About Dr. Stephan Engel
It has always been my dream to live in southern Spain, somewhere close to the Mediterranean. After 30 years of working for an international oil company, I finally managed to realise this dream, and we are now living in a rural property not too far from Alcaucin. I am a geoscientist by background, with a love for the outdoors and nature in general. Following my retirement, my wife and I have now taken over management of Villa Zalia, and are aiming to provide our guests with a great holiday experience.
Dr. Stephan Engel purchased this Villa in 2013
Why Dr. Stephan Engel chose Alcaucín
Villa Zalia offers you the best of two worlds - peace and tranquility in a beautiful setting and easy access to the cultural highlights of Andalusia or the bustling life and tourist hotspots of the Costa del Sol.

We had a fantastic holiday with our 2 young children. The property had everything that we could want and the location was stunning and peaceful. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Stephan the owner was also very friendly and helpful. Top marks!
We arrived at the villa as a family of 6 & all communication with Stephan was great . The villa has breath taking views of the mountains which you would never tire from watching the sunset every evening in a stunning location , on the ground floor there is a covered terrace with a canopy to keep you from the sun , we enjoyed eating dinner down here with the gas bbq located on the terrace too with the plunge pool where we enjoyed dipping in to cool off in the evenings hot temperatures . The kitchen is fully equipped with absolutely everything you could require including extras of cool box & a cool bag & some supermarket shopping bags included all very handy on a self catering holiday , the beds were comfortable the 3 bathrooms very handy when 6 people are trying to shower . The journey to swimming pool at the bottom of the garden is quite steep but very manageable , we took the cool bag down with drinks in & kept it in the shaded area , there was even a socket so the children could recharge iPads throughout the day. The location is up a dirt track but completely fine with a steady drive , the peace & tranquility at the villa was surreal the tinkling of the goat bells in the distance was a lovely sound . We would defiantly recommend Stephan’s villa & the area , we enjoyed day trips to the coast & to the nearby lake & enjoyed lazy days in the villa . Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful villa .
Lovely villa in rural location
Villa is well equipped with AC throughout as well as all utensils and appliances. A very comfortable space in which to relax with lovely views across the valley. As described elsewhere the road out is a dirt track but is fine if you take your time. Lower pool is larger and better and the walk down is fine, just make sure you are not running up and down to the villa. The smaller pool is good for a splash and cool down of an evening and there is shaded area beside to relax in. There were 3 of us but plenty of space if you used all six beds.
In the local villages there are plenty of bars and places to eat and the English supermarket will give that sort of stuff if you want it.
Fantastic family villa with outstanding mountain views!
The villa was superb for our family of 2 adults and 5 children (14, 11 and 10). Lots of living space and fantastic balconies (accessed through the lounge and 2 of the bedrooms) where we could dine or sit and relax and enjoy the outstanding views!!! We were lucky enough to see the meteor showers most nights and couldn't have had a better setting.
There is another eating area below where we made full use of the gas bbq and the smaller pool in the evening.
The villa was well equipt and had everything you would use at home. The beds were comfortable and the living space worked really well.
We were undisturbed by other villas or people. Most days we heard the therapuetic sound of goat bells but only once spotted them in the far distance.
The larger pool is, as described, a walk down a path, followed by a set of steps and a steep path. Another review stated that the last part of the path was too steep for wearing flip flops. We, and our children found the path was really NOT a problem from start to finish and happily went up and down it during the day every day. We thoroughly enjoyed our days spent by the pool taking in the views and enjoying the quiet surroundings.
The local market in Alcaucin on a Saturday morning was lovely for fruit and veg. We walked from the villa to the market in roughly 20 minutes.
The water park 'Aquavelis in Torre Del Mar was a great day out and not too big!
A meal on the promenade in Torre Del Mar in the evening was inexpensive and had a lively atmosphere.
We also travelled to a beach called Calle del Canuelo just past Nerja which is popular for snorkelling. Get there before 11am to park and then you can get a minibus for 2 euros pp
down the steep hill.
We all had a really great holiday and found so much to do in the area but equally enjoyed our time at the villa around the pools. We will definitely come back to this villa again.
Thank you Stephan for your great communication and helpfulness. We really did have the best holiday at Villa Zalia!
A perfect hideaway! This is a spacious, comfortable villa in a stunning, remote location.
We wanted a peaceful holiday in an authentic Spanish location and that is exactly what we got at Villa Zalia.
