We are a family of 5, with a dog called Santi, living on a small holding with ducks, geese and chickens.
Penny purchased this Cottage in 2004
Why Penny chose Hartland
We came to live in North Devon via Surrey and Malaysia. We love the peace and quiet of West Staddon, the proximity to an incredibly beautiful coastline, the sea views from our house and garden, and being part of Hartland's interesting and diverse community.
What makes this Cottage unique
A peaceful getaway, down a private lane. The cottage is spacious and offers lots of different spaces to relax in whether the weather is warm or cold.

We enjoyed a lovely week exploring Devon and Cornwall from this perfect cottage.
Very peaceful location
We enjoyed a wonderful week at The Shippen. Very private and quiet. Would be perfect for people with dogs. Penny was very friendly and helpful. We appreciated the lovely cake and the eggs on arrival. Close to fabulous coastal walks and good golf courses. Also close enough to Dartmoor to enjoy a walk there and a game of golf.
Thanks Penny for a lovely stay.
Clean, comfortable, a good place to stay when visiting the Harland area
The location of this cottage is very remote though close to the village of Hartland which is a short drive away. Lemon drizzle cake and new laid eggs awaited our arrival in the cosy kitchen which had a lovely aga style range cooker. Very spacious with well fitted bathrooms it was easy to feel at home here. Penny was very helpful and always on hand if needed. A few constructive suggestions a large comfy sofa in the sitting room would be welcome especially if there are 4 or 5 people staying. Also the single beds in the downstairs bedroom would benefit from better quality mattresses although what is there is adequate. We also thought that it would be so easy to make an area of the garden round the conservatory enclosed so in hot weather you could let the dog go in and out to a small area of garden without intruding on the owners outside areas. This is not essential but would be helpful if we had been staying longer. There is a lovely supply of books, games etc and a nice cosy log burner. All round a well maintained spacious cottage a great place to stay which is surrounded by stunning scenery and lots of walks and teashops. We especially recommend Docton Mill their cream tea is wonderful! There is a lovely circular walk from Hartland Quay along the coastal path then inland through a beautiful valley to Docton Mill then a path wends its way back inland to Stoke and then to Hartland Quay.
Lovely, spacious and well equipped cottage. My children both enjoyed visiting the chickens and watching the local wildlife.
Perfect for our needs with a young dog.
The cottage had everything you could need on a self catering holiday. Penny was on hand to offer help and advise and made us feel very welcome. A really relaxing environment with a wooded area ideal for exercising the dog. Only a relatively short drive to the beautiful Devon coast with some great walks on the doorstep, one of our most relaxing holidays. Thanks to Penny and Din.
Thank you. Hope to see you here again!
Wonderful house and location
Stayed 2 nights with my husband and 2 kids (14 and 12) and we all loved it. It’s bigger than you might think, with space to eat in kitchen as well as a dining/living room plus conservatory. Two bathrooms a bonus. Really pleasant little hideaway with walks on stunning coast nearby. Spring flowers in woods and garden made me smile after this long winter.
Thank you! I am glad you all enjoyed your break and hope to see you again,
