Cottage in Villefranche de Lonchat, close to Lac de Gurson, Dordogne, Aquitaine, France - Peaceful Location, Short Walk To Village And Swimming Lake
About janis seymour
As teachers working overseas and with July and August available as a long holiday, we were able to begin our dream of renovating a barn in France in the summer of 2001. We have been able to establish a family base where we spend every summer with our 2 children and enjoy a relaxed vacation. Each year we have gradually improved our barn and recently moved onto the renovation of Gite Megella which was completed in 2013 and is adjacent to our property. We have tried to provide a home away from home for our guests.
janis seymour purchased this Cottage in 2001
Why janis seymour chose Villefranche-de-Lonchat
A perfect location; 1hr 15mins drive from Bordeaux International Airport, 40mins drive from the smaller Bergerac Airport, 30mins drive from Libourne train station with connections to Paris (3 hours on the TGV) and we are in rural France surrounded by vineyards and central to the many attractions of the Dordogne region.

Great location and brilliant for travelling with a small child
Great location near the village and the swimming lake. Comfy house with everything you need for a relaxing stay and a great base for exploring the area. We particularly appreciated all the equipment and toys for our one year old.
Great location, very quite. A lovely French Gite.
Lovely spot in a quiet hamlet. Very near to the lake which is great for swimming in on the hot summer days. The place itself is very quaint and its very well equipped and has everything you need, down to the kids toys which kept our 2 little ones entertained.
Janis and James, the hosts, were very good also at helping out if there was problem, especially when we had the emergency of a bottle opener that went missing!!
The local village is worth a look and every Friday evening in the evening they have a night market with a disco so you can sit and eat with the locals and try out the local food and wine.
The courtyard of the place can feel a little cramped if your sitting out in the evenings but it did have the benefit of keeping our 2 little ones caged in, and safe so they could play outside.
Nice little touches like the bottle of Rose in the fridge when we arrived were great also.
All in all its a great spot, very quiet and a good location to explore the surrounding Dordogne area.
Beautiful property in a beautiful part of France
We enjoyed an excellent week at the property. The property is in a hamlet halfway between the beautiful village of Villefranche and Lake Gurson and provide both pleasant strolls to each and their facilities. The courtyard is an idyllic place to have a meal and a glass of wine in this part of the Dordogne that has retained its original French characteristics.
Beautiful property - amazing location - great for families!
We had an idyllic week here and loved the property, setting and owners. The property is completely private and safe, with a walled courtyard that our young children could potter about in without us worrying about them escaping! There were multiple toys left out for them to play with, including outdoor toys, a train track, bath toys and even a special kids' loo seat in the children's bathroom. It's a 5 minute easy cycle ride to the beautiful Lac de Gurson, a gorgeous swimming lake with a beach, two cafes, park and canoe hire. We spent every day here, even after a full day out, as it was so convenient and easy to get to. In the village there's a market every Friday evening in the summer which we loved - a really sociable affair to give you a taste of French life and a chance to eat some tasty local food and drink some local wine. This is an easy walk away so no need to drive! Lots of places to visit for sight-seeing nearby too, plus the River Dordogne is a short car trip away and you can canoe down it or swim in it at various spots. This is a really special place and we can't recommend it enough.
We are delighted that you enjoyed the gite to it's full potential. We specifically try to meet the needs of young families, to allow total relaxation in a comfortable and well equipped home. It is always thrilling for us to see happy memories being made in this beautiful part of France.
Beautiful gite, very well appointed nr lovely lake
We had a lovely stay at Gite Magella after being on the road and staying in a different hotel each night for several days. It was lovely to relax for a few days in the gite and make use of all those wonderful appliances we were in need of - washing machine, large fridge, gas stove etc! The kitchen had everything you could possibly need even for a much longer stay (including a lovely chilled bottle of Rose, which was very much appreciated after a long drive that day!).
Lovely lake within walking distance with a cafe serving light and main meals, wine, beer and children's food. Canoes and lovely for swimming. We went down on the first evening and it was really stunning and peaceful at dusk. Lots to do there during the day.
Very quiet, peaceful spot but within easy reach of St Emilion, Bordeaux and large shops etc at Montpon.
The owners are very friendly and approachable and spoke to me on the phone before our stay and recommended various places to eat and things to do. Very much appreciated.
All in all an excellent stay, thank you very much! We look forward to staying again next year.
Thank you for your comments, we try really hard to ensure that you arrive to find everything you need.
Lovely Gite and location
Fantastic stay, we thoroughly enjoyed it, very well equipped Gite. The only downside was the enclosed courtyard was to enclosed for us. It felt a little claustrophobic at times as there was no view. The lake nearby is fantastic we spent many enjoyable days there. Great location to explore the Dordogne and the local village is lovely. We were lucky to be there for the local fair which was very enjoyable. Great hosts.
Thank you for your comments. I hope that the location & general peacefulness compensated. You were excellent guests.
There is a man-made freshwater lake which is an easy and pleasant short walk. It has a sandy beach and a separate fishing lake. There are several casual eating places located around the lake with a popular beach cafe/bar. You can walk around the lake, take a pony trek, play tennis, sunbathe or paddle a canoe. The more active can run a safe circuit around the lake and back to the gite on the single track country roads. The beach provides much fun in the sun.
1hr 15mins drive from Bordeaux International Airport, only 30mins drive from the smaller Bergerac Airport, 10mins from auto route at Montpon, 30mins drive from Libourne train station with connections to Paris (3 hours on the TGV) We recommend having a car.
Take a short walk to the village for boulangerie, mini supermarket, bar and restaurant. A short walk in the opposite direction will take you to the Lake/ beach.
The nearest hypermarket is in Montpon, 15 mins drive.
The village of Villefranche de Lonchat is within walking distance. You will find
a very small supermarket/boulangerie where you can pick up all necessities and early morning croissants, baguettes or pain au chocolat. It is advisable to check opening times and be early in the morning or order in advance. There is a second, smaller corner shop, again, check opening times. The village has a small and very pleasant hotel with a restaurant for formal dining and a cafe/bar for more informal drinks, coffee or a basic lunch. This is a popular spot for a mid morning coffee or evening pastis. Next door is a cafe/bar, very popular with inside or outside seating areas. All of these are located around the village square with an old church on one side and the Mairie on another. There is an excellent post office, pharmacy, ATM and a doctor surgery a few streets out of the square. There is a small weekly food market on Tuesdays and on most Fridays throughout the summer there is a popular Friday night market with a bar, food and wine from local vineyards.
The nearby town of Montpon will provide you with a large hypermarket where you can do all your food shopping. A bank for foreign currency, a large weekly Wednesday market which is worth a browse, a few large boulangeries and several cafes and bars. There is also a pizza take away. You can canoe on the river, stretch your legs in the park, take a picnic, sunbathe on the small man made beach or take a short cruise on the electric boats. There are several restaurants in the area worth a visit and a very helpful tourist office.
