About the property

Beautiful property in a peaceful location with stunning mountain views on the edge of a white village.

The property, La Hacienda, provides comfortable and spacious accommodation for up to 12 people. It is divided into three units around a large terrace and pool (10.5 x 4.5m). The main villa Picasso sleeps 6, the adjoining house Gaudi sleeps 4 and the cottage Dali sleeps 2. During July and August La Hacienda is let as a whole for families or a group who want to holiday together. At other times Picasso can be let on its own or together with Gaudi and/or Dali. There is a large grassed area for ball games. La Hacienda is ideal for friends and families of all ages who want to holiday together but still have their own space. The property is detached and is not overlooked. It is in the natural park of Grazalema and has stunning views down the valley and up to the mountains. La Hacienda is on level ground and there is only a very gentle slope on the first part of road to the village. Most of it is flat so fine for pushchairs. The pool is accessed through gates at either end so that the area is safe for young children. The dining/sitting room in Picasso is suitable for a large group. The normal changeover day is Saturday but can be flexible during the low season. Please contact the manager. Cotton bed linen, towels and pool towels are provided. La Hacienda is on the edge of a typical Spanish white village (pueblo blanco). Montejaque has supermarkets, shops, banks, bars and restaurants. The nearest bar is less than 5 minutes walk from La Hacienda. The village has a central square where cultural activities take place at different times of the year. Please have a look at the video and you can see the surrounding area and some examples of regional food and cultural events. Montejaque is also the starting place for several sporting events eg. charity walks and bike rides. The historic town of Ronda with its famous bull ring is 15 minutes drive away. The beautiful villages of Zahara, with its picturesque lake, and Grazalema are less than half an hour by car from Montejaque. The beaches of the Costa del Sol are about an hour away. It is an ideal base for the many activities available in the area, walking, bird watching, painting, canoeing, riding etc.

About Mike Hughes

I have been going to Montejaque for 25 years. I love the place. The villagers are really friendly and welcoming to visitors. Most summer holidays have been spent here with my family. There is lots to do and space for the children to run around safely.

Why Mike Hughes chose Montejaque

The property is just on the outskirts of the village and a short walk to the nearest tapas bar and shops. The views from the house are stunning and it's in a peaceful location. All the rooms open out on to the terrace. The house is very well insulated so that when its hot outside at the height of summer it's lovely and cool inside. The swimming pool is 10.5 x 4.5 m so there's plenty of space for everyone. It's safe for children as the pool has stylish metal railings around it with two entrance gates at both ends. As the property is divided into three units it's ideal for families or groups of friends who may want to have their own space at times. All in all a great place for extended family and friends to relax and chill out.

Great house

Booked the house for a group of 6 adults and 4 kids. Mike was very communicative throughout the process and was always available to answer any questions for us. The house is brilliant and well equipped. Plenty of room for all of us and being spread over three seperate units offers privacy as well if you need it. The village is a short walk away with a couple of tapas bars, however plan ahead as the opening hours can vary. La Casita was a reliable alternative which is usually open and provides good options though not local. Do try the freshly fried fish and grilled chicken available in the local shop in the village, they usually sell out very quickly. Ronda is a half hour drive away with plenty of options.

We did have some niggles in the first two days as the property managers did not seem to be prepared for us. There was no hot water or firewood available and having arrived on the weekend we had to wait till Monday. Mike was easily reachable and made sure everything was sorted out as soon as possible.

This is a great place to get away from the crowds and has plenty of options for trekking in the area

Perfect location, fabulous house

We were a group of 12 (3 family units) and the house was ideal for having good shared space and our own family space when needed. The pool was lovely and a great way to cool down from the hot summer sun - it was enjoyed by all. We did get out and about to Ronda, Gibralter and the beaches on the coast - but ended up relaxing and chilling on the terraces lots too. The views from the house are quite breathtaking and local walks in the hills were braved by some in our party. We used the local supermarkets and cooked in the very well stocked kitchen. It was lovely to have the space to eat as a family all together. Food and wine were both very reasonably priced and we had an enjoyable evening in one of the local restaurants. The house is well maintained and locally the management is very good. I would thoroughly recommend this house - thank you, we had a great week and made some amazing memories.

A dream which came true

It was an absolute delight to rent La Hacienda. We were an extended family of 15 people ranging from 3 years to 75 years and all thoroughly enjoyed our time in the fabulous surroundings, comfortable houses and the excellent leisure facilities - swimming pool, table tennis table, badminton racquets etc. The BBQ was easy to use and clean and provided a very cheery atmosphere in the evenings.

Our holiday was a celebration of the fifty years of marriage of my husband and I. It was my wish and anniversary gift to have our family as a whole in the one place at the one time. The villa complex allowed that to happen, thanks to the generosity of the owners who allowed the extra beds and facilitated the dream.

We did have a problem with the lock on the door of Gaudi but we were exceedingly well served by the on call backup staff who were swiftly on the ball and with their excellent men had the door operational once more. Isabel was the soul of efficiency not only in matters relating to the complex but also in sorting transport to and from El Molino restaurant (which was just superb!) and for that we thank her too. The gardening and pool gentlemen were also most considerate and kindly as they carried out their tasks. The houses are spacious and exceedingly well equipped with everything you might need if self catering. The beds are most comfortable and there are plenty of chairs and loungers etc.

