Please read my reviews on Trip Advisor, and you will see why my guests regularly return!

April and May are beautiful, with many days in the 70's ( low 20's) and the flowers and plants are blooming.
June is my favourite month with warm sea and deserted beaches.
Then comes the high heat and humidity in the summer months of July and August, which is a great time to visit for the beaches and the sea, where the sea temperature rises to 80 degrees (26) and the activities that the town arrange for the visiting Romans, such as jazz in the park, rock bands in the piazza, carnival, local pageant, and wine tastings etc, most of which are free to attend. The town is very lively at this time of year.
September is quiet when all the Romans have left, but the summer is by no means over, and the beaches are once again deserted and quiet, but with high temperatures and perfect for a peaceful beach holiday, we also have our patron saint festa the last weekend in September with concerts, bands and fireworks.
October is still summer here, and you can still expect weather similar to that in May if not warmer.
November is relatively quiet, but December is a beautiful time to visit, when near Christmas, the town is bedecked with lights, Christmas trees and baubles. Carole concerts are held in the churches and cathedrals and groups of local folk singers walk the streets. There are also local produce Christmas markets and art festivals. On December 26 and January 1 and 6 the town holds it's annual Presepe Vivente.(living nativity) where the towns folk (including us!) dress up in period costume and set out their houses as scenes from a nativity. It's a wonderful event.

Vasto town is built on the Roman ruins of Histonium, and is a Medieval town with great charm and character. There is plenty to see and do in the town itself, churches and cathedrals, the Roman baths with mosaics, a Medieval Castle, the lovely park with it's large duck pond and fountain and the Palace. There is also a running track, a tennis club, and indoor swimming pool and fitness club with gym, all within a few minutes walk of the house.

On a Saturday morning there is a local produce market selling cheese, cured meats and fresh fruit and vegetables from the local farms. It is full of local characters and a great photo opportunity. There is also another Saturday market selling a variety of goods including leather bags and belts, clothes and shoes.

There are plenty of pavement cafes and bars and restaurants to while away the days in, along with the many high class boutiques to window shop in. There are museums, art galleries, a costume museum, archaeological gardens in the Palazzo. A large portion of the town is pedestrian only and therefore safe and quiet. A favourite pastime of the Vastese is the passegiata or evening stroll, where everybody dresses in their finest and strolls around the town chatting and stopping for aperativo with friends.

Although Vasto is little known in Europe, it is an Italian secret, and a favourite summer destination of the wealthy Romans, who have been coming here for years, many having second homes here. It offers plenty to do for a long weekend or with the added bonus of the beach, a fortnights holiday. Please remember this is the 'real' Italy, so not many people here speak English. (But we supply all our guests with a phrase book) All restaurant menus are in Italian. I do provide a brochure in the house with a guide of what to expect, but you will not find International cuisine here, it is very Italian and restaurants serve mainly fish based dishes and lots of vegetarian options. The local delicacy is Brodetto, a fish stew cooked with olive oil, tomatoes and garlic, delicious! The locals here rise early, eat at 12.30 then have a siesta, then aperativi are served at 18.00. The restaurants do not open until 20.00 after which it is time for another passagiata before bed which is midnight or later in high summer.

Cultural events occur throughout the year, with festivals of music, classical and rock concerts, Jazz in the park, film festival and food festivals, along with historical pageantry dating back to the 17th century. The local saints day of San Michele is a festa held on the last weekend in September and is a massive celebration with bands, music, market stalls all ending the the biggest and best firework display you have ever seen! Almost all of these are free to attend or watch. Aqualand water park (15 minutes by bus)is one of the biggest in the region and has many fun slides and amusements.

You can hire a car in Vasto if you wish to explore further afield, including the nature reserves, the Majaletta mountain park and the caves and grottoes. There are nearby old hill towns to explore too.

