Cottage, near Penrith and Ullswater, Cumbria, England - Pretty Location, 3 Miles From The Lake District National Park
About Jackie Clark
I am a retired primary school teacher. My great aunt (by marriage) was Beatrix Potter and my family have lived in the Lake District for generations. The cottage is my second home and I hope you enjoy staying there as much as my family do.
Jackie Clark purchased this Cottage in 1954
Why Jackie Clark chose Skelton
Laithes Mill Cottage was my parents' home and my father ran the wood mill business from 1954 until 1966 when he died. My mother continued to live there and our family all visited regularly. It is a special place, tucked away in an idyllic location with very many family memories.
What makes this Cottage unique
It is cosy and welcoming. The large gardens are a real asset and to be enjoyed by visitors. Dogs are very welcome.

Lovely country cottage
Fabulous cottage, excellent location to explore local area.
Secluded Cottage in Lovely Location
We found this a very convenient base from which to walk the Lakes. You have the convenience of great facilities in Penrith, yet we could drive to a different lake each day to enjoy our walking.
The cottage is large and has an enormous garden with a stream at the bottom. The caretaker (Will) was a real country character and showed us around his sawmill next door.
The interior is fine. Rustic and 'grandmotherly' perhaps. If you like shiny clean and modern, this is not for you. But as a family with children and dogs it was perfect for us.

Beautiful cottage large garden great for our dogs all round very happy
I'm disappointed to have to give a bad review as Jackie was so lovely, the only good thing about our stay was the garden. When we arrived the house was freezing, William barely said 2 words unless we asked him about anything we needed to know. There was out of date milk in the fridge and nothing provided as a welcome, the cutlery, dishes, glasses and cups all had to be washed before use. The place hadn't even been cleaned, there was animal hair all over the floor and the place generally smelt like dog. Due to bad weather the garden flooded slightly on Monday, which resulted in the sun room also having puddles in it and wet patches on the roof. When we spoke to William about this on departure he had noticed it the week before but not said anything to us about it. The whole place needs updating to be honest, the door near the kitchen has a big gap down the side letting all the cold in so makes it pointless having the heating on as the place doesn't really get warm at all.
Sad to say we will not be returning to Laithes Mill Cottage again.
Great house for the price we paid and lovely place to stay!
We had a very nice few days away here! Jackie was very helpful to sort out the booking and to get hold of if we needed any information. William was very nice when we arrived he showed us round where everything was and gave us some wood for the fire. The house it’s self was very chilly when we arrived but then we did visit in November so of course it will be cold! But the heating and the fire soon warmed it up (it cost us £20 for the water and heating which we were happy to pay because we had it on nearly all the time). The dogs loved the garden it was good because we could just let one of the off to do his own thing but we had to keep one on the lead because there were gaps so she could of got out. The house it’s self was a very lovely house and would stay again, the only few things we have to say was about maybe getting a bigger tv as the one in there was quite small as there were four of us in the front room and getting a bigger bath as it’s quite a narrow bath but other than that we loved it a very homely feel about it! Thank you Jackie 😊 highly recommend to anyone whose looking for somewhere to stay around the lakes!
Thanks again all the best
Lovely cottage, Lovely area, Lovely garden
Lovely cottage, but found the single beds very hard. Some comfortable seating in the lounge would make a difference. Apart from these couple of negatives we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and especially enjoyed the company of William the caretaker who was helpful and made us feel very welcome. We would definatly be happy to return and have no hesitation in recommending this cottage for any family who would like a relaxing break.