The friendliness of the folk in the village was an added bonus and much appreciated. As was the fact that it really was within easy walking distance.

La Hacienda is much more than the description on the net and I was tempted not to pass on the good impressions we have experienced in case others want to book when we too might want to stay!!

Marvellous Montejaque

We chose ‘La Hacienda’ for it’s facilities, suitability, (room-wise for our 4 teenage kids - each had their own) and location and we weren’t disappointed with any of the above. We chose to drive here from Seville in the south, about 1.5hrs away through uncluttered mountain roads. Expect Seville and the coast to the south to be quite a lot hotter than the immediate locality but it’s well worth a visit. Against a beautiful backdrop of Andalucian mountains and hillsides dotted with whitewashed buildings, it’s was perfect for our 2 week stay. La Hacienda is close to the town of Ronda, which is about a 15 minute drive away (famous for its bridge and bullring, amongst other things) which we also popped to for our larger supermarket shops. Having said that Montejaque does have a couple of mini supermarkets, a great bakery and a good number of bars and restaurants in or nearby the square. Food we found of a very high quality and the tapas bar & supermarket bill much lower than we expected. A word of advice, (obviously) don’t expect the locals to speak English - we got by on phrasebook Spanish perfectly well and were patiently listened to by local shopkeepers and bar owners! Facility-wise we were very happy, barbecuing at home frequently and the rooms were of a very good standard. We had a separate fridge for drinks plus another food fridge and freezer. The pool, which was high on our list of ‘must-haves’ was a nice size (regularly cleaned) and is a must when you need to cool off from the strong August Spanish sun. Speaking of which there is also a fabulous cave only 5 minutes’ drive away (‘La Cueva del Gato’) with a small natural lake and waterfall with very refreshing but very cold water! We would not hesitate to recommend the villa to a friend or relative. There are good local walks to go on, many are found on signs in the area, part of the ‘Grazelema National Park’ system, a favourite of ours was the Hundidero Cave and dam, about 8 minute’s drive along the mountain road and the walk consists of a steep stepped descent. (We tended to go out early to avoid the heat of the day). All in all, a great, characterful place with lots available within a stone’s throw.

Surpassed our expectations

Having left it late to look for something for 2 families, luckily for us La Hacienda had a cancellation. We usually go for coastal villas in Portugal or Spain so this was different being inland and rural. With some trepidation, but despairing of finding anything else, we went ahead. We needn't have worried - it exceeded all our expectations and we would definitely return and recommend it to others. The photos do not do it justice. All the rooms are large and airy, the pool is a great size and the views are spectacular looking down the valley at the neighbouring villages. The kitchens are extremely well equipped with plenty of glassware, cutlery and crockery. There is a nice walk right on the doorstep up a zig zag path to a small chapel and on to look out over the next valley and right across to Ronda. It was too hot to do much walking but at the right time of year it would be perfect. It is an easy uphill walk into the village for basic shopping and a few restaurants - downhill on the way home. Ronda is a 15 minute scenic drive for a large supermarket and all other shopping, and you would be spoiled for choice for places to eat there. The views of the gorge and the surrounding countryside are superb. There is apparently a good Sunday market in Ronda although we didn't manage a visit (the so-called market in Montejaque is 3 stalls!!). The neighbouring village has a lovely restaurant, La Molina, where we ate a couple of times - more upmarket and expensive than the ones in Montejaque. But we had cheap and filling tapas, pizzas and steaks in Montejaque. Janice recommended Frank's in Arriete near Ronda where we went for lunch to celebrate AS results for two of our party - gorgeous food. We drove to Zahara and Grazelema - well worth a visit and the mountain road between the two has amazing views (but not great for anyone suffering from vertigo). We also enjoyed a visit to the nearby caves complete with prehistoric paintings. Other than that we spent 2 (very hot) weeks lazing by the pool, enjoying the ping pong table and large selection of books. Isabel, the manager, was very helpful with problems of a missing shower curtain, a broken ceiling fan and sun umbrellas, and lack of wifi - all of which were sorted out - and she also provided us with a taxi service! Only reason not to give 5 stars is the lack of a really good selection of places to eat within walking distance but no problem if you are happy to drive and forego the Rioja!

Malaga, Seville and Jerez airports are all around 75 minutes drive away. Gibraltar is about 90 minutes drive away.

Montejaque has several small supermarkets, banks, a bakery, chemist and hairdressers as well as three restaurants and several tapas bars. Benaojan, five minutes from Montejaque, has a medical centre which is open 24/7. There is also a very good restaurant in Estacion Benaojan and also in Sahara, which is 25 minutes drive from Montejaque. The historic town of Ronda is 15 minutes drive away. The tourist centre near the bull ring has information on local events and activities.

Prices shown are for La Hacienda sleeping up to 12. La Hacienda is available from Easter until the end of October. Bookings are for a minimum of 7 nights. Changeover day is Saturday. From March to June and September/October the main villa Picasso (sleeps 6) with exclusive use of La Hacienda can be booked on its own at £550 per week. (2017 £600) Picasso with Gaudi (sleeps 10) £940 per week (2017 £1000). Picasso with Dali (sleeps 8) £800 per week (2017 £800). In July and August La Hacienda (sleeps 12) is available only for larger groups. 2016 £1295 per week (2017 £1400).
