explained how all the appliances worked very clearly. Everything in the house is spotless and beautifully arranged. The kitchen and laundry room are very well equipped as is the rest of the property. The living room has TV, radio and CD player and there are CDs of Irish music to set the right atmosphere.

The evenings were cool during our stay and so we used the solid fuel (peat) stove heater in the living room. Tom was particularly helpful as he came around specially to show us how to light it and use it to heat the radiators and hot water. We appreciated the smell of the peat burning at night. Very cosy. For guests who are not peat fans, it is possible to use the oil heating.

We stayed mostly within a radius of about 20 kilometres and there was plenty to visit. The scenery is absolutely magnificent and the view from the house is beautiful. We spent many moments just watching the changing light over the bay and mountains. Otherwise, there are plenty of walks nearby (Tom and Sheila had recommended some places to visit), and each time the views were splendid.

This was certainly the best property we have ever rented and we would recommend it highly. If we decide to return to Waterville, this is where we would like to go.

cosy cottage with a beautiful sea view

  • 5 of 5

We were 4 People travelling together and stayed for a couple of days in this cosy cottage. One of the highlights the house offered was the oven. The house offers all you need.

Tom and Sheila are really caring hosts !

Waterville is a good starting point to travel the Ring of Kerry.

There is some good restaurants nearby and two little supermarkets.

What you defenitely need is a car ! We were really happy to have a small car because of the narrow roads.

Thank you Tom and Sheila for taking care of us so well !

Waterville Wonder!

  • 5 of 5

We had a truly marvelous stay at Tom & Sheila's vacation rental in Waterville. We enjoyed it so much so, that we chose to do nothing but enjoy the property and the surrounding area for several days, from the week we had staying on the Ring of Kerry. There are trails and walks right outside the front door ... that can be taken on the Kerry Way ... down to the beaches ... or for a leisurely stroll into town. The Ring of Kerry is also just a couple of minutes away via a very short drive from the property.

The photos that are posted on Home Away do not represent the property justly. The house was very comfortable, impeccably clean and extremely well kept. The views from the home offer a fantastic view of the sea and surrounding mountains, as well as rolling hillsides and green pastures.

Tom & Sheila were sweet and accommodating hosts. They were very friendly and quite helpful in supplying us with much needed info on the area, as well as assisting us in our plans for what we wanted to do and where we wanted to visit while there.

Prior to our arrival, we made inquiry in regards to visiting an island we had just recently heard about - - by the name of Skellig Michael. We were pleasantly surprised to find this island was actually located right off the coast near Waterville. When we inquired, Tom strongly recommended that we go, and he even took care of booking our trip to the island, months ahead of our stay.

Our visit to Skellig Michael turned out to be one of the most unique and fantastic places we have ever visited, and very likely the top highlight of our month long visit to Ireland. If not for Tom's high recommendation and helpful advanced booking ... we may have missed out on this wonderful experience all together.

Overall, we enjoyed our time at this property so much so, that my wife was in tears as we strolled the front yard on our last nights stay, knowing the following morning we would be saying goodbye. If we ever have the opportunity to return to Waterville again, we would not hesitate to first contact Tom & Sheila for availability, knowing we would be hard pressed to find better accommodations or more gracious hosts elsewhere.

Perfect house!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights but wished it could have been for longer, there is so much in the area to see and do - the beaches on the Skelling Ring really were stunning. Waking up to the view from the property was an amazing experience. The house had everything we needed, special mention for the power shower which was the best on our trip. Tom was immensely helpful and flexible throughout our stay - great communication. Would happily return.

As we had hoped

  • 5 of 5

We were two couples wanting a west coast experience but within reach of key attractions in Kerry. Tom & Sheila were friendly & obliging. Their house is well presented, clean with an easy to access modern kitchen & laundry. Lots of extra touches. Car required a little out of Waterville but lovely walking areas including to a ring fort - we picked blackberries for our pie at night. The view was beautiful disappearing often as it does, with rolling fog & rain. Great atmosphere!

We stayed at Tom and Sheila O'Sheas rental, the Ardkearaugh House, for a week in August. We have 3 kids ages 12, 9 and 4 and this place couldn't have been better for our family. The house was clean, spacious and the view is so tranquil and peaceful. It was stocked with everything you could need, has cable TV and the beds were comfortable. The kids enjoyed playing in the yard while we looked on from the outdoor seating area. Tom was quick to respond and answer any questions we had. It was a central location for us to travel the ring of kerry and explore. You will definitely need to rent a car as it's about an hour away from Kerry airport. There is a small grocery store in Waterville and some lovely restaurants. All in all, this was the perfect get-a-way and I highly recommend staying at the Ardkearaugh House

Waterville is located on the south west coast of Ireland and offers a variety of interests for all ages. If travelling on the famous Ring of Kerry you will pass through Waterville. In the past it has been frequented by many dignitaries from all over the world. Charlie Chaplin, the silent -movie comic, spent many years holidaying in Waterville at the Butler Arms Hotel and there is a life - size bronze figure of the star on the main street. It has two world class golf courses and many of the top world golfers have played there over the years. The 'Kerry Way' walking route passes through the Village and this is a major attraction for walking groups. Fishing is also a major attraction both on the coast and on the famous 'Lough Currane' and Inny River. Lough Currane is one of the best sea-trout fisheries in Ireland. There are many sandy beaches to swim, sunbathe and relax and in summer time the water temperatures can be quite pleasant.

There are many restaurants and hotels to dine in also.

Other Activities: Equestrian Centre / Outdoor Pursuits / Trips to 'Skelligs Rock' / Kerry Way.

Golf: Waterville Golf Links

Over 100 years old, Waterville is rated among the top 5 courses in Ireland and the top 20 links courses in the world. Links golf combines sand dunes gorse and native grasses, firm fairways, sod faced bunkers and subtle putting surfaces all intertwined by the ever changing weather.

Links land is a geological rarity. Less than one percent of all the courses in Ireland and the British Isles are championship links. Waterville is one of these. It is no wonder that the world’s best players test their mettle here.

Skellig Bay Golf Course

Situated overlooking the majestic Ballinskelligs Bay and set among natural megalithic stonework and indigenous bog deal, there can be few more visually stunning locations for a golf course than Skellig Bay in Waterville. The course opened for play in Spring 2006 and has already been rated in Irelands “Top 50”.

Here the awesome beauty of the Bay hits you full in the face as you play through holes framed by over 8000 yards of ancient “famine” walls.
