The Camel Estuary on Cornwall's rugged and romantic Atlantic north coast is one of England’s most desirable, yet understated, up-market hideaways - for everyone, not just for the two princes, prime ministers (all regular visitors) let alone The Establishment. Whether it is cliff-top hikes, fishing, surfing, sailing, visiting historic houses (Lanhydrock, etc), the Tate Gallery at St Ives, the Eden Project or just savouring the seafood and other tastes of Padstow (gourmet capital of the UK, made famous by TV chef Rick Stein) or Nathan Outlaw in Rock, King Arthur’s Castle (Knights of the Round Table legend) and lots more, there’s something here for you too. And there’s classic British links golf: within 5 minutes drive is St Enodoc, recently rated no 35 in the world outside the US. St Petroc sleeps 9-11 in a typical 1920s English seaside holiday house. It has a lot of charm, but is also run down and one often can sense the damp, especially out of summer. The description 'run down' also means that some parts of the house do not look clean, despite the fact that they have been cleaned: they are just showing their age - and yes, some of the paper is off the wall!! So if you are looking for a modern villa (and/or not a sense of adventure), this is not the place for you. But, once here, most of our guests (in some cases, once over the initial reaction to the foregoing) don't want to leave. Read the reviews!

This house has been in our family for over 60 years: despite the 'run-down' label we have done some careful updating of the facilities, including a second bathroom and new storage heaters. We have also upgraded some of the furniture, and added broadband wi-fi and two flat screen TVs.

So why do we get more repeat tenants at this property than at any of our other properties? Perhaps you should come and see for yourself...

Recommended for...

Highly recommended for weather-beaten surfers, golfers, sailors and cliff-walkers and, out of the peak summer season, groups seeking a bit more of a roof over their heads compared to tents at the local camp-site for not much more.

Not recommended for the elderly, nor families with young children.

Expenses Policy

All-inclusive pricing policy for all rents at £500 or more per week (pro rata), with a weekly electricity allowance of £100.

Linen & Towels

We do not supply linen and towels, except by arrangement: £12 per set (£15 for the one double bed), plus £2 (£3) to make up, plus £15 (for our caretaker's laundry travel costs).

Guest Access

The whole house is accessible to guests, excepting a few cupboards for owners' possessions. We decommissioned the old external-access WC many years ago, having converted one bedroom into a second bathroom. We have also closed up the front door, enabling us to use the porch for storage, and the property is entered through the kitchen door; both doors access the main parking area, so this doesn't cause any particular inconvenience.

LARGER GROUPS

There are additional per head per night charges for larger groups, which are included in your quote from HomeAway. These reflect additional staff and admin costs with larger groups and are based on the number of different people who stay overnight at the villa during the course of your stay. If, during your stay, more different people than stated during the reservation process stay overnight, we will charge you for the additional amount, by deduction from the security deposit.

It has been in my family for over 60 years, is wonderfully located and, being sited at the highest point in its locality, has outstanding views, especially over the Atlantic with two headlands and two small islands framing the view to the midsummer ocean sunset. I have been coming to this house since I was in my mother's womb, so it feels like home...

  • The bathrooms are very simply furnished - Bathroom 1 was built in 2002 and bathroom 2 is rather old. The shower in bathroom 1 is electric. There is an outside loo, but please note that it has been decommissioned.

Notes:
The furnishing is simple and much of it a little worse for age, but, yes, we really do have extremely fast wireless broadband and the other more hi-tech equipment noted. The two rooms most used are the dining room, which opens onto the terrace, and the picture window sitting room, which makes the most of our amazing view over the Camel Estuary, with both headlands (Stepper Point and Pentire Point) and both islands (Newland and Gulland) clearly visible. From around Easter until mid September the sun sets straight into the sea... If you do not like traditional UK seaside holiday houses built in the 1920s, and prefer modern accommodation, don't come to this property! N.B. The house is semi-detached only by virtue of the garage adjoining the next door house (the former coach house).

First find the corkscrew.......

*Great location just above Polzeath with easy access to the coast path.

*Stunning Views across to Stepper Point from one bedroom, dining room and sitting room.

*Plenty of parking on the grass.

