About William Keene

We have provided additional information that we think will be useful to your stay on https://www.facebook.com/florenceapartment and www.florenceapartments.co.uk

The apartment is in a 17th Century building and is owned by William’s family whose ancestors owned the English Pharmacy (Farmacia Inglese) on one of the main streets of Florence, via de’ Tornabuoni.

William’s grandparents left before the war and moved to England where they then set up many similar pharmacies in the City of London.

You can still see the Farmacia on via de’ Tornabuoni which has now been turned into a shoe shop, but all the original wooden display cabinets for the medicines and tinctures are still there.

We hope you will enjoy discovering this beautiful historic City and visit again.

Why William Keene chose Florence Historic Centre

This property is in the historical City centre close to the train and bus stations and has good local shops but also a short walk to the main tourist attractions. The river Arno is also very close by that provides wonderful views. The Westin Excelsior and St Regis hotels are nearby arguably the two best hotels in Florence. The Police station is in the same street that adds to the sense of security. The apartment with its period features provides a link with the past.

What makes this apartment unique

Central location allows you to walk to all the tourist sites. Speciality shops in the same street provides great food and fabulous restaurants. Car hire available in the same street with Hertz, Avis etc. Free unlimited WiFi. On first floor so only one flight of steps. Air conditioning & washing machine.

Our Florence apartment was a perfect home away from home. Clean and well stocked kitchen. The bathroom has a terrific shower!! The dining and sleeping areas gave us our own personal space when needed. I felt safe since the neighborhood is surrounded by quality shops & hotels (2 Best Westerns right around the corner) which gave us a true sense of security. The little family owned market just across the street provided fresh fruits, vegetables, beverages, cheeses, & meats for home cooked meals when we did't want to eat out. What I liked most was we were close to all of the galleries & sites we wanted to see, and some we hadn't planned on seeing. Florence is an easy city to get around in. You can visit all of the famous museums & cathedrals on foot since our apartment was in close proximity everthing. Our host gave us excellent directions to get to the apt from the terminal and we were in there and comfotable just minutes after our train arrived in the station. I really loved visiting Florence and staying at 74 Borgo Ognisannti. It was my favorite apartment & city of our 24 day tour to Paris, Rome & Florence.

Sincerely

Lovely Florence

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this apartment for 3 nights. It's in a perfect area, far enough away from the throngs of tourists. We fell in love with Il Profeta, the wonderful restaurant across the street. We'd read the reviews about noise possibly being an issue so we brought our sound machine from home! Really if you shut the windows, noise wasn't a problem for us at all. In fact, our first night there we slept so well that when we woke up it was past lunch time and we'd slept 14 hours! The bed is very cozy, obviously.

It was so nice opening the window and shutters in the dining area and gazing down at all the activity on the street.

There were only a couple issues. In the bathroom, when sitting on the commode, you have to shift your legs to the side as the shower is right there. Unfortunately the towels smelled a bit sour, likely due to the fact there is no dryer. Really the good outweighed those couple inconveniences.

Last but not least, Elisa is a gem! She talked us through finding the apartment as we were turned around. She had a big smile and was so helpful. We had to leave early due to a family emergency and Elisa was so sweet!

We will be back!

Owner's Response: Dear Carolyn & Gene, it is wonderful to hear that you slept so well, found the bed very cozy and fell in love with il Profeta across the street. There is a folding clothes airer / dryer behind the kitchen door that we use and the shower doors fold inwards as well as opening outwards. It is great to hear that you found the location perfect and we look forward to seeing you again. Kind regards William

Charming apartment in a very good location.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here as part of a three week trip across Europe. This apartment was the very first one that we stayed in during this trip and as such it was also the least expensive. It has everything that you need and the location is really perfect in my opinion. You are within blocks of the Santa Maria station without being TOO close. There was a bit of traffic at certain times and I was concerned about noise but I did not find noise to be a problem at all. the bedroom is in the back and shielded from the neighborhood hustle. It was great fun to see the neighborhood begin it's day. GREAT restaurants nearby. One was very inexpensive but VERY good. I wish I could remember the name but it was on the same side of the street as this place and they did have a trip advisor sign in the window. The apartment itself is a little darker in the photos but it is comfy and clean. The cooking area is very small(not unusual for a city home)but you should consider that if you are thinking of cooking anything complicated. We did cook and it was just fine. The bed was nice and comfortable and my husband often has trouble with strange beds and he thought this one was fine. This placed is a great find and PERFECT for walking throughout Florence. You really cannot beat the price for what you get. We would stay here again.

Wonderful charming appartment in super location.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights in this wonderful charming apartment. We arrived by car from Urbino and there was ample parking space when we arrived as well as a large garage just a stone throw away. After being welcomed in the most hospitable way by Elisa's replacement Chiara we settled down in the cool, pleasant and air-conditioned surroundings of this cosy hideaway in a further blistering hot Florence. There is just something about this apartment which makes it special, that litte 'It' factor. Whether it is the rustic wooden ceiling bars, the lovely characteristic decoration or just the dimensions I don't know but we loved it. Its comfortable and all you can think of is there.

