About Deborah Wheatley
This cottage was bought to be my personal bolt hole when visiting England and also a home to share with my friends and family as I am currently living in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I have dual British and American citizenship having moved to the USA 17 years ago. The cottage is my personal pride and joy and it will be a pleasure for me to share it with you.
Deborah Wheatley purchased this Cottage in 2013
Why Deborah Wheatley chose Saffron Walden
I fell in love with the cottage in 2012 while visiting Saffron Walden; it was so pretty with roses around the door and only a 5 minute walk from the town's restaurants and shops. I had lived in Saffron Walden before moving to Chicago, USA in 1999 and now live in Fort Lauderdale , Florida. I am very happy to have bought the cottage with a view to my husband and I retiring there in a few years time. I love Saffron Walden with its historic centre and market place and the cottage's location, though in a very quiet street, is only a few minutes from the shops, market place, pubs and restaurants making it unnecessary to drive anywhere when in town. The cottage is only 25 minutes drive from the centre of Cambridge and a 45 minute train ride to the London Underground.
What makes this Cottage unique
If you are looking for a romantic period cottage to spend a week or weekend this cottage is an ideal match. 15th century charm with brand new plumbing, kitchen and bathrooms. It's location between Cambridge and London make it an ideal base for visiting the UK as the Audley End train station with its regular service to both cities is a 10 minute drive away making it unnecessary to drive into the cities. It is also perfectly situated for touring the East Anglia area including Suffolk and Norfolk. The cottage oozes character from every beam and has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Audley End Park is only a 5 minute walk away from the cottage meaning you can enjoy the English countryside as well as all that the town itself offers.

Drake cottage was ideal.
We enjoyed every angle and low beam, together with the high quality renovation and updates. And although right in town, its still quiet and private.
Perfect little cottage. Beautiful setting
Everything you could want for a romantic weekend away
Very characterful cottage
Very cosy quirky cottage. Had a great time in a home from home with everything you could want.
Dear Ann, Thank you so much for your lovely review and do let me know if there is anything we can improve on; as it is only by hearing from our guests that we get to improve. Come back and visit us soon. Deb
A Historic Delight
A wonderfully comfortable stay in a delightful town!
Thank you Lucy.
Be aware, parking for two cars was never available.
Dear Reta, thank you for your lovely review and so glad you liked both the cottage and the town. I am so very sorry that you weren't able to park two cars right outside the cottage but unfortunately it is on street parking and therefore the cottage as all homes in the medieval quarter does not have it's own allocated parking. All the neighbours cooperate very well with parking in the non through street, but if someone has a visitor staying then one of the parking spaces in front of the cottage does get taken unfortunately. I do hope that you found the short cut to Swan Meadow car park and that it didn't spoil your stay too much. For the benefit of future guests public parking is only a 5 minute walk away and parking is free there on Sundays and Bank Holidays and only £3.50 for 9 hours . You can usually park at least one car outside the cottage but no guarantees unfortunately.
Everything about the cottage was perfect for us..although we both bumped our heads on upstairs beam even though this is the second time we have stayed!! it felt like home and to be in the town is a treat. Two busy days and then a relaxed cosy couple of a evenings, just the thing to unwind. Thankyou Deborah!
thank you for your kind review and so glad that you had a wonderful stay. I have a theory about bumping your head on those upstairs landing doorways and it's always those that I bump my head on too. They're low enough that you do have to duck slightly and because each one is a different height you assume one is like the other and misjudge them every time. Think the only way to avoid it is to stretch your hand out and upwards; that way I've managed to avoid bumping my head. Hope you get to try this technique out on your next visit :-) as we do love welcoming back guests who have stayed before. Having said that my 6'5" son in law managed to not bump his head once on a two week stay - how I will never know. Best wishes, Deb.
Pretty little cottage
Olde world charm in the friendly town of Saffron Walden.
Good services nearby (pubs, restaurants and shops all within walking distance). It forms a good base for exploring Essex, South Cambridgeshire and Suffolk.
The cottage worked well but mind your head if you are more than medieval height!
Thank you for taking the time to write us a lovely review and so glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you didn't bump your head too often. Unfortunately, those beams on the landing do mean you have to duck; good job the rest of the house's ceilings are tall enough to accommodate all but the 6' 2 and above without stooping. My son in law who is 6' 4 managed to never bump his head last Christmas but goodness knows how, as when I get to stay in the cottage I always manage to bump my head at least once on the landing even though I'm obviously only too familiar with their height.
Hope we can look forward to welcoming you back to Drake Cottage on another occasion.
Best wishes Deb
