Why Mrs Rebecca Ramsden chose Goriano Sicoli
We were looking for a small house in Italy and chose Abruzzo because it was so much more reasonably priced than Tuscany. The region is so varied, from rolling fields of poppies and sunflowers in spring, to snow-capped mountains. Our hill-top location is a bit of both! We fell for the village and the property's location right by the castle walls.
What makes this House unique
We love the local restaurants, the excellent priced food and wine, but most of all we love the fact that it's really 'rustic' - basic accommodation in a tucked away village location. We enjoy a drive to the 'local' lake Lago di Scanno - it takes around 40 minutes to drive but it's worth it for the amazing scenery on the way, and to sit on the lakeside pebble beach with a glass of Prosecco.

Lovely & Friendly
The property is better than shown on the photos. Very comfortable for 2 people. The town has a pasticceria, a fruitteria, a bar, a small store called tabacchi,a train station, buses that run from town to town, and food trucks that come selling various things like clothing, household items, cheeses, and food items. However, a car is recommended.
Secluded escape from the hustle and bustle
Lovely little house in a picturesque, traditional Italian village. Beautifully clean, well equipped. Huge comfy bed with a fabulous view. Nice modern bathroom with good shower. So peaceful and unspoilt. Bar Centrale provided lovely espressos and was a great place to sit out and watch the village. The bakery was open at 8.30am every morning for fresh baked croissants and delicious Italian pastries. Great base to explore surrounding areas. Day trips to Scanno (very pretty town and Lake Scanno (take your towel and sunbathe the day away), Sulmona (buy some confetti) and L'Aquila.
Il Girasole restaurant in the village is lovely as is Bar De Lisa in Castel di Leri, about 4 miles away, run by Carla who speaks English.
I would highly recommend this property, the owner was helpful and gave us information before we went and it was a perfect place for a get away.
Goriano Sicoli - Review
We had a wonderful time staying at this property. The owner couldn't have been more helpful, providing us with a map, advice and directions. The property was in a fantastic location with incredible views over the valley from the bedroom balcony. It was also spotlessly clean and really well equipped. We'd recommend both the restaurants in the village, and also the (fish only) restaurant 'da Gianni' in the nearest village, Raiano. Eating out is very cheap and the local food and wine is great. The area is full of things to do, including for children, from taking a boat out onto the beautiful Lago di Scanno to hiking along the many well marked trails in the Majella National Park. Highly recommended!
House in Goriano
We were very impressed with the cleanliness, value for money, facilities and location of this property. It was beautifully situated in a lovely mountain village and very central for visiting the different national parks in the area. The owner was friendly and helpful and provided a useful contact in case of problems who proved very helpful when the electricity went off (just a temporary problem). Would recommend this location for a couple who like an away from it all holiday as this is a very quiet location and is particularly suitable for hikers as there are many glorious walks nearby. A very enjoyable holiday.
Lovely little house in typical village
The house has everything you need to stay some days to travel the Abruzzo and to calm down in a very beautiful village. The host gave us a lot of useful information and the key was send to us by post in advance, which worked out very well! If you want a typicall italian village experience, this is the place!
Approx 40 mins drive to little beach towns such as Pineto and Silvi.
Car Hire needed. From Rome Ciampino (Ryanair) it's around 1h 30mins hours drive to the village using excellent toll roads outside of rush-hour, from Rome Fumicino (Jet2) it's around 1h 50mins. From Pescara (Ryanair) airport, it's around 40mins drive. 1 mile outside the village is the train station on the main Rome-Pescara line, but it's a tiny station with no taxis or footpath to the village!
Villages itself has bakery, corner shop, cafe, restaurants = 2 mins walk
Local villages with cafe, shops, ATM = 5/6 miles
Out of town air conditioned shopping centre with large supermarket, free parking, pizzeria, ATM = 13 miles (good opening hours)
Local town Sulmona with all facilities = 16 miles
The nearest villages are Raiano, (around 12 mins drive down a steep, bendy hillside road) with a supermarket, ATM, cafe, local shops, petrol station, bars, small restaurants; or a quicker flatter journey is to Castelvecchio with cafe, ATM, a few shops and supermarket. Almost all local business shut at 1PM. Sulmona is a large town, a 20 min drive, with ancient buildings, bars, gelatos, shops, gorgeous!
