For us a villa in the sun had to have the perfect west facing aspect for sunset family dinners on the terrace. It needed to be close enough to fantastic restaurants & local amenities (like mains electricity, internet, supermarket, pharmacy, kids playpark etc), rural enough for open views & tranquility, & as close as possible to the surf. Plus it needed thoughtful safety & entertainment for young children to ensure parents can relax. We’d been renting villas for years in the Canaries & had not found the perfect house so in 2012 built our own. It’s full of unique features like the 12 x 7m sports pitch with 6 hole putting green & rare features like the electrically heated pool to ensure warmth even in the winter. Two master bedrooms have super kingsize beds, every mattress & all linen in the villa is the finest quality to ensure the perfect nights sleep. It’s an incredible house for a couple, a family or a group of friends to visit. We hope you can enjoy it too.

About Emmalene Churcher
Guy & Anna Cribb, parents of three boys. Guy spent 25 years travelling the world spending about four months a year sleeping in hotels, villas, vans and board bags- firstly a professional windsurfer and more recently as an acclaimed international windsurfing coach. He knows how important a comfortable bed is! Anna works tirelessly with their three boys so she knows how important a good nights sleep is! They both love Fuerte as it has the best beaches for kids the world over, perfect surf & year round sunshine, yet is only just down the road from northern Europe. They have built this house to suit their family & friends needs after years of searching for the right one. It is little surprise it is the coolest pad in town! My name is Emma, Guy's P.A., I will answer your query.
Emmalene Churcher purchased this Villa in 2012
Why Emmalene Churcher chose Lajares
"We had travelled to Fuerte many times due to the perfect weather, surf, beaches and lagoons for kids, combined with great food, real Canarian culture and no package tourists, all just a 3.30hr flight from our local airport. We stayed in lots of villas over the years but found faults in all of them, thus not returning to any of them again. One luxury villa even had the water tank lid left off- a complete death trap! We tried hotels but didn't enjoy some of the other residents, so we decided to invest in our own villa that could cover all the safety aspects, luxury features, comfort, outdoor living and sports access we're into. After extensive planning and work we now have our dream villa with no detail left unconsidered. Next is to find time to use it! Until then, it's yours!
What makes this Villa unique
Most Canarian villas have south facing terraces to shelter from the north east trade winds & enjoy winter sun. Ours too, BUT for us one of the most important aspects of holidays is to have outdoor dining, so we have a perfect west facing terrace with uninterrupted views to enjoy sunset dinners & BBQ with family or friends- we have not seen another villa like it. Children's entertainment and safety is paramount to ensure a relaxing holiday- parents can be sure we've thought of everything. We've even got an electrically heated pool which is vital in the winter. Ultimately though it's the location- we're close enough to stroll into the village yet far enough out to have very few neighbours and open landscape around us. Most people think this is the best villa in town. We certainly do.

Felt like home
On the day that we left my 10 year old son said "that felt like home". It was clear from day one that Sonrisa was more than just a villa, we were (family of 6 with youngest aged 10 and eldest 16) staying in somebody else's, very much loved, home. We were comfortable, spoilt with poolside loungers, cushioned gazebo and even a hammock. Every need was taken care of, especially the children's with the heated pool and outside games area.
The island was full of surprises from delicious cake and coffee in a local café, to exhilarating waves crashing in on the West coast near El Cotillo (less than 10 minute drive from villa), to early 15th century towns in the mountains, to overwhelming volcanic craters.
Easily our favourite holiday to date and we will be returning to Villa Sonrisa!
It was a pleasure to host you Bill, we hope you return again some day!
Perfect for family holidays
I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU! For our wonderful holiday at Villa Sonrisa.
I visited for 9 nights from 18th to 27th March with my two children aged 2 1/2years and 4 months, my mother-in-law and husband. It was better than a home from home with books and toys suitable for my 2 1/2 year old; a potty for our recently potty trained little lady; children’s cutlery and plastic bowls and plates etc; a baby bath for our little boy etc etc. You have really thought of everything a family could need whilst on holiday.
The green was perfect for a 2 year old to tire out all 3 adults! I realised I can still shoot a ball through a basket ball hoop - hoorah! My husband developed an addiction to putting whilst we were there 😂
We loved our morning caffe con lecce and croissant at El Goloso where my daughter played on the slide whilst we enjoyed breakfast.
The pool was wonderful and a lovely temperature for the little people.
As we left we couldn’t help but start to plan when we could next come back.
Look forward to booking our return visit soon
Ideal villa, good layout, and good location
Lovely villa. Good layout, pool good temperature.
Local coffee shops lovely , handy supermarket.
Lots of great beaches nearby and plenty of activities, walked to volcano from villa, went surfing, hired road bikes etc
Minor points we couldn't find light switch for the pool or pumps for the bikes.