Two further things that stood out for us were; 1) the brilliant location; it is really perfectly placed as you are just outside the real (noisy) tourist zone but literally everything is (short) walking distance. Whether it is San Lorenzo, Uffizi, or the restaurants south of the Arno it is all withing striking distance. No need for a taxi. 2) The helpfulness of the owner and, in our case, Chiara (local Firenze). We called the owner as we needed some particular information and he was most kind and helpful despite being on holiday himself and gave us great and useful information. Besides having been sent arrival information, the flat itself has a number of maps, cards and recommendations on real good restaurants. (4Leoni and Le Fonticini were our favourites, the former for pasta, the latter for the best Tagliata de Manzo in years). Also Chiara helped us with getting a taxi to the airport (10/15 minutes) even though the information was in the flat (we found out later). So if you are looking for a characteristic beautiful perfectly located and comfortable flat with the safety net of great and kind support; look no further as you have found it. We will certainly come back when it is cooler in order to visit all the sites we could not visit as we ran out of time. PS;.. .... you must be used to the Mongol Steppes if you find this flat noisy. Have Fun

A Week In Florence

  • 4 of 5

We spent our week in Florence walking and viewing the city. Enjoying the restaurants and the friendly people of Florence. Our apartment was as nice as it looks in the photos and was in an ideal location. It was easy to reach within a five minute walk from the bus station and perfectly placed to reach all that the city had to offer. In the apartment we had everything we needed and the new bed was very comfortable. Cooking facilities were basic but we had no plans to do a lot of cooking. The apartment had a home from home feel to it and felt good to return home to after a long day visiting Siena or walking the countryside around Florence. The accommodation is in a one way street near a small junction which can get a little noising with passing traffic but soon got used to it and did not find it a problem, after all if you want peace and quiet don't stay in a city. Talking of noise , the only down side of this lovely old buildings exposed beamed ceiling was that you did sometimes here foot fall on occasion from the flat above but again this was not a big issue. Finally, the owners were very efficient and gave us lots of pre visit information about the accommodation, local shops and facilities, restaurants and emergency contact numbers which we felt was both helpful and reassuring. I would be very happy to stay in this apartment again if I get a chance to visit Florence in the future and would also recommend it to others.

Owner's Response: Dear Raymond and Wendy, it is great to hear that you enjoyed your stay in Florence especially the friendly people and restaurants. Also happy to hear that you found the apartment perfectly placed in an ideal location within walking distance of all the City had to offer. Delighted that you found the property a home from home and the new bed very comfortable. We acknowledge your point that if you want peace and quiet don't stay in a City and you found noise not a big issue, got used to it and did not find it a problem. We look forward to seeing you again and nice to know that you would recommend the apartment to your friends. Kind regards William.

Great Location; Not for Light Sleepers

  • 3 of 5

The property is centrally located near all the major tourist attractions and public transportation. We found most everything within walking distance. There are an abundance of restaurants and shops to choose from, with an excellent restaurant right across the street.

The apartment is in a very old building, with a narrow staircase. The WiFi worked very well, as did the washing machine (clothes need to be line dried or there is a laundry mat around the corner).

The apartment was very clean and stocked with dishes, pans, etc. Soaps were provided, but no shampoo. The towels were line-dried and a bit stiff.

Being able to look out onto a bustling street is charming during the day, but can be a nightmare at night, particularly on the weekends. We stayed in the apartment Friday-Monday and the first night, in spite of closing all shutters, windows, and doors, I was only able to get about three hours sleep due to the street noise (scooters, cars, buses, people shouting to each other down the street) and the neighbors in the building either coming up the stairs or pounding across the floor above your head. Sunday and Monday nights were quieter, and I had my earplugs, so I was able to get some sleep.

I did contact the owner; however, there's not much that he can do about the street noise. He was responsive and offered that I should try earplugs and/or sleeping medication. He is used to living amongst the noise of London, so he finds the apartment fairly quiet. We live in a suburb, with little or no street noise, so I found the noise overwhelming.

Personally, I would opt for a quieter location, but it depends on your ability to sleep through noise.

Owner's Response: Dear Judy & Allan, Florence is a beautiful elegant City that has plenty of things to see and do during the day or evening. As everything is within walking distance of the apartment you can see masterpieces of artwork at the Uffizi Gallery or Sculpture with the statue of David by Michelangelo at the Accademia followed by fantastic food and wine watching the lively street scene of people enjoying themselves with all the passion that is Italy and Florence. The building and Florence is old, magical, fun and fascinating. Whilst building specifications have moved on since the seventeenth century we have double glazing external and internal wooden shutters to reduce the noise of City life. Maybe as we already live in a City we do not hear it or more likely we are used to it and sleep soundly. We accept that a City has more noise than the countryside. Maybe that we are so exhausted at the end of the day that we don’t hear it. We do love Florence and everything that it offers. Kind regards William

Ideal Location in Beautiful Florence

  • 5 of 5

My husband, son and I stayed in this apartment for one week and it was perfect for exploring Florence. We purchased the 72 Hour/72 Museums Firenze Card and visited 26 museums in 3 days! Definitely recommend purchasing this card to avoid long lines at museums. We enjoyed the expresso coffee maker at 74 Borgo Ognisannti every morning with pastries from several nearby bakeries. So much so that we purchased an expresso coffee maker to bring home. Don't miss the terrific restaurant right across the street from the apartment. Walk over and make reservations for dinner. The food is fabulous and the owner is a treat. Every afternoon we threw open the shutters in the apartment and watched the locals go about their daily routine with a glass of Chianti from the local market. The apartment is very clean and everything worked well. Elisa was welcoming and made us feel comfortable from the start. We would definitely return to this apartment. Joyce
