Cottage in Villefranche de Lonchat, close to Lac de Gurson, Dordogne, Aquitaine, France - Peaceful Location, Short Walk To Village And Swimming Lake
About janis seymour
As teachers working overseas and with July and August available as a long holiday, we were able to begin our dream of renovating a barn in France in the summer of 2001. We have been able to establish a family base where we spend every summer with our 2 children and enjoy a relaxed vacation. Each year we have gradually improved our barn and recently moved onto the renovation of Gite Megella which was completed in 2013 and is adjacent to our property. We have tried to provide a home away from home for our guests.

Set in peaceful little hamlet
10 - 15 minute walk to the beautiful little village of Villafranche-de-Lonchat. A lovely old property with everything you could wish for, Janis (the owner) has prepared a small map of beautiful places to visit, she seems to have thought of everything and was only too happy to help us with any questions we had.
Pretty gite in a beautiful area
The gite had everything we needed for a lovely stay and it was easy to bike to the nearby lake which was perfect for swimming.
We can't wait to return!
We had a lovely stay here. It is in a beautiful part of France. Our children loved the local swimming lake, as did we! The gite felt like our home and everyone felt very relaxed and happy. Both Janis and James were very helpful and welcoming and were on hand if we had any queries. Would higly recommend - the gite is very child friendly with a lovely private courtyard. Thank you for our lovely stay.
So delighted you had such a relaxing time.
Coopertons @ Villefranche
Lovely property. Very well-equipped, extremely comfortable and ideal for those travelling with a little one. We had a great time. Thanks to Janis and James for their excellent hospitality.
Lovely, French Gite
A lovely gite with character within walking distance of the local village, Villefranche-de-Lonchat. Everything you needed during a family holiday was provided in the gite with very clean appliances including a fridge/freezer (with much needed ice cube tray), dishwasher, washing machine and an airer to hang the clothes out. There was enough towels provided for showers and swimming in the local Lake Gurson and much appreciated fans in every room. There was a lovely bottle of local rose wine in the fridge on arrival and leaflets and suggestions of what to do in the area.
Being a family of five, we found there was enough room for us all to be comfy and have a bit of your own space. The quiet, private courtyard with table, chairs, umbrella and a BBQ was a lovely space to relax.
We all enjoyed our stay and would love to stay when the weather is cooler to enjoy the fire in the lounge area.
It is our aim to provide a relaxing home from home to allow guests to enjoy the immediate area. A real pleasure to meet a family ready to embrace what we offer.
Lovely recently renovated gite in village edge location
The property is lovely with all the modern provisions you could wish for, but in a lovely old building with lots of character - there are some great pictures in the gite of the building prior to renovation.
The gite is in a lovely quiet location, it's pretty much the last building in a small hamlet on the outskirts of villefranche de lonchat, which takes 10 minutes to walk to and has a bakery, small general store and a few restaurants (the one next door to the general store is marvelous and has a lovely back garden you can eat in on sunny days). There is also a nice lake about 10 minutes walk in the other direction which has casual cafe style eating and a bar.
The gite has a nice private courtyard, which is a real sun trap and meant that we literally never ate inside once in our whole week stay! The gite also benefits from off-road parking, so whether you are in your own car or a hire vehicle you can be sure it's not going to come to any harm.
This is a lovely property in a lovely location, which I would highly recommend, I am already considering booking another trip here in a few months time!
The owners communications were great, which made arrival and departure a really easy experience. They were also really thoughtful, providing not only bath towels but also beach towels in case we wanted to swim in the nearby lake, which also has a nice man made sandy beach. They also provided helpful little touches like some dishwasher tablets, which shows an extra level of thoughtfulness.
There is a man-made freshwater lake which is an easy and pleasant short walk. It has a sandy beach and a separate fishing lake. There are several casual eating places located around the lake with a popular beach cafe/bar. You can walk around the lake, take a pony trek, play tennis, sunbathe or paddle a canoe. The more active can run a safe circuit around the lake and back to the gite on the single track country roads. The beach provides much fun in the sun.
1hr 15mins drive from Bordeaux International Airport, only 30mins drive from the smaller Bergerac Airport, 10mins from auto route at Montpon, 30mins drive from Libourne train station with connections to Paris (3 hours on the TGV) We recommend having a car.
Take a short walk to the village for boulangerie, mini supermarket, bar and restaurant. A short walk in the opposite direction will take you to the Lake/ beach.
The nearest hypermarket is in Montpon, 15 mins drive.
The village of Villefranche de Lonchat is within walking distance. You will find
a very small supermarket/boulangerie where you can pick up all necessities and early morning croissants, baguettes or pain au chocolat. It is advisable to check opening times and be early in the morning or order in advance. There is a second, smaller corner shop, again, check opening times. The village has a small and very pleasant hotel with a restaurant for formal dining and a cafe/bar for more informal drinks, coffee or a basic lunch. This is a popular spot for a mid morning coffee or evening pastis. Next door is a cafe/bar, very popular with inside or outside seating areas. All of these are located around the village square with an old church on one side and the Mairie on another. There is an excellent post office, pharmacy, ATM and a doctor surgery a few streets out of the square. There is a small weekly food market on Tuesdays and on most Fridays throughout the summer there is a popular Friday night market with a bar, food and wine from local vineyards.
The nearby town of Montpon will provide you with a large hypermarket where you can do all your food shopping. A bank for foreign currency, a large weekly Wednesday market which is worth a browse, a few large boulangeries and several cafes and bars. There is also a pizza take away. You can canoe on the river, stretch your legs in the park, take a picnic, sunbathe on the small man made beach or take a short cruise on the electric boats. There are several restaurants in the area worth a visit and a very helpful tourist office.