Thank you Zoe, we hope you decide to return again one day.
The villa was lovely
We have older boys but did notice how safe it would be for younger children and plenty of activities for them too. Ours liked just hanging about in the hammock and other chairs. We had a wonderful time exploring the North of the Island in the hire car and found some amazing beaches. I would highly recommend taking the Catarmaran 4 hour trip from Correlejo. We took wetsuits to use in the sea and also went bodyboarding but there were certain places/days a swimsuit was fine. We went in January and we were told by locals that it was much more windy than normal for this time of year which made the temperature of the vila feel quite cold ( especially after coming from a heated house) so I would recommend taking warm clothes and blankets to relax in the evenings. There were electric heaters which took the chill off the air.
Thanks for your review Tracey - we hope to welcome you back again one day.
Great holiday excellent villa
Spent a really relaxing 10 days at the villa. Children aged from 4-8 didn't want to get out of the lovely warm pool and when they did enjoyed chilling out in their room looking at books and toys. Villa very stylish, some great original art and very comfortable beds! Outside eating area was the perfect place to enjoy our daily purchases from one of two great local bakeries. Larajes is really well situated for the amazing lagoon beaches, the northern tracks for surfing and more touristy towns for some shopping. All in all best holiday in a while hope to return can't recommend the villa and town enough!
We spent a week a Sonrisa with our own 2 boys and friends with their 2 children. It was everything we'd hoped for; well-equipped, perfect location, tranquil, great evening views of sunsets ....
The variety of space around the outside is great; whether you want to chill, splash, play ... it's all there.
What made our week most special was the feeling of being at home because the villa has personality as well as being functional. It's obviously loved by it's owners and I expect by everybody who stays.
Special interest holidays:
Surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, tow-in surfing, walking, mountain biking, cookery, photography, language and art courses all potentially available by request.
5 mins drive to Northshore surf- Villa Sonrisa is in a unique position with a direct short cut to the North Shore of Fuerteventura making it one of the closest houses to the best surf in the Canary Islands.
6 mins drive to the fishing village of El Cortillo.
10 mins drive to the stunning north shore lagoons- some of the best secluded lagoons for kids on the planet.
10 mins drive to Corralejo.
15 mins to the famous dunes & beaches.
Cycle track from our house 20 mins ride to El Cortillo.
How to get there
Puerto Del Rosario Airport (FUE) is 35 mins drive. Guests staying at Villa Sonrisa are recommended to enjoy our Toyota Rav4 during their stay- a 5 door 4x4 for half the price of a rental car and no queuing or paperwork to collect it- saving you hours of hassle!
Locally you can walk or use the villa bicycle to nip in and out of the village.
Lanzarote Airport (ACE) is also very close- about 100 mins away- 15 min taxi to Corellejo, 30 min ferry to Lanzarote, 30 min taxi t
Lajares village centre with lots of cafes, bars and restaurants is less than 1000m away/ few minute walk. Nearest restaurant is only 300m walk & it’s one of the best on the island!
Most surf, beaches and attractions approx 5-20 mins drive away.
Oasis safari park 1 hour drive south (amazing for kids).
Lajares is home to local Spanish and the cosmopolitan surfers who’ve made Fuerte their home. There are no ‘bucket and spade’ package tourists here, nor any hotels or apartment complexes. The atmosphere is very chilled out and international. The village has eight surf shops and businesses, nine cafes, bars and very good restaurants (the closest to our house is run by a Michelin 2 star chef!), a hardware store, pharmacy, a few boutique shops, art gallery, two art schools, camel farm, kids play park, active community area for performances and markets and a very well equipped supermarket. It’s regarded as the coolest village on the island.
It does not have late nightlife or discos, although some of the bars have live music and misbehaviour, & Corelejo is only 10 mins away if this is what you’re after.
Nearby are all sorts of activities including mountain biking, trekking, horse riding and endless watersports. Our villa has recommended places of interest for sports, exploring or relaxing in the welcome pack.
Baby sitting, occasional in house chef, daily maid service (by prior arrangement), art or language classes for kids or adults, surf schools- all of this can be arranged as optional extras.
We can include a Toyota Rav4 rental car with your booking. The car is privately owned for sole use of Villa Sonrisa guests, as such we are able to offer it at only £200 per week, significantly cheaper than other car hire companies. But the best news is you don't have to queue for it- so you can maximise your time at the villa rather than the airport. On arrival, just jump in a taxi and on route to the villa collect the car, a short distance from the airport. No paperwork to sign, no queuing, no wandering around car parks- this is the fastest way to collect your car and the best price- please consider our offer. FYI some car hire companies can take two hours to arrange locally, especially the 'off airport' cars.
Unlike many villas in Lajares, ours is easy to