Vasto is on the Adriatic coast of the Chieti region of Abruzzo and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are many national parks and nature reserves, The Appenine mountains are only 1 h 15 mins by car should you wish to explore further afield and drive up to the Maiella mountain.

The cavellone caves are a fantastic day out in the summer, and a break from the heat in July or August. The view from the cable car over the mountains is not to be missed.

The Tremiti Islands are reachable by ferry (50 mins) daily from Termoli and Vasto port in summer.

Centrally located little gem
Good central location, close to shops, bars & restaurants. Situated in a quaint little Piazza with many alleyways which lead to different parts of the old town - but you soon find your way around! The property was very clean, the bedroom was confortable & bathroom very spacious. Judy & James were very helpful and even text us to see if we wanted the air conditioning on when it got very hot - we were glad we accepted their offer. The A/C was very effective and very quiet. We soon got into the Italian routine of having our Siesta between 12.30 and 4pm, we enjoyed breakfast at Bar Roma in the Piazza Rossetti and our Apperol Spritz at Bar Miro in the evenings. Vasto beach is long & sandy & very clean and it is an easy walk from the old town. It's a good idea to get the bus back up the hill! If you're looking for a centrally located but tucked away property in the old town, this is it.

Perfect House in a Perfect Location!!
This house is beautiful and in a perfect location to the old town of Vasto. The house is very well presented, spotlessly clean and everything had been thought of from linen to pots, pans, cooking essentials such as olive oil to dvds and beach toys for the children. We were very impressed with the owners Judy and James for their efficiency and accuracy in everything, they supplied us with a lot of information on Vasto such as local restaurants and places to visit, as well as parking, they were very thorough. They also kept us informed of everything that was going on in town so we didn’t miss out. We absolutely LOVED Vasto. We will definitely come back again. Thank you!

Charming quiet house in the centre of the city
We really enjoyed our first stay in Italy. The house is centrally located, yet it is still very quiet. I cooked at home most nights and used the excellent local produce. There are plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance too. I personally don't like touristy places and had no real desire to be in crowds of tourists spoiling the sights. Vasto is a great compromise. It has beautiful architecture, lots of shops and yet a very good beach is withing walking distance. The walk back is uphill, but there are plenty of cheap buses to take you back. We spoke no Italian, but got by with a couple of basic words. People here are very friendly and willing to help. I even managed to get a new pair of glasses as my main pair broke. (Shouldn't've gone to a well-known opticians!). The optician spoke no English but a professor customer, exemplifying the friendliness, spoke French and Italian and he helped me! Judith and James are extremely knowledgeable about the town they clearly adore. There are plenty of recommendations listed in the casa. I drove all the way from England but we didn't need to use the car in the fortnight we were there. Vasto was too nice to leave. This was an excellent two weeks for us. Thank you Judith and James!

Charming place for a short break
This 'casa' is full of charm, both inside and out. Inside, the accommodation is clean and well decorated but with some old features that give it a real home-like feel. Outside, the location is stunning, set amongst the winding back-streets of the medieval town of Vasto. We really enjoyed being able to 'fall out of bed' into sunny cafes and restaurants right on the doorstep. The beach is a short walk (down a hill). Vasto is a beautiful town and this casa lets you soak in the beauty from a great location.

About the host

Host profile image
I retired young (under 40) and live in Vasto, Abruzzo with my wife Judy. We bought our apartment in 2006 for a holiday home, and loved it so much here that within 3 years we had moved here permanently! We have now bought another house in the same town only 5 minutes walk away from the apartment also for rental. We spend most of our time snorkelling or fishing or at our country house in the garden. In the winter, we drive up to the Maiella mountains, just over an hour away and go skiing. We have settled into life in Italy very well, and have befriended many of the locals, which has in turn given us local knowledge and an insider view of Vasto that most visitors or tourists would not experience. We are now happy to pass on our knowledge to our guests. We can help with trips to local vineyards to taste the wine and local delicacies. We can help with restaurant recommendations, the best beaches to go to, where to hire a car, a taxi, bus times and a multitude of other information. We supply a brochure in all our properties outlining what to see and do around Vasto and we try to help our guests have the best holiday for them that is possible. We also supply guide books, maps and brochures on the area. We inform all our guests on arrival of any special events taking place in the town during their stay. Please read our Trip Advisor reviews to see what our previous guests think about our properties, Vasto and us. We are pleased to say that our apartment earned a Certificate of Excellence for 2014 and 2017, 2019 and now 2020 Travellers Choice Award..

