About George Lane
My name is George and I work as a PE and Maths teacher, and coach a number of sports to youngsters. I've been married to Joss for a little over 4 years now and in that time we've had two boys - Freddie (2)and William (1 month).
George Lane purchased this Cottage in 2008
Why George Lane chose Bideford
I've always loved North Devon, and used to visit the area with my parents and two brothers every year when we were growing up. Joss and I continued coming on holiday here when we got married, and 4 years ago, when we were looking to get on the property ladder, we decided to buy this property. Working and living in an independent boarding school can be pretty demanding for us all during term time, and Appledore represents the perfect place for us to escape to and relax. It is easily accessible (2.5hrs) from where we live, and we also love the thought of other people being able to enjoys this terrific part of the country when we are unable to be down there.
What makes this Cottage unique
Appledore and it's surrounding area has everything that you could wish for a holiday, whether it be for a quiet get-away or an action packed family beach holiday (or even a bit of both!). As soon as we get down to the area we automatically feel relaxed and on holiday, and when we're not in Appledore, we're constantly looking forward to our next visit. We're very proud of our traditional fisherman's cottage, and hope that you love it as much as we do. Do feel free to contact us by email on email@example.com or by phone on 07812635678 should you have any questions.

Felt like a home from home.
During our stay the weather wasn't great so spent a bit more time in the house than we would have normally. The heating was great and we had everything we needed. Lots of books on local history which enhanced our stay as could spend time researching history of town and local area.
Thanks Drew - much appreciated. Do get in touch should you want to visit again in the future.

nice and traditional
A comfortable, cosy, traditional cottage in a lovely village. Nice and spacious, everything we needed. Really good for visiting areas in North Devon, George the owner sent really good directions and areas of interest a couple of days before check in which is very useful. What was really nice was that George sent a message the day before check in to wish us a safe journey, also he replied very quickly to any messages sent. We will be staying again that's a promise.
Dear Bridgette, very many thanks indeed for taking the time to write this message. Great to hear, and so glad that you had an enjoyable stay at Shipwrights. Do get in touch when you'd like to stay again in the future. Best wishes,
We love Appledore
A very pleasant holiday in the heart of Appledore.
A lovely week at Shipwright Cottage
Finley my Irish Setter and I spent a happy week at the cottage. The house is well equiped and comfortable. The bed linen and towels were good. The outside loo was a bonus.
The area is extremely dog friendly. We had meals at The Royal George [amazing views ] and The Beaver and enjoyed the local fish and chips.
The house is very close to a public carpark ,hardly further away than my present garage.Everyone we met was very friendly.
George ,the owner, was very hepful.

Westward Ho! beach is under two miles away and other surf beaches such as Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe are no more than 30 minutes’ drive.
The ancient market towns of Bideford (5mins) and Barnstaple (15 mins) are within close proximity providing a range of shopping and other amenities.
Appledore has a rich maritime heritage mainly through its links to the shipbuilding yard which was founded in 1855 and remains one of the area’s largest employers today. Tales of seafaring deeds and smugglers’ exploits abound – harking back to the village’s history as an important trade link when ships used to bring tobacco and spices from abroad. Its maze of narrow streets, which appear in a striking kaleidoscope of pastel colours, leads to the quay which is central to life in this fishing community. Here, among the activities on offer are fishing trips, crabbing contests and ferry trips to Instow on the opposite side of the estuary. The village boasts a thriving arts and crafts industry, and there are numerous galleries and shops to explore in the back streets and along the quayside. There are plenty of restaurants and pubs to choose from which offer fresh fish and fine local ales as well as a variety of music entertainment on certain evenings. The Beaver Inn and the Royal George in particular, both a stone’s throw from the cottage, have excellent menus and stunning estuary views. Sylvester’s is the award-winning local chippy on Meeting Street and people can buy quality fish and chips before sitting out on the quay front and watching the ships sail by as they tuck in.
Other nearby attractions include the steep cobbled village of Clovelly, and the Tarka Trail, a cycling and nature route skirting the coast in either direction punctuated with places to stop for refreshment. There are also many fun days out for young families at places such as The Big Sheep animal centre and The Milky Way adventure theme park. Or if you fancy venturing a little further afield you could try the Exmoor Zoo – home of the “Exmoor Beast”!
