About Bruce & Dorothy McKay
Dorothy & I built our house in West Lothian in 1999, close to Bathgate where Dorothy was born. I am retired and enjoy golfing - being a member at Archerfield on the East Coast. I will happily arrange for guests to play this magnificent course. I also look after the garden - when not golfing! Dorothy is a child-minder and works with our daughter, Laura who, herself, has four children. In total, we have eight grandchildren - the latest born two weeks ago.
Bruce & Dorothy McKay purchased this Cottage in 1999
Why Bruce & Dorothy McKay chose Blackburn
We searched for a number of years for a plot of ground and finally came up with this beautiful rural surrounding. The house is situated in two and a half acres in a lowland crofting designated area which means we are in the countryside in a low density populated area. We have stunning views towards the Pentland Hills & the Five Sisters. We are close to three railways stations providing easy access to both Edinburgh & Glasgow. Edinburgh airport is approximately 25 minutes drive and Glasgow airport 45 minutes. There are many beautiful walks within easy access & entry to National Grid 75 cycle network is five minutes away. The county has many historical and tourist attractions.
What makes this Cottage unique
Livingston Outlet - McArthur Glen - and Livingston Shopping Centre are five minutes drive. We are off the main road but still have access to public transport. The local bridal path runs down the east side of our house so there is always plenty to see as the horses run in the field adjacent. The garden is a haven for wildlife, including kestrels, red kites and buzzards.

We had a lovely time at the cottage. The owners couldn't have been more helpful - even checking on our pup in his cage whilst we were out!
The cottage is equipped with everything you should need and more besides. The walks from the cottage garden were beautiful.
Great location for week in Scotland
The cottage had everything we wanted, plenty of space, very well equipped and perfect hosts. We loved the free parking in Bathgate which made the train into Edinburgh and Glasgow an excellent option. Very convenient location to visit family in Falkirk and an easy journey over the new Queensferry Crossing to Fife. Will definitely return if we want to visit the area again. Thank you.
Lovely setting and well equipped cottage
Owners helpful with great communication. Cottage well laid out and well equipped. lovely gardens with direct access to footpaths.
Well placed and very comfortable
Spent one week here. Very convenient for both Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as the local country side and, slightly further afield, the coast. A very comfortable cottage with everything thought of. Dorothy and Bruce were very welcoming. A massive and very comfortable bed - we slept very well. Easy to get to and easy parking. Would recommend. (Thank you also for the wedding anniversary Prosecco - greatly enjoyed.)
Quiet location. Clean, comfortable and well equipped
Lovely peaceful rural retreat
Spotlessly clean and cosy cottage with all amenities. Bruce and Dorothy were not there on our arrival, but left easy instructions for us to gain entrance to the cottage. Excellent train service to Edinburgh/Glasgow from Bathgate which has a huge free car park. Mon - Fri the car park will be full of commuters' cars, but you can find room to park on the road outside. My wildlife count was one hare and one fox (not at the same time !)
Dear John & Cristine.
Thank you both so much for your very positive review.
Dorothy and I were so sorry your visit was cut short but hope you will find some time in the future to visit us again.
Kindest regards to you both.

There are several magnificent beaches particularly in East Lothian all within a maximum of 1 hour drive. Longniddry - Gullane - North Berwick. The area at Longniddry also has excellent facilities for surfing, windsurfing, etc
Edinburgh airport is approx 25 minutes by car and Glasgow airport 45 minutes. Glasgow Prestwick is around 90 minutes. Car is not essential but desirable. Local transport is very good in West Lothian but much more convenient if you have your own transport.
The village of Seafield is only 1/2 a mile and can easily be accessed by foot. The town of Blackburn is within 1 mile and both Bathgate and Livingston within 3 miles.
Local shops in Blackburn and Bathgate with a large shopping complex in Livingston.
Main banks are in Bathgate and Livingston.
West Lothian is a county full of history with many local attractions. Several swimming pools in the area.
There is a number of restaurants around the area - most of which are in Livingston but Bathgate does have a very good Italian and a couple of pub/restaurants.