Why they chose this property

In 2006 we were looking for a holiday home in Italy, and stumbled across the fairly unknown Abruzzo. It's beautiful countryside and lively towns drew us to it along with it's huge sandy sweeping beaches. Vasto is one of the very few Medieval towns that sit along the coastline, close enough to walk to the beach. Most are located in the hills a good drive away from the sea. This is what makes Vasto so special. The town has grown into a sophisticated holiday resort for wealthy Romans, many of whom have a second home here for the summer. We bought our Medieval apartment, and then after 3 years decided to move here permanently and rent out our apartment. We had such a great success with it, this year we decided to buy another property for rental and were lucky enough to find this fantastic little house in a bright sunny but quiet residential piazza, centrally located only a few meters from the restaurants and bars. It is also only 5 minutes walk from our other apartment. The town is still relatively unknown elsewhere, and therefore unspoilt by tourism. If you want a 'real' Italian holiday, then come here not only for the beaches, but the beautiful town itself and all it has to offer.

You can fly direct from London Stansted to Pescara in 2 hours, and Vasto is 50 minutes from Pescara airport. We can arrange a private pick-up service for you on request. Car hire is readily available at Pescara airport on arrival.
Vasto is also easily reachable from Rome, and air-conditioned coaches run from Tiburtina in Rome direct to the coach station in Vasto. The journey is about 3 hours, and is very comfortable . I can provide timetables on request. The journey costs around €16 one way. Some coaches also run direct to/from Fiumicino airport in Rome.
A good cheap train service runs up and down the coast from Vasto - San Salvo station.
The local transport network is cheap, €1 a ticket on the bus. Coaches run to Naples and Bologna as well as Rome.
I can supply local taxi numbers too

What makes this property unique

Whilst you might find other properties for rent in Abruzzo, almost all will be located in or near hilltowns a long drive from the coast. In Vasto, we have the best of both worlds, with beautiful scenery, and a town with a sea view and walkable beach. There really is no need for a car here, unlike other hill towns, as everything is right here on your doorstep. Not only is the house walking distance to the beach, it is only a couple of minutes walk to the many restaurants, bars and pavement cafes. Everything is here for a perfect holiday all within easy reach.

Vasto town is situated just above the Adriatic coast of Italy and the house is within walking distance 15 mins (down steps) or 5 minutes on the bus, of the beach.

Vasto marina beach is a huge sandy shallow sloping beach with water ideal for children. Here you can hire sunbeds and umbrellas and behind the beach there are snack bars and restaurants. You can also hire motor boats and pedalos from here. It is reachable by car or regular bus in 5 minutes or a 20 minute walk down. It holds the prestigious Blue Flag award. The closest beach is reachable down steps and is a 15 minute walk. It is a small rock and pebble beach ideal for snorkeling and fishing.

Aqualand water park is only 15 minutes away by bus and is ideal for a day with children.

Vasto is on the Adriatic coast of the Chieti region of Abruzzo and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are many national parks and nature reserves, with caves and grottoes nearby, both inland and by the sea easily accessible from Vasto.

Cultural events occur throughout the year, with festivals of music, classical and rock concerts, Jazz in the park, film festival and food festivals, along with historical pageantry dating back to the 17th century. Most events are free to attend.

The seafood is Vasto is some of the best a freshest you will have tasted. Our speciality is Brodetto, a fish stew with garlic, tomatoes and olive oil. Shellfish is also a local dish.