*Good communication with Arnie before and after, and with Linda about key pick-up.

First impressions were not good, the windows had ripped net curtains and we picked the key up from the outside loo which was pretty grotty. BUT do read on because we had a great holiday! I've mailed Arnie about those points and they are being dealt with.

The property is definitely shabby but that suited us as we have lots of children and didn't have to be too careful. The beds were comfy and there was plenty of hot water. We took a lap top which was easy to use with the Wi-Fi. The Rayburn was great for drying clothes and the dishwasher and washing machine worked well.

The kitchen is basic but Carter's and The Oyster Catcher are both within walking distance and do good food. Carters has ping-pong, pool tables and a good juke box. Oyster Catcher had live music the night we were in and a pool table. Kids were made welcome in both.

The house was chilly on arrival but if you leave the kitchen door open and stick the storage heater on, take plenty of layers and socks you'll be fine. An early gin and tonic and several glasses of red wine helped with that too! Heating costs for us for a week were around £90.

The kids managed surf boards up and down the coast path but it's probably easier to drive down and drop them off. The beach cafe was handy for a breakfast (loved the Veggie in a bap one) and the kids love the orange juice machine.

Easy coast path walk to Rock to catch the ferry to Padstow and fairly easy walk continuing up to Stepper Point (about 12 miles round trip)

I'd certainly go back. It was a great base for a family with lots of children of varying ages, older ones could come and go as they pleased if the rest of the family was out.

The bungalow needs a fair bit of TLC outside and in but if you love the outdoors and have surfboards, muddy boots and kids it's perfect.

Relaxed place very near two fab beaches

Yes there was condensation on the windows but this is a cozy house was ideal for a few friends and our kids. We could walk to the beach, let the kids get soaked in the rockpools and sea and the walk home was so quick that we could avoid and cries of cold wet feet. The little heaters really warm the place quickly and it was well equipped with pots, pans etc, fridge, dishwasher and washing machine. Great selection of cafes in Polzeath and a decent Spar shop for the essentials. Mary was very helpful too. A perfect 'Twixmas' break.

AMAZING!

St Petroc is an amazing venue for all sort of people, with a very homely feel and HUGE garden it was the perfect place for us. A short 7min walk to the beech made it even better. When looking though the photos while booking I thought one of them had been photo shopped (though the living room window) but I can assure you this is real. The view is really that great! Would go again!

Fantastic and as advertised

We had a brilliant stay at St Petroc over a long weekend in July. There were a group of 11 friends staying and although as per the description the property is not in the best of conditions we all felt this added to the charm of the property and it was more than adequate for our needs. The house has a beautiful garden which is a perfect location to watch the sun set and is only a short walk to the beach where we went surfing. Overall I cannot recommend this enough, the booking process was easy and the house was set out exactly as we requested by Mary. Many thanks again for helping give my friends and I a fantastic holiday.

Stunning views & fun atmosphere

St Petroc boasts beautiful views and a lovely private garden perfect for BBQs and relaxing the the sun. It is in the most wonderful location for walks, beaches, Rock and Polzeath. The house itself is in a pleasantly loved and used state, and I'm sure it has seen decades of fun. I would highly recommend St Petroc for unfussy fun stays.

Golf: This house is especially suited to golfers. There are many courses within one hour's drive and the closest (5 minutes) is the most famous: the seaside links of St Enodoc, recently ranked 23rd in the world by Golf World, is an absolute must for any serious golfer, and great fun for any player. The course runs along the edge of the Camel Estuary and around St Enodoc Church, in recent years made famous as the resting place of poet laureate Sir John Betjeman, who wrote poems about the course; the famous 'Himalaya' bunker is reputed to be the highest in the world. Other courses in the area include Roserrow (5 minutes). The house is owned by the editor/photographer of the acclaimed Pocket Guide to Golf Courses series (covering Spain, Portugal and Ireland, with more in the pipeline). A free copy of one of these books is given to every golfer staying at the house. We are extremely well connected within the golf world, and can arrange tailor-made golf or golf and culture holidays, from a self-catering basis right through to a tour hosted by Greg Turner or other golf playing/course design/photography professionals, as suits the requirements of the party.
