About Marcella Sutcliffe
This is our country house and has been our home while our children were little. We love the house and have very fond family memories there.
Marcella Sutcliffe purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1964
Why Marcella Sutcliffe chose Great Broughton
My husband was born here and for three generations Chapelgarth Estate has been a place to enjoy family gatherings, celebrate landmarks, wine and dine with friends and get married. There is a separate 'Artist's Studio' - the Dixon Studio that can be hired for special events - including bouffets and sit-down meals (up to 70 people). The house lends itself beautifully for weddings- the garden or fields comfortably accommodate a teepee or markee and there is ample parking. The house is licensed for holding civil weddings from 2017.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
Chapelgarth Estate offers a stunning house located on the edge of the North York Moors. The The pretty market town of Stokesley is just 4 miles away. There are plenty of interesting places to visit, all within a 30 to 40 minute drive. This includes the lovely seaside towns of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Saltburn by the Sea. Whitby and Sandsend are also worth visiting. The North York Moors is ideal for walking and cycling and there are plenty of popular destinations to visit, including the market town of Helmsley which is 20 miles away and Pickering which is famous for its steam railway. Yarm is slightly larger town than Stokesley and good choice for any shopaholics in the group.

Wonderful weekend away
Beautiful house and surroundings. Used the catering service which was fantastic. Make sure to try every door as we found another 2 rooms on our last day!
Overall a lovely stay for a girls weekend away.
I would recommend you ensure you bring oil, washing up liquid etc as was nearly caught out and had to nip to the shop (Co-op is only 10min drive away)
A country house Christmas of our dreams!
Coming over from Australia, we wanted a wonderful space to get 13 family members together for Christmas. Chapelgarth Estate was that place and we are so happy we stayed there. The house, whilst very big, was so warm and welcoming - we felt at home immediately. We especially enjoyed the magnificent family kitchen with the Aga, and we even ended up having Christmas lunch in the kitchen rather than the dining room.
We enjoyed the open fires and the very generous supply of wood and coal, and the Christmas tree set up for us was a delightful touch.
Johnny and Marcella were very welcoming and keen to make our stay enjoyable too.
A delightful house in a beautiful location, we would recommend this house wholeheartedly.
Fantastic house which is really well equipped. Everything you could possibly need is there.
This is a perfect house for a large (family) get together. We had 15 people spanning 4 generations, and everyone loved it. The large kitchen seated us all comfortably and with direct access to the garden was perfect for the children. The children also loved playing hide and seek and cartwheeling up the corridors.
We used caterers (recommended by Marcella) on the Saturday evening and what a good decision that was. The food was beautiful and the service excellent.
All in all, a fantastic weekend. The owners are in an adjoining annex so are there if you need anything but are happy to leave you to it.
Everything spotlessly clean, comfortable beds, lovely views and gardens. What’s not to love?
Would definitely go back again.
Perfect base for family of 14
The house and garden were perfect for our family holiday with ages ranging from 8 to 80. Lots to do and see for all ages and the house was very well equipped. We felt very comfortable there and were blessed with good weather - rain only at night.
Wonderful! Beautiful setting and ideal venue for a large get together! Great facilities. Highly recommend.
This is a great place to stay for family gatherings and celebrations.
We enjoyed a fantastic week at Chapelgarth. The facilities are excellent, and there is loads of room in the house and gardens. There is plenty for adults and children to do, especially the trampoline in the garden. We had a barbecue, which came with the house, although it was quite early in the year.
We felt relaxed in the house, and although the owners were living in the adjoining annexe, we did not feel that we were being observed.
We arranged for a celebration meal with a local caterer, which was excellent.
The llamas were a great attraction!
The property is in a great location, good for relaxing or visiting the North York Moors, the coast and other places of interest.