The villa has 2 double & 1 twin, good sized bedrooms, with comfy, clean beds & plenty of storage space for all your clothes, although there's a fully equipped laundry room if you like to travel light. There are 2 large bathrooms (1 en suite). Everything was really clean with plenty of towels & bathmats. The large kitchen has all the essentials including dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave and a small dining table. The huge living room has a large corner sofa, TV and a larger dining table and leads out onto a balcony, which runs the length of the back of the villa. This large balcony is where our family ate most evenings, watching the awesome sunsets over the mountains. None of our many photos seem to do justice to this fantastic scenery!
There are 2 pools at Villa Zalia, a small "plunge" pool at the back beside the terrace and a large, "not-quite-infinity" pool at the bottom of the garden. Warning! the bottom of the garden is literally that! The access is via a steep, slippery, rough path which is NOT suitable for flip-flops, small unaccompanied children or frail grannies!! Otherwise it is worth the effort and has a bamboo covered, shaded gazebo if the sun does get a bit too intense.
The drive is incredibly steep, so we parked just outside the gate & saved the hire company a new clutch! Access from the village is an adventure, being along a very dusty, narrow, bumpy mountain track. Watch out for the herd of goats in the evening - you can just about hear their bells clancking in the olive groves all day over the noise of the cicadas. The small, unspoilt village of Alcaucin is typical of the region with narrow streets and white houses with a friendly bar/restaurant in the centre and there's a street market on Saturday mornings. Like most of rural Spain, the few small shops close for siesta, so we advise an initial "big shop" at Lidl in Velez-Malaga at the start of your stay.
Days out require a bit of forward planning, as you have to factor in the remote location but there are some great days out if you're prepared to travel about 1/1.5 hours each way (eg.The Alhambra). Torre del Mar is less than 1hr and has a huge, long beach, which is gritty not sandy, with plenty of sunbeds for hire and several beach bars.
We chose this villa for a chilled out, relaxing family holiday and that's exactly what Zalia delivered. Can't wait to come back!
A lovely well located house, everything you need for a peaceful retreat
We had a lovely time at this house, it’s private and peaceful with amazing views of the mountains and lake. The house is fully equipped with everything you need, it’s a real home from home,
We only used the large pool, which is a short walk down the hill to the lower garden, lovely pool with a shaded area to the left.
The village is only a 5 minuet drive away, with a few bars and restaurants, all very good value.
I’ll definitely be visiting this house again, after being there for two weeks I didn’t want to leave.
The well maintained beaches of Torre del Mar are just 20 mins away. For the more adventurous, take a slightly longer drive towards Nerja and explore the beautiful sandy coves near Mara. These offer the clearest water, excellent snorkelling and some fantastic scenery.
Use of a car is essential! The nearest airport is Malaga, some 60 km, first along the coastal motorway then inland on a good road. The last 1 km is on a graded, well maintained road which serves many properties in the area.
We will provide detailed route description from Malaga airport to Villa Zalia upon completion of the reservation.
Alcaucin is a picturesque small town, the centre of which is a 5 min drive or 20 min walk from the villa. It offers a variety of local restaurants and bars, banking and shopping for day to day supplies. The El Ingenio Mall, 20 mins towards the coast, contains a large modern supermarket, designer stores, fast food etc.
The beautiful cities of Malaga, Granada, Antequera are just an hour away. Cordoba, Sevilla and Ronda require a slightly longer drive, but can easily be visited on a day trip.
Villa Zalia is not just for summer, but can be the starting point for exciting vacations all year round. The two pools and nearby beaches are the places to be during hot summer days. Spring, autumn and usually mild winters are the times for sightseeing and more physical activities. For the nature enthusiast, active hiker or geocacher, Villa Zalia offers paradise. The possibilities during the cooler seasons are endless. You can begin your hike at the house, a 20 min walk will bring you to the edge the National Park. Or, a short drive will take you into the Alcazarra area, a picnic site and starting point for hikes to the top of the Maroma. The Zafarraya pass, on the way to Granada, offers beautiful scenery, mountain flora and fauna and marked hiking trails. If you want to wander further afield, try the National Park of El Torcal with amazing limestone formations, the hot springs in Alhama de Granada or the lakes of Fuente de La Piedra with thousands of breeding flamingoes in spring. And, as mentioned earlier, the cities of Granada, Antequera, Cordoba and Sevilla make for excellent day trips.
Guide books, maps and brochures are at the house. Please feel free to take them out and use them for your excursions.
