About Deborah Wheatley
This cottage was bought to be my personal bolt hole when visiting England and also a home to share with my friends and family as I am currently living in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I have dual British and American citizenship having moved to the USA 17 years ago. The cottage is my personal pride and joy and it will be a pleasure for me to share it with you.
Deborah Wheatley purchased this Cottage in 2013
Why Deborah Wheatley chose Saffron Walden
I fell in love with the cottage in 2012 while visiting Saffron Walden; it was so pretty with roses around the door and only a 5 minute walk from the town's restaurants and shops. I had lived in Saffron Walden before moving to Chicago, USA in 1999 and now live in Fort Lauderdale , Florida. I am very happy to have bought the cottage with a view to my husband and I retiring there in a few years time. I love Saffron Walden with its historic centre and market place and the cottage's location, though in a very quiet street, is only a few minutes from the shops, market place, pubs and restaurants making it unnecessary to drive anywhere when in town. The cottage is only 25 minutes drive from the centre of Cambridge and a 45 minute train ride to the London Underground.
What makes this Cottage unique
If you are looking for a romantic period cottage to spend a week or weekend this cottage is an ideal match. 15th century charm with brand new plumbing, kitchen and bathrooms. It's location between Cambridge and London make it an ideal base for visiting the UK as the Audley End train station with its regular service to both cities is a 10 minute drive away making it unnecessary to drive into the cities. It is also perfectly situated for touring the East Anglia area including Suffolk and Norfolk. The cottage oozes character from every beam and has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Audley End Park is only a 5 minute walk away from the cottage meaning you can enjoy the English countryside as well as all that the town itself offers.

Dream cottage in the heart of Saffron Walden
Everything we expected and more, this was the perfect retreat for our family at Christmas. We really didn’t want to leave! Drake Cottage is a special place set back in time. Sitting at the fireplace very early one morning, i wondered who may have sat in the same place hundreds of years before, to warm their toes! The walk to Audley Park, which surrounds the beautiful Audley End estate, is minutes from the front door and lends a feeling to being here, that only the experince can reveal. A little further away, my son and I enjoyed an early aftrnoon stroll through the Bridge End garden closeby.
It’s a wonder that this cottage has survived all these years and the owner has maintained the old charm of the place, while at the same time incorporating a modern standard of comfort. It is very well equipped with most of the things one needs for a comfortable stay. The property manager, Lucy, was absolutely wonderful. She not only bought a fresh Christmas tree, but also had it decorated beautifully for us. All we had to do was switch on the lights! She was very responsive to our needs. Thank you Lucy, we appreciated your effort very much. We look forward to staying again at Drake Cottage!
Dear Linda, thank you so much for your amazing review of Drake Cottage and so glad you enjoyed Christmas in Saffron Walden. When I stay at the cottage I often start looking up all the things that have happened in history since the cottage was built.
Glad you got to walk in Audley Park and got to Bridge End Gardens- did you find the hedge maze ; I always love going round it even though I know my way into the centre by now. Lucy always does a great job of looking after our guests and I will make sure she sees your review. Come again to visit us soon.
We stayed, as two couples, sharing this lovely character filled cottage. We arrived to find everything spotless clean and comfortable. Just a few minutes from shops and the excellent market plus a short drive to Duxford and Cambridge was a perfect location. We had a very enjoyable weekend! Thank you.
Thank you Leigh for your lovely review and glad you enjoyed your stay at Drake Cottage and hope that you will return on a future occasion. Visiting the market is one of my favourite things to do when I'm at the cottage too :-)
Everything you could wish for and more!
Chocolate box cottage, adorable inside... Spotless, well equipped, top quality bedding, towels, furnishings. Nooks and crannies, oodles of character, original beams everywhere...a child's delight..our 3 yr old sat in the nook on the stairs most of our time in Drake Cottage falling it his bat cave! Very child friendly. Perfect secure safe garden. I could go on waxing lyrical!! 2 minutes walk to town square, 5 mins to playground and grass maze which the children loved! So much to do! Lucy is fabulous... We will be back!!
Dear Jane, So glad you and your family enjoyed Drake Cottage and Saffron Walden. That little nook on the stairs is just perfect for a little one to sit in - hope he enjoyed finding all the ducks around the cottage and all the duck stories that are on the book shelf. Lucy is a brilliant Keeper of the Cottage ; we have been friends now for 27 years. You do have to come back though, as I think you may have missed out on the hedge maze in Bridge End Gardens - my two loved it when they were little and still love it even though they know their way in and out by now. Come back and visit us soon :-)
Lovely little period cottage with all modern facilities
The cottage was just what we expected, cute and full of character, but with all those modern facilities that make a holiday cottage so much better like the dishwasher and washing machine. The stairs were interesting and could be a challenge for those with mobility problems. The cottage is well placed for town, just a few minutes walk to centre. Parking was easy. We have a lovely stay.
Thank you Nicola and so glad you had a great stay. The stairs and the beams are undoubtedly charming and quirky but unfortunately we would have to agree the cottage is not recommended for those with mobility problems. It is great being able to stroll into town and explore the market.
Perfect little cottage. Beautiful setting
Everything you could want for a romantic weekend away
Drake cottage was ideal.
We enjoyed every angle and low beam, together with the high quality renovation and updates. And although right in town, its still quiet and private.
Thank you John for your very kind review and so glad you loved Drake Cottage as much as I do. I think that's what I love the most about it ; the fact that it's tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the town and yet you can be right in the middle of it all within a 3 minute walk. Come back and visit us again soon.
