About Jeannie Willan
This is Paul and my daughter Emma getting some new garden furniture ready. We're a Manchester-based, Anglo-Italian family. I visited Lake Como while inter-railing and said then "this is a place I could retire to". Imagine my surprise when my then fiancé brought me to see his old family home. We have been spending a part of our holidays here ever since, involving teenage boys, small children and now teenage girls - not to mention a large number of friends and family members. It simply is a place to share. And even after all these years we are still finding new delights and things to do on Lake Como. We love the swimming, the walking, the ice-creams, the food, the music and above all the warmth and tranquillity. It would give me enormous pleasure to be able to talk to you, to answer any questions and help you get the most out of your holiday.
Jeannie Willan purchased this Cottage in 1880
Why Jeannie Willan chose Lenno
Roveglio has been in our family since about 1880 - an ancestor was Mayor of Lenno and the family tomb is in Lenno cemetery. So we have a long-term commitment to both Roveglio and Lake Como. My mother-in-law spent much of the war here - there was no running water or electricity. She and my father-in-law did renovated the main house in the 1970s as a retirement project and later converted The Cottage in 1996 for their own use. We took over the management of the farm in 2006 and since then have been focussed on reclaiming the overgrown woodland, improving the pasture and planting more olive trees. Roveglio has the most amazing views and, because it is uphill from the lake, even on hot days there is a breeze. You do need a car and a bit of confidence to tackle the steep lane.
What makes this Cottage unique
Set in fields in the fresh mountain air, Roveglio is only 5 minutes by car from the village of Lenno, 15 minutes by foot (longer climbing uphill back)! You can st off on mountain walks from the door or just relax and read, smelling the wild mint and hearing the cowbells and crickets, The Cottage has both a dining and a sunbathing terrace, as well an area of lawn and access to the garden. And you are very welcome to visit other parts of the farm - see the animals and taste our cheese and olive oil.

Paradise in Lake Como
The property was absolutely amazing. The pictures hardly do it justice. The drive up the hill was not difficult and we very quickly got used to it... the photos the owners supplied were perfect to lead us to the correct place. Once we got there we could not believe how beautiful it was... both from the deck and its view out toward the lake... as well as a perfectly cozy house that was more than ample for two of us....we didn't even use the lovely bedroom and full bath downstairs. The kitchen was very well equipped and the caretaker Antonella was phenomenally helpful showing us around, putting on the heat when it turned chilly and providing us with fresh eggs and milk from the farm when we ask to buy them. The furnishings were just fine and the bed, which we used in the upstairs bedroom, was very comfortable indeed. But the views out to the lake were astounding and we simply could not take enough pictures to capture what a lovely place this is. We would highly recommend it. In addition the location was perfect a short drive above the town of Lenno, where the ferry to all the major towns like Bellagio stops, and there is a lovely Villa and Gardens to see right near the town. The owners kindly leave a file folder stuffed with brochures describing nearby sights. We only wished we had time in our travel schedule to have stayed longer than the 12 days we stayed. Thanks to Antonella and the owners.
Peaceful, beautiful and away from the crowds
This comfortable home was perfect for our purposes and would work very well for two couples traveling together. The owner’s dicription of the road up to the house is accurate - it is not for the faint of heart. We tried it the first time but after that we chose to leave the car further down the hill and walk up to the house. Angelina was extremely helpful and checked on us every now and then. As he was driving, by her father gave us a lift up to the house a few times ( much appreciated as we had bags of groceries). We enjoyed cooking in the kitchen and enjoying drinks and dinner on the porch with that spectacular view. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms very nice and the whole house clean and welcoming. There are steps from the entrance level (where one bedroom and bathroom is) to the main floor where all the other rooms are. The washer and dryer are in a separate room outside the kitchen door, but the room is well lit and the washer works well. The Greenway is an 11km hike along the lake which we would definitely recommend. We would certainly stay here again(but I would make sure our car had a stronger engine for that final hill ). This would not be a good place for someone with mobility issues. We are in our mid seventies, in good health and also like to hike, so it worked for us and we enjoyed the house very much.
Beautiful cottage with amazing views and very peaceful. A perfect holiday destination.
As a family of 4 (with 2 young children aged 3 and 5) our stay at Roveglio cottage was just perfect.
