About Richard Scourse
My wife and I live in Somerset. We met in Cornwall and have always spent time in Cornwall each year. We love the coastline and granite landscapes inland. The climate, the scenery and culture make the county a very distinctive place for holidays. We are both retired schoolteachers and appreciate just how rewarding seaside holidays can be for families, giving them time to relax together in a special place. We spend time with our own extended family at Rockford each year and the beach, Bude and the surrounding area are very special for all of us. We hope that visitors will enjoy the area and the house as much as we do!
Richard Scourse purchased this Bungalow in 2006
Why Richard Scourse chose Widemouth Bay
My wife and I spent our childhood and teenage holidays in Cornwall and grew to love the north coast and its beaches and cliff scenery. The Bude area is very accessible from our home in Somerset and also very unspoiled with quiet rolling countryside as well as the superb coastline. When the opportunity arose to buy a bungalow in a quiet road 5 minutes from Widemouth beach we had no hesitation! Since then we have significantly modernised the bungalow increasing the number of bedrooms from 2 to 4 and building a vaulted kitchen-diner. The property is conveniently located only 2 miles south of Bude with its many shops and supermarket plus its own distinctive small town character, still largely unspoiled by the influx of summer tourists.
What makes this Bungalow unique
The bungalow is a wonderful place for a holiday with our extended family. Apart from surfing, rock-pooling and beach games the area offers walking, adventure sports, visits to National Trust and English Heritage sites and there are many attractive restaurants and cafes for eating out. The property is a superb place for a family to relax and escape from the frenetic pace of normal working life and offers good facilities in good or poor weather. The rear garden is a favourite place especially on windy days. Rockford is very convenient for children with its external patio shower for the removal of Widemouth sand and the safe, secure garden. Elderly folk find it suitable as it is all on one floor providing easy access. It possesses all the usual domestic services and plenty of parking space.

Rockford was even better than the photos
We had a wonderful week in this spacious, well equipped bungalow. Great kitchen, good sized bedrooms. Beautiful view.
Nice bungalow in fantastic location
Nice bungalow - small bedrooms could do with some cupboard space. Everything else you need is there and the beautiful beach is a 5 minute walk away. We had a lovely holiday there.
A lovely home with a secure garden. The grandchildren loved it here and it felt so comfortable. Everything you could need was here - will definitely come again
The security of the garden is an asset appreciated by many including our own daughters and their families - especially sheltered on windy days and a safe place for well behaved dogs.
A lovely, well equipped, clean and comfortable bungalow with great views over the surrounding countryside and only a short walk to both dog friendly and dog free beaches. The Bay View Hotel does lovely food and is within walking distance if you want a drink. Elements Itallian Restaurant is a great place to eat and the food is delicious.
We try to provide a wide range of kitchen equipment to meet all needs. Our own family enjoy meals in the kitchen-diner with a great view over open countryside.
There are relatively few dog friendly beaches in the summer period and Widemouth south is very popular for this reason. It is also a clean and well managed beach.
Home from home
Very enjoyable had all amenities and such a wonderful location ie private garden, near the beach, warm outdoor shower after surfing, lovely beach cafe and local shop with Post Office and selling fresh fish and in evenings Fish n' Chips and finally Bude only a couple of miles away and with coastal and rural walks available Have been staying at Rockford for over 30 years! And never tiring of this holiday bungalow.
Delighted to see that yet another group renting Rockford have had a good holiday and found the bungalow homely and comfortable. The private garden is an asset when the days are windy and the nearby shops and cafes have improved the quality of service significantly in recent years. We continually strive to keep the property in good condition and try to respond quickly to any suggestions for improvement made by visiting renters.
Ideal property close to beach
Thank you for the wonderful time we had at Rockford. The house was really lovely, so well equipped and spacious. We loved the large kitchen/dining-room and the beds were extremely comfortable. The outdoor shower was much appreciated as we were in the sea every day. We really enjoyed our week at Widemouth Bay and didn't want to leave! Many thanks and I hope we will be able to come to Rockford again.
Delighted that Rockford was so suitable. Many parties of up to 10 people enjoy the proximity to the beach and the facilities available at Rockford
Widemouth Bay beach is a 5 minute walk from the property. The beach is 2 kms wide and sandy with low cliffs and rocky areas to the north and south. Surfing is very popular at this beach with some competitions from time to time. The beach is controlled by a team of RNLI life guards throughout the summer and also for the Easter period and for the weekends up to and including the half term week in the autumn. There is a large car park at the beach with a cliff-top café.
Use of a car is recommended. There is a bus service in the summer giving access to Bude and Boscastle but this is not very frequent. The nearest airport is at Bristol (120 miles) with a smaller airport at Exeter (46 miles). Continental ferries dock at Plymouth (36 miles) with sailings from France and Spain. A car is valuable for visiting other attractions in Cornwall such as Tintagel, Padstow and the Eden Project.
Bude is 2.5 miles to the north. (For shops, cafés, restaurants, golf etc)
Boscastle is 12 miles to the south. (Picturesque coastal village and harbour)
Tintagel is 14 miles to the south. (Famous King Arthur's castle on island)
Clovelly is 17 miles to the north. (Old coastal village and harbour)
The Eden Project is 35 miles to the south. (For aspects of global conservation)
Plymouth is 36 miles to the south-east. (Naval history)
Newquay is 43 miles to the south. (Famous resort)
The old canal inland from Bude has been restored and turned into a very attractive area with cafés along the quayside, a nature reserve and a lovely walk along the old tow path inland for about 2 miles where there is a modern restaurant (The Weir) built in the last 2 years with a fishing lake and wildlife interactive display.
At Widemouth Bay the Bay View Inn is very popular as a local pub offering an attractive range of meals.
A new restaurant "Elements" lies on the Cliff top between Widemouth Bay and Bude and provides a very attractive menu (especially Italian) for eating out as does the Widemouth Manor only about a mile away.
Bude provides adventure training facilities (very popular with younger age groups) in surfing, canoeing, kayaking and coasteering and courses are run throughout the March to October period. In addition Bude has a Leisure Centre and indoor swimming pool.
As well as the coastal footpath there are many other pleasant walks available including a link across local fields to the canal and Weir café. To the south, 16 miles away, is the head of the Camel estuary cycleway which terminates in Padstow and passes through Wadebridge where cycle hire can be arranged.
Bude has banks, chemists and many tourist shops and cafes. Morrisons have a large supermarket there and Sainsbury also have a supermarket. Doctors and dentists are available and there is a minor injuries hospital at nearby Stratton just across the A39.
