Cliburn Signal Box is a quirky, upside down, luxury holiday cottage. Once a working part of the Eden Valley Railway line, the Signal Box nestles at the bottom of Whinfell Forest, between the market towns of Penrith and Appleby, in the beautiful (but often forgotten) Eden Valley. It is the perfect location to relax, enjoy, explore and with very little light pollution it is just perfect for stargazing.

About Mr Gavin Matier
We moved into the property on 1st October 2004, leaving city life behind, in search of a more peaceful and fulfilling life, for both ourselves and our two children, Elliott and Jasmine. Gavin, born in Northern Ireland, left Limavady in 1987 to study at Bradford University. There he qualified as a Pharmacist in 1991 and is the Pharmacy Manager at Sainsbury's Penrith. Wendy, born in Tyldesley, Manchester left in 1989 to study at Bradford University. There she qualified as a Pharmacist in 1994 and is now the Pharmacy Manager at Green Tree Pharmacy, Kirkby Stephen. Whilst working in Leeds, we met in 1992 and married 25th August 1996. In July 1999 Elliott was born and in February 2002 Jasmine was born. It was at this point we decided to leave the city life behind and moved to Cliburn.

Why Mr Gavin Matier chose Brougham
Wendy and I fell in love with both the location and character of the building when we first saw it. We loved it so much we live in the Station House beside the Signal Box and decided to renovate it, so others could enjoy it as much as us.
What makes this Cottage unique
We live beside the Signal Box all year round and often forget just how lucky we are to live here. To us peace, tranquility and seclusion are the norm. We step outside our back door into beautiful countryside and a 50m walk has us strolling in Whinfell Forest, where we regularly see the local red squirrels, roe deer, owls, buzzards, pheasants, great crested newts and an abundance of other wildlife. At night little light pollution means that we can stargaze and if that wasn't enough, a short drive and we are walking up one of the many fells or playing in one of the lakes. What more could you ask for?

Quite simply... perfect.
It was the perfect base for us, and a proper great getaway location. Absolute silence at night, and pitch black dark too which living in a big town, was a huge plus for us.
Lovely and warm, and it’s current well finished look was wonderfully blended with the character of the past.
I’d recommend the Signal Box 100 times over.
Thank you so much for your positive words and we are so pleased you found The Signal Box to be your perfect base.
Thank you for being great guests and we hope to see you again in the future.

Quirky little gem!
Really enjoyed our stay at the signal box, it's in a great location to use as a base to explore the lakes. The signal box has been very nicely renovated to a high standard and has everything we needed. Lovely views from the upstairs living room and a table and chairs outside to enjoy our breakfast outside. The bedroom is cozy and the shower was excellent! The kitchen was well equipped and the wine and biscuits were a lovely welcome. Definitely recommend!
So pleased to hear The Signal Box was a great base for you and that you enjoyed your stay.
We loved having you and would love to see you return in the future.

Our stay in a signal box

A delightfully quirky property in splendid countryside
The signal box looks just as it does in the pictures. The main room upstairs is light and warm with a good size TV (once we had found out how to work it!). The kitchen is well appointed and has all the basics you need for cooking and eating. The bedroom is cooler and darker than the upper room but comfortable with good cupboard and drawer space. The en suite bathroom is small but has all you need.
The location is very rural - we enjoyed watching the local farmer ploughing his field on Sunday. Horse riders trot along the lane and there is plenty of birdlife that can be heard (if not always seen) in the woods next door. There are no shops or pubs in the village so you have to drive for those facilities but we knew that when we booked. Penrith and Keswick are very accessible via good roads and the central Lakes are a bit of a drive on rather more challenging routes but that is all part of the fun. We visited lots of castles, ruins and ancient sites, as well as local towns. All were delightful. We had one lovely sunny day which showed how wonderful this part of the world is but even in the drizzle places like the Kirkstone Pass and Honister slate mine are impressive. Altogether an interesting and enjoyable week.
We are so pleased you enjoyed The Signal Box, the location and the attractions in the surrounding area.
Glad you enjoyed your week and we would love to welcome you back.

Beautifully renovated property. Everything you could want in gorgeous countryside
Stayed for a long weekend and will definitely be back. There is a well equipped kitchen with a welcome bottle of milk and wine. The living room has great views and is lovely and comfortable. We were looking forward to using the log burner but the underfloor heating was so good we never got the chance to.
We walked for miles as the area is beautiful but there is plenty of places to go to by car if walking is not your thing.
So pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay at the Signal Box and enjoyed walking in the surrounding area. Lovely to hear that you plan to come back and we would love to see you return.
