The Perfect Location
This property is in the perfect location if you are looking for a seaside holiday (whether that be for coastal walking, swimming, surfing or lazing on the beach). Mortehoe is a very pretty coastal village just outside of Woolacombe and offers plenty of eating establishments in the event that you don’t want to cook for yourself - 2 pubs, an excellent fish and chips takeaway (where you can also purchase lobster, prawns and other shell fish) and an upmarket Thai takeaway which also sold upmarket takeaway puddings (I can recommend the sticky toffee pudding!) There is also an additional hotel/restaurant opposite the post office that we did not get an opportunity to try. Parking was easy - we purchased a parking permit in advance from North Devon District Council. The car park is no more than a 1 minute walk from the cottage. The cottage itself is very well appointed and accommodated 4 adults (2 parents and 2 grown up daughters) very well indeed. I would highly recommend this property for holiday rental.
Comfortable cottage in lovely village
We felt at home in Old Post Cottage straight away. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed and there was plenty of storage. The owners Rich and Emma sent us all the information we needed in advance including the parking permit we would require. My tip would be to print out any essential info as I could not get a signal coming into the village to view the documents. Inside the cottage the WiFi was great although I could not get any signal on O2 so could not receive or make calls. I later found spots in Mortehoe that worked so no problem. Everything is conveniently near to the cottage - pubs, shop, post office, takeaways and the coastal path walk. It was wonderful being able to walk around without needing to get in the car. We had a couple of rainy and cool days but the central heating in the cottage meant we kept warm at all times. We very much enjoyed our stay.
Lovely, clean cottage in a convenient position with everything required for a comfortable stay.
This is our return visit to the Old Post Cottage after trying some other places in the area, and it won’t be our last!
Once again we enjoyed the village location and the everyday amenities which are, literally, on the door step. The cottage itself is well presented and clean and has everything for a week long stay with two very small children. Since we were last there, five years ago, it has been freshened up, not that it needed it, and is clearly a much loved cottage with helpful and approachable owners.
you misled us
Convenient location but excessively maloderous from damp and the adjoining takeaway kitchen. Had a member of my family been asthmatic the damp could have caused significant problems. To not tell people of the damp when advertising the property then put a comment asking people not to complain once they have arrived is cynical /patronising.
I’m very sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy your stay in Old Post Cottage - but I’m also, I have to say, surprised. The cottage is just off the village square where there is a pub, a church, a (very good) fish and chip shop and a cafe selling home-cooked food to take away. It is simply untrue to state that the cottage “adjoins” a takeaway, as you have conceded in correspondence between us since your visit. (I notice that in the long and entirely positive comments your wife left in our visitors’ book she describes our proximity to these amenities as “a luxury” and the food available as “delicious”.) Your comment about damp is perplexing. Our housekeeper checked the property from top to bottom the day your review appeared, and found no damp. We called our next guests to ask if they had noticed any problems, and they hadn’t. You have since stated that the damp smell you encountered was located only under the kitchen sink. We have now checked there several times and have found no problems. It is, frankly, a bit of a mystery. I can state with some confidence that the cottage is perfectly safe for asthmatics, since I am one. Although there was no damp when you visited it is true - as we describe in a booklet in the cottage - that we have at times found small patches of damp (our cottage is about 500 years old, in a clifftop village on one of Britain’s wildest stretches of coast). We always deal with it as quickly and thoroughly as humanly possible, however, which is why your review led to such a sustained flurry of activity on our part - albeit activity which left us scratching our heads. You are of course entitled to your opinions - and we are genuinely sad to read that you didn’t enjoy your stay - but I have to say I think the title of your review is deeply unfair. We had no conversations prior to your visit. You booked through HomeAway and didn’t reply to my email asking, in advance of your trip, whether you had any questions. So I had no opportunity to “mislead” you. You are, I assume, referring to the online description, which I guess you feel doesn’t adequately describe the property. I have checked it carefully - because it is in our interests, as well as our guests’, to market the cottage as honestly and clearly as possible - and I think there is simply no grounds to consider it misleading. But if you are a potential guest reading this, please call or email me with any questions and I will - as always - try my best to answer everything as fully as possible.
Really quaint, peaceful cottage, tastefully decorated and in a great place
Fabulous location in Mortehoe near a great cafe, good village shop and fabulous takeaway and chip shop. Really nice decor.
Warm and comfortable.
The twin room was great for our kids, as were the books and toys for kids which were very welcome. In fact for families this place is perfect. It is right next to the South West Coastal Path and we walked every evening after dinner along the coast as the sun set- fabulous stuff.
The double bed was comfy but would be even better if a bit more luxurious.
We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend to parents of younger children.
Thanks for your helpful review, Helena. We think you're right about the double bed and so we have just replaced the new but slightly firm mattress you used with something rather more luxurious. We hope you visit again - and sleep soundly when you do!

Property had everything we could possibly need and was warm and cosy.
Only managed 2 nights. We had to cut our visit short as the Beast From The East - the snow - arrived and much more was forecast so we decided we needed to go on Wednesday. It was a good job we did because we've been snowed in at home for the past 2 days. We did manage 3 days around Mortehoe though and had a wonderful time. Our OAP legs have never worked so hard up and down cliffs.
Serves us right for coming away in February, but the cottage is to be recommended. Top Class. Thank you.
Rockham Beach is a 20-minute walk from the cottage. Morte Point, an area of outstanding natural beauty, is almost on the doorstep.
Woolacombe, the adjacent village, is famous for its perfect sandy beach which in 2015 Tripadvisor judged the best in Britain (and one of the five best beaches in Europe).
Other great surfing beaches like Croyde, Saunton and Puttsborough are just a couple of miles away.
Barnstaple is the closest rail station (11 miles). Mortehoe is a four-hour drive from London.
