Spacious lounge with 37' flatscreen TV (with WiFi casting) satellite (with many German & Italian channels) DVD and HiFi (with large selection of discs) baby grand piano, and guitar. Spacious fully tiled bathroom boasts a corner jacuzzi with retro style shower over, wash basin, vanity unit, washing machine and a WC which happily accepts toilet paper. The front courtyard is the perfect place to take breakfast and say "kalimera" to the neighbours. Steps lead up to the roof garden with mountain views, shady rustic pergola, drinks fridge, soft lights and CD player. Great place to enjoy the cool of the evening with a carafe of local wine.

Resorts : Haraki Bay / Agathi Beach: At 4km, Haraki Bay is your nearest resort. Leave the car in the square, wander down past the church, and one of the most beautiful horseshoe bays in Greece will open out before you. Take a walk along the pedestrian only promenade with its single row of laid-back tavernas and friendly family run restaurants. The bay is overlooked by the ruins of Pheraklos Castle, which provide a dramatic backdrop when lit up at night. During the day, some tavernas will offer you free use of their sunbeds and parasols if you make good use of their bar facilities!

Also at 4km are the soft golden sands of Agathi Beach, backed by mountains and sand dunes. The sea is warm, shallow and clear, providing safe swimming for all, and great snorkelling. Sunbeds and parasols are available to rent. It doesn't get overcrowded, and there is a choice of 3 licensed marquee style-tavernas serving everything from cold drinks to a 3 course meal at very reasonable prices. Perfect family beach resort!

A free basic welcome pack is provided for your arrival, or the kitchen can be stocked to your order at cost, leaving you more time to enjoy your stay.

An introductory tour of the village and the two nearby resorts is provided free on request, and you will find guide books, information and maps in the house should you wish to venture further afield.

Local Transport : A car is highly recommended for your stay, though not completely essential. Two well maintained bicycles are provided free of charge. Hitch hiking is still a good way to get around the island during the day.

The bus services through the village are regular (hourly) if not entirely punctual, and will take you to Rhodes Town, Lindos and all points between for just a few euros.

Safety advice............

Motorcyclists beware! Wear helmets, and spend a few Euro extra on a trials bike, or at least something with full sized wheels. Scooters and step-throughs have a tendency to fish-tail without warning when the roads get dusty.

Steer clear of quad bikes, they are NOT fun; they are underpowered and unstable.

About Martin Kerry

50 something former technician. In 2006, I went in search of a little bit of paradise, and found it. As well as the Old Olive Press, I have refurbished two other houses in Malona, and I now take care of 6 other holiday rental properties in the village for English and Greek owners. So much for early retirement !!!

Martin Kerry purchased this house in 2006

Why Martin Kerry chose Malonas

The Old Olive Press was a derelict when I found it. However, it had a bit of history about it. Following a devastating earthquake in 1887, Malona and the neighbouring village of Maseri were completely destroyed. The villagers were persuaded to stay and rebuild by the local priest, using stone from the castle at nearby Haraki. The Old Olive Press was one of the first new buildings constructed in 1888, helping to re-establish the local economy, and the village of Malona.

What makes this house unique

Being situated on one of the oldest lanes in the village, the houses on both sides have courtyards, giving a good feeling of openness and space. The lane is entirely residential, and is not on a 'through route' to anywhere, so there is no traffic, and space to park close by. The commercial centre of the village is a 200m walk, as is the village square, where festivals are held throughout the year. I developed the roof terrace in 2007 to take advantage of the cool evening breezes and great views of the mountains. In late summer and autumn, the breeze brings with it the smell of wild herbs and pine. There is also a drinks fridge, soft lighting, and a CD/USB player, so after dinner you can settle down for a seriously relaxing evening.

Local character and charm, cosy and comfortable in a quiet location

  • 5 of 5

This self contained spacious cottage suited our needs well. It was well equipped with a small courtyard at the front for early morning breakfast outside and a lovely cool, shady roof terrace that caught the breezes for lunch and later. Nothing was too much trouble for our host and owner, who lived just across the road, so was accessible without being intrusive. He even lengthened the bed for my tall husband!

