About Esther Dodd
We are a married couple living in Manchester. We have 2 grown-up sons, our elder son is married and lives in Abu Dhabi and our younger son lives in Manchester. We have owned Mount Cottage for 9 years and for the first 5 years we kept it solely for personal use. After many requests from friends about the possibility of renting the cottage for holidays we decided to offer our delightful country retreat through Owners Direct for others to enjoy as well.
Esther Dodd purchased this Cottage in 2008
Why Esther Dodd chose Wray-with-Botton
After owning a caravan for 5 years in this area, which we both love for its peaceful and relaxing effects, we decided to buy this cottage nearby so that we could reap the benefits throughout the whole year whereas the caravan site closed during the winter. Winter produces fantastic scenes with snow on the hills and frost on the hedgerows. The wild spring and summer flower displays along the hedgerows and in the fields are a joy and in autumn there are sloes, blackberries and rose hips aplenty to gather for gin and jam making. Walk a short distance uphill from the cottage and you can see the sea at Morecambe and the spectacular mountains of the Lake District. A rarely used bridleway runs past the cottages and into the field beyond and there are many public footpaths all round the area.
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottage is located 10 miles east of J34 of the M6, through delightful countryside. Lancaster is an easy 14 miles from the cottage and Lake Windermere is a scenic 45 minute drive. The cottage is 1 of 9 properties that were originally converted in 1987 from farm buildings into holiday accommodation. The cottages are set back from the road and are accessed via a driveway which ensures a quiet and relaxing atmosphere where only the sounds of wild birds and animals can be heard. Over the past 30 years most of the cottages have been bought as permanent residences. As we have spent most of our weekends in the cottage over recent years we know the area very well and have many friends amongst the residents. It is a friendly, relaxing place to unwind and recharge your batteries.

Great relaxing hideaway!
Second visit this year to this lovely little cottage almost in the middle of nowhere, with everything we needed, including a great view and a pub within half an hour’s walk. Our second visit was every bit as good as the first and we’ll be returning for a third when we can make the time.
Thank you for your lovely review, hope its not too long before you can return.
Bad points : Wardrobe space restricted by vacuum cleaner etc.
Dining chairs need attention, very wobbly.
Drawers below TV need clearing out of accumulated stuff, Video tapes etc
Mattress topper slid over mattress during night.
Timers of heating and towel rail not working as stated times.
Neighbours with dogs walking past french window regularly.
Good points: Lovely shower room.
Great place to stay
We enjoyed our stay at Mount Cottage, the property is very well equipped comfortable. If you just want peace and quiet then you have it but there are plenty of walks and other entertainment nearby should that be your wish.
Very well presented and fully equipped cottage.
Had a very relaxing and peaceful stay. Loved the views and enjoyed all the animals.
Peaceful location in beautiful countryside
We stayed at this cottage to recover from a very stressful situation and we couldn't have been luckier than to have chosen this place. The cottage is well kept, clean and has a fully equipped kitchen. The bathroom has just been renovated and looks nice, modern and clean. The owner is very accommodating, friendly and responds very quickly. The location is just lovely and from the back patio you can see the rolling hills and watch the sunset everyday while listening to birds, ducks, geese and all other farm animals. This cottage is just 6 min drive from the main village where you can get your basics and just 3 min drive to a nice pub. We hope to one day come back to this place and would recommend it to family and friends for sure.
Lovely cottage in idyllic rural setting
We had a wonderful time staying at Mount Cottage, it's cozy, with a great view over the fields. The new bathroom was definitely a plus. There were neighbours in adjoining and nearby cottages within the complex, but we were barely aware of them.
The coastal town of Morecambe is approximately 15 miles away, Arnside and Silverdale are also within easy driving distance.
A car is essential to access the cottage as there is limited public transport in the area.
Wray (Scarecrow Festival in May) 2 miles, High Bentham (Bentham Show in July) 3 miles, Ingleton (Ingleton Falls) 6 miles, Kirkby Lonsdale (Ruskins View) 8 miles, Feizor (Falconry Centre) 11 miles, Settle (Settle to Carlisle railway) 12 miles, Lancaster 14 miles.
There is a Spar, a Co-op and a good selection of local shops including butchers, bakers and a hardware shop, banks and 3 pubs in High Bentham (3 miles). Nearest pub is The Punch Bowl in Low Bentham (1.3 miles) then the George and Dragon in Wray (2.3 miles). There is a fairly large Booths supermarket in both Kirkby Lonsdale (8 miles) and Settle (12 miles) or Lancaster (14 miles) provides a wide selection of supermarkets and shops. The area is ideal for birdwatching, walking, cycling, horse-riding, fishing, caving, climbing, ballooning or just relaxing and taking in the scenery of the beautiful, peaceful surroundings.
