Beautifully restored Stone Cottage in gently rolling Quercy hills

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,076 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

2 bedroom cottage in peaceful rural location.

Carefully restored, this stone built cottage with original beams has two double bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs and a spacious open plan lounge/dining room/kitchen downstairs. Situated in a peaceful, rural situation, the property is in the large grounds of the owners' house but has its own south facing terrace and garden overlooking the lovely countryside. Ideal for nature lovers, there are plenty of walks straight from the door and many more in the local area. For cyclists, there are miles of quiet roads. Only 10 kilometres away is Caussade, a typical French market town with all amenities; shops, weekly market, cinema, restaurants and bars. Nearby are the famous 'bastide' fortified towns, with medieval houses, castles, and quaint cobbled streets. Local vineyards are a short drive away. For the more active there's a swimming lake with sandy beach and canoes and pedalos nearby as well as two swimming pools - covered and open air. The local river hires canoes/kayaks. The larger towns of Cahors and Montauban have museums and art galleries, old churches and a wider selection of shops.

About Heather Scales

My name is Heather and my husband is Geoff. I was a teacher in the UK when we met and Geoff was a computer manager living and working near Paris. He's lived in France for more than 40 years! We retired early and moved here in 2002. We love living in the French countryside and enjoy the relaxed way of life here.

We are both very active. I love walking and gardening and we have a fruit and vegetable garden that provides us with most of our needs for the year! We like going to the local cinema where they often show English films and always enjoy the many live music events nearby. After a busy summer we love chilling out on a quiet Greek island and in the winter try to visit a European City to get some culture!

Geoff has proved to be great at DIY and is always busy building walls, creating paths, fixing the roof, or making cold frames and raised beds! He is the secretary of the Norton Owners Club in France and has three old motorbikes which he takes to rallies several times a year.

Heather Scales purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Heather Scales chose Auty

We fell in love with the location of our property as soon as we saw it. It is surrounded by gentle rolling hills, fields and woodlands. It is an old farmhouse and is over 200 years old. There are a number of barns and outbuildings and many old fruit trees.

Nightingale Cottage is a stone built house in our grounds and was once used by the farm hand who looked after the cows! We started work renovating it in 2011 and have kept many original features whilst creating a modern living space with up to the minute kitchen and bathroom.

It is very quiet and peaceful here and our nearest neighbour (a fruit farmer) is about 200 metres away. At the same time we are only 10 minutes away from Caussade; a thriving market town where you can get everything you need, and also the A20 motorway for easy access to the airport in Toulouse or travelling north or south.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is in a really peaceful location - ideal for chilling out - but is only a 10 minute drive from the busy market town of Caussade which has all amenities. There's a fantastic weekly market, full of local produce, plenty of cafes and bars and great restaurants to suit all tastes. Added to this are banks, supermarkets, bakers, butchers and wonderful cheese and delicatessen shops.

Only half an hour away are the larger towns of Cahors and Montauban with art galleries, old churches and museums as well as a good range of shops. There are many medieval hilltop villages nearby, full of history, and many of the local villages host live music events throughout the season. The regular village fetes are a great way to sample the local food specialities such as duck products, cheeses and cured meats. You can try the local wines and taste the wonderful peaches, apricots and melons grown in this area. The vineyards nearby have regular open days, and there are farm visits where you can see the animals and watch the cheese production.

Add to that the weather - it's dry and hot in the summer and mild in the spring and autumn - and you've got all you need!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Thank you Heather and Geoff for a truly wonderful stay at your gite. Your warm and friendly welcome including a really thoughtful box of local produce was unexpected and was just the beginning of a very memorable time in Nightingale Cottage. The cottage is a perfect retreat from a hectic pace of life in big cities...soothing to the soul...light and airy, beautifully furnished and equipped and with fantastic touches of its original provenance as a former barn; yet it was warm and very comfortable. We loved dining on our patio, and we really appreciated your assistance when needed. We will most certainly be recommending Nightingale Cottage to all our friends and relatives." Julie and Tony, Sydney Australia

"Very many thanks Heather & Geoff for a wonderful two weeks in this endlesly fascinating part of France. We appreciated your kind hospitality and marvellously well-equipped gite." Kevin & Victoria Cummins, UK

Beautiful Cottage in Tranquil Setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a very enjoyable one week stay during which we explored a considerable amount of the surrounding countryside. The area contains numerous historic and pretty villages and towns and is, of course, close to Toulouse. We were never at a loss for somewhere to go. However, we were always pleased to return to Nightingale Cottage which is set in glorious rolling countryside. The tranquillity and peace is wonderful. The cottage itself is well-appointed and comfortable and had everything we required. Heather and Geoff, the owners, had gone the extra mile to provide necessary basic items, as well as a “Welcome Basket” containing local goodies which was very much appreciated. They are a mine of information, approachable but discreet, and made our holiday a memorable one.

Peace and tranquility!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week at Nightingale Cottage which is superbly equipped and spotlessly clean. Set amongst beautiful rolling countryside with gorgeous views. The accomodation is spacious, especially downstairs with french doors which open onto a lovely private terrace where we had a BBQ on a couple of evenings. The cottage is close to wonderful medieval villages such as Cordes sur Ciel and St Antonin which are breathtaking and well worth a visit. Heather and Geoff were lovely hosts too! Our bond was returned within a week of our return home!! It is one of the nicest cottages we have stayed in.

Great gite!

  • 5 of 5

A delightful gite in a wonderful part of “La France Profonde”. We had a relaxing, peaceful holiday enjoying the sunshine and views. The gite faces south, gets the full mid-day sun but also has plenty of trees for shade. The gite is very well equipped and has everything needed.

Heather was the perfect hostess, always there when needed but never obtrusive.

We would recommend as essentials a visit to the Monday market in Caussade (one of the best we have come across in France) and visits to Moissac and St Antonin-Noble-Val. The restaurant “O’Mignardises” in the centre of Caussade does an excellent, value for money lunch – the locals eat there!

A beautiful house, in a beautiful setting. We, (2 Adults and 2 teenagers) had a week with Heather and Geoff this summer. The house is extremely well equipped and so quiet.

There are many beautiful Cities within a short drive. A highlight for us was canoeing in Penne.

Thank you once again.

Heather and Geoff are very friendly and extremely hospitable hosts with an excellent knowledge of the region and plenty of helpful hints and tips on where to go and what to see. We greatly enjoyed our week there and would recommend this property without hesitation.