The village of Malona is about ten minutes by car from a safe sandy beach, and about 20 minutes from Lindos, 40 minutes from Rhodes Town. There was a supermarket in the village and bakery, a restaurant and bars, all within easy walking distance. The people were friendly and we felt as if we were living amongst the locals.

The air conditioning worked well and we had all we needed, including wifi.

We had a relaxing quiet time and, with our rented car, managed to see most of what the island offered during our two week stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Sue. It's always good to know that our guests have enjoyed their stay. Given notice, we always try to accommodate special requirements, and on this occasion, a 2.5 m bed was an interesting challenge. We look forward to seeing you again in the future ( and I'll hang on to the conversion kit for other tall guests ! ).

A pleasent village home

  • 5 of 5

After staying in the Olive Press with my wife for a month, I can say the many excellent reviews are warranted. Whether you are planning a beach vacation or looking for a comfortable base to explore the island, this home is a good choice. The owner, Martin, is a genial sort and his concern about providing a comfortable stay is sincere. Thank you Martin.

We totally agree with all the other reviews. Martin's house and the location are fantastic and Martin is a brilliant host, really helpful but also non intrusive. The communication before and during the visit was excellent and we really appreciated the personal touch. This is an owner who really cares about his guests and their having a good stay. Highly recommended

Best vacation ever.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here years ago, and while looking around the site I remembered I'd never left a review! Yikes! We had such a lovely time in Malona and were so well taken care of. The house is wonderfully cozy and gorgeous. Everything we needed was there, and Martin was very kind about showing us around the area and suggesting good places to eat and things to see. We stayed with our son who was a toddler at the time. He was enchanted with the beach and pleased that there was a piano for singing along with and DVDs for watching on the one rainy day we weathered while there. The property is within an easy distance of two excellent beaches where we spent the majority of our time. We did travel into Rhodes City and into Lindos, but honestly we wished we had just stayed in the immediate area. It was infinitely more relaxing and fun than traipsing around with a million other tourists in the higher traffic areas. The town of Malona itself is a gem. When we were there, at least, there was a truly lovely restaurant on the main street where old men sit and play cards and you can order delicious food to either eat there or take back to the house which is an easy walk away. Everyone in the area was so kind, remembering us from the day before and being super sweet to our son. We honestly couldn't have had a nicer time, and we hope to someday be able to return.

Rustikt och fint hus i by med lugn atmosfär.

  • 5 of 5

Tack Martin! Vi kommer säkerligen att återvända....

/Marie & Malena

Alles super

  • 5 of 5

Agathi Golden Sands / Haraki Bay
Car: recommended

Malona is a quiet unspoilt village set amongst orange groves, 5 minutes drive from the golden sands of Agathi Beach, and the beautiful bay of Haraki, overlooked by Pheraklos Castle. The ancient capital of Lindos and stunning St.Pauls Bay are only 15 minutes drive. Half way up the eastern coast, Malona is the perfect base from which to explore the whole island.

Less than 60 minutes in the car will find you exploring the battlements of Rhodes Town in the north, wine-tasting on the western slopes of Mount Attaviros, or marvelling at the skill of the kite-surfers who come from all over the world to catch the waves at Prassonisi on the southern tip of the island. Also ideal as a base for hiking or cycling, a five min walk will see you spotting honey buzzards on a quiet mountain road, or scrumping oranges as you wander the old farm tracks.

The village has a good restaurant, 3 small bars, 1 bakery, 4 mini markets, an English speaking pharmacist and a post-office.

Golf: Afandou Golf Course is approximately 15 km north of the village just off the main road. The fairways can be a little on the brown side at high season, but the greens are kept reasonably green. Not exactly St Andrews, but if you can't go a week without a round, it's there. And yes, it does have a nineteenth hole !