The place is very peaceful with a beautiful terrace that has amazing views of Lenno and the Lake (perfect for a glass of wine when the kids were in bed!). The farm was great for the children Antonella and her father showed the children the chickens, rabbits and cows, they were thrilled with this and especially fox (who is a dog!)! They are incredibly quiet for farmers and we barely heard them!
The cottage is roomy, light and very clean. I don't think the pictures do it justice. Perfect for a family as it has a lovely big living space (a nice big kitchen, diner, lounge). The children's bedroom was on the first floor, not ground floor as there are steps up to the Villa. This was not a problem at all as there is only a small flight of stairs up to the main living accommodation and master bedroom. We could hear the children from our room but also took a monitor which worked perfectly well for when we were on the terrace.
The drive up is at first akin to a roller-coaster, but you do get used to it! The walk down and back up was too much for us, it took us 20 mins down and 45 back up, this was carrying a 3 year old in 30c degree heat!) but we had no problem parking in Lenno at the Lido or supermarket for the day.
Lenno was lovely, surprisingly quiet, with a nice number of restaurants, access to the lake and beach to swim, both our children did this safely with armbands and loved it! The road train was fun day out to Mennaggio and the passenger ferry at Lenno a ferry ride to Bellagio, amongst other places.
We got a water taxi (10 mins) to the beautiful Villa del Balbianello (National Trust members get a discount) . Again we all thoroughly enjoyed this. The kids found it very exciting.
All in all we had a perfect holiday Jeannie and there was nothing you could do to improve such a beautiful place. Thank you for sharing it.
Beautiful views, peaceful and wonderful
We had a lovely week at the farmhouse. Antonella, the farmer/housekeeper, is lovely and friendly. It was a great base to visit Como, Milan, over the border to Switzerland to Monte Generoso. Leno itself has lots of lovely places to eat and great for a stroll or people watching from a bar. Hired a speed boat to go on the lake (great fun). Lots of useful information in the file in the house, which was very helpful. Jeanie, the owner, was most helpful beforehand and the instructions for the route to the house were really good. We can see why everyone enjoys visiting the farmhouse and this area. Brilliant holiday! Thank you
We love it!
We just revisited this lovely cottage viewing Lenno and the Como Lake. The hill side cottage is very nice and well equipped and the panoramic view absolutely fabulous. Even in the winter time the lake area is such a lovely place with lots of things to see and do and great hiking routes. Can't recommend it enough!
The views are stunning
What a wonderful surprise. The views were spectacular. We enjoyed our meals on the terrace every night even when it was a bit cool outside. The home is clean and well-equiped for cooking. The road was steep but manageable...just part of the adventure. We enjoyed our boat trip to Villa Balbinello. The market on Tuesday was large with good quality products and food. The boat trips to Varennes and Bellagio were very enjoyable. We walked a lot and saw a few weddings. Antonella introduced us to the cows, but the goats were up on the mountain. She bravely used our translator to communicate with us. A fun time. We loved it.
Thank you - I'm glad you had such a good and varied time. It would be lovely to meet another time.
Lenno has its own Lido (private beach and lake swimming, free for children), as well as two small public beaches. 5 minutes drive or 20 minutes walking. There are swimming pools at the Cadenabbia Lido and at Gran Hotel Tremezzo (15minutes drive). Menaggio Lido (north of the town) is the most spacious, with a pool and paddling pool (bathing cap required), play area, small beach and restaurant.
The nearest airport is Milan Malpensa (Milan Linate is considerably further), between 70 and 90 minutes driving time. Bergamo is only a little further and less than 90 minutes driving time. A car is essential - although only 5 minutes from the lakeside, the road up is steep and narrow. Detailed directions will be provided to visitors.
The centre of Lenno is two kilometres from Roveglio. Tremezzo with the Famous Villa Carlotta is approx 8 kilometres to the north and Menaggio a further 5 kilometres beyond this. Varenna and Bellagio are close as the crow flies but the first lies on the east shore, the second on the central peninsula, both reached by regular ferries (car and pedestrian). The medieval walled city of Como is 22 kilometres to the south and Milan some 45 kilometres to the south.
Lake Como offers something for everyone - glamour and retreat for the Hollywood "A" list and other celebrities, beauty, tranquillity and wonderful food, as well as a variety of activities for families. Full details of what is available as well as a detailed description of the amenities of Lenno are available in a file in the Cottage as well as on our website.
