About Deborah Wheatley
This cottage was bought to be my personal bolt hole when visiting England and also a home to share with my friends and family as I am currently living in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I have dual British and American citizenship having moved to the USA 17 years ago. The cottage is my personal pride and joy and it will be a pleasure for me to share it with you.
Deborah Wheatley purchased this Cottage in 2013
Why Deborah Wheatley chose Saffron Walden
I fell in love with the cottage in 2012 while visiting Saffron Walden; it was so pretty with roses around the door and only a 5 minute walk from the town's restaurants and shops. I had lived in Saffron Walden before moving to Chicago, USA in 1999 and now live in Fort Lauderdale , Florida. I am very happy to have bought the cottage with a view to my husband and I retiring there in a few years time. I love Saffron Walden with its historic centre and market place and the cottage's location, though in a very quiet street, is only a few minutes from the shops, market place, pubs and restaurants making it unnecessary to drive anywhere when in town. The cottage is only 25 minutes drive from the centre of Cambridge and a 45 minute train ride to the London Underground.
What makes this Cottage unique
If you are looking for a romantic period cottage to spend a week or weekend this cottage is an ideal match. 15th century charm with brand new plumbing, kitchen and bathrooms. It's location between Cambridge and London make it an ideal base for visiting the UK as the Audley End train station with its regular service to both cities is a 10 minute drive away making it unnecessary to drive into the cities. It is also perfectly situated for touring the East Anglia area including Suffolk and Norfolk. The cottage oozes character from every beam and has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Audley End Park is only a 5 minute walk away from the cottage meaning you can enjoy the English countryside as well as all that the town itself offers.

As good as it gets
Beautiful and charming cottage in a lovely village. Quiet street, but at the same time real close to local shops, the market etc. Both in the village and in the nearby area there are many places to visit. We've had a great time. On the stairs and upstairs you have to watch your head because of the ancient beams, but we got used to that real soon. So don't let that stop you from renting this place! We have seen many holliday-cottages and this is one of the finest.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review of Drake Cottage and so glad you enjoyed your stay. I have to agree it is so nice that you can walk to the market , shops and restaurants from the cottage. Even though I always manage to bump my head at least once on the landing those old beams are so part of its charm.
Come back and see us soon. I will pass on your review to Lucy, our housekeeper as she is responsible for the wonderful welcome our guests receive and meticulously high standard of housekeeping. Best wishes, Deb
Such an amazing location. Right in town and close to everything. We had a great time.
My favorite place in Saffron to stay. It is the same feeling as The first time I stay there. Beautiful, precioso y muy confortable
Without a doubt the shortest review we've ever received but as one of our much loved repeat guests the three words you wrote are so valuable to us. Doesn't get any better than excellent and everything fantastic. Hope to see you back at Drake Cottage very soon.
Lovely cottage, excellent location
The cottage has been recently renovated to a high standard, and is warm and cosy. It is well equipped. Bath robes are provided as well as nice fluffy towels. The housekeeper is friendly and helpful. It is a very short and pleasant walk to the Fry Gallery, Bridge Gardens and the centre of town.
You need to be aware that the upstairs rooms are quite small, with various low beams to look out for, and the stairs are small, steep and twisty. We managed OK (aged 60, 64, 69 and 89!) but do take note of the warnings given in the description if you are tall/large or not very mobile. However the structure can be considered part of the overall charm of the cottage.
Thank you for your lovely review and so glad you enjoyed your stay at Drake Cottage. I try very hard to emphasize the low beams on the landing and the narrow twisty staircase so hope you coped with them ok . You are so right though that those oak beams and that twisty staircase make the cottage so very charming. Glad the new towels and robes were to your liking : I tried to choose the nicest I could find : I always choose things for the cottage that I would like to use myself . Hope to see you on a future trip to Saffron Walden.
Our kids and we adults loved our stay at Drake Cottage with lots of cute details to be discovered. Everything was very clean, the kitchen well equipped. The rooms were larger than what we expected
from the pictures, however, for tall people it might be difficult to get up the stairs.
Thank you for your kind review and so glad you enjoyed your stay at Drake Cottage. The stairs and landing can be a bit challenging for those who are very tall; however my 6'5" son in law somehow managed to stay at the cottage without once bumping his head ; still not quite sure how he managed that as I always manage to bumpy my head at least once whenever I get to stay. I will pass on your complements to Lucy regarding her wonderful housekeeping; she is the best. Come back and visit us soon.
