About KAREN ASKEW

Karen and Chris from Northamptonshire UK. We run a Blind company here in Northants and recently got married.

The Blind Company Herdman Blinds has been running since 1960 and we have a busy schedule most days but we find time to juggle work and 3 young adults, 3 dogs, 4 chickens and a goat.

We both enjoy riding motorbikes and travelling across Europe and beyond and plan to enter the arctic circle this year as we have travelled to the Sahara Desert so why not do the complete opposite.

We met online around 4 years ago and found we share a real passion for putting life back into old properties.

We have just finished renovating this little house in France and spent most of our spare time back and forth to France in the last year. We both enjoy doing up properties and we have another project on the go in Devon, UK. It is completely different from the property in France by about 4 bedrooms lol.

We have decided to see how this lovely house performs on lettings and feedback. No one wants our guests to enjoy this little venture more than we do. We want feedback and we hope we have put into place everything they need to have a brilliant time.

KAREN ASKEW purchased this house in 2016

Why KAREN ASKEW chose L'Isle-Jourdain

Location was without doubt the main draw for this lovely house. Th ehouse was in very poor condition when we arrived but wow what a view and it has a cave. Yes a real 3 chambered cave which was what absolutely swung it for me haha. The garden sits on top of the cave and the views were never tiresome. Whether we visited in winter, autumn, spring or summer it just made us feel relaxed and at peace. Then we discovered it is close to the Val de Vienne Racetrack which was a real bonus for us.

The place has a real British / French feel as there are many expats out there and they all get along really well. We have enjoyed great nights in the bars with French and Brits alike. Complete strangers buying drinks and visa versa with party atmospheres erupting at anytime.

What I love is the peace, the feeling of life slowing down, relaxing with an air of romance.

We still have so much to discover and I have put a diary in the house for any peopke who wish to share there experiences. Days out, places to go as it is around every corner there is another place to visit.

Chris always wanted a place in France and therefore it is so :)

What makes this house unique

The cave is definitely an amazing draw. How cool is it to have a proper little cave on your property. I love the quirky nature of the house. Built into a rock face with the church behind and listening to the bells ring out is just so relaxing.

Oh and let me say if you hear a donkey braying across the waters you are hearing right. He calls around 4 or 5 times a day and makes me smile everytime.

The sunsets are breathtaking and the views were fabulous. There is a real closeness to look out upon the River and be a stones throw away.

The house had such a feeling of welcome and cosiness. We fell in love with it the moment we went to see it. We made an offer straight away and 6 weeks later we went down to sign for it.

We knew it would be transformed into a real haven for us and gradually we decided it would be a real great place to share with other folk.

It is small so I do recommend couples with maybe one or 2 children but I wouldn't recommend it for 4 adults unless you are very close.

We also wanted to bring to the table everything we miss when we travel around and hope we have covered most of it.

Kate lives 2 doors away and is always around to help, give advice, places to go or just have a chat.

We want people to love it that is all!

What a fantastic home!

  • 5 of 5

We were totally blown away by "Nôtre Maison". It was a super little place, renovated to a great standard, well equipped and such a wonderful location.

With a warm welcome from Kate and Alan and basket of essential groceries to get us started, we were well set up straight away.

On entering Nôtre Maison, it's straight into a large kitchen diner fully equipped with fridge, oven and hob and even a coffee maker. Everything was just as we imagined. The bathroom and shower were fantastic too.

Having the living area upstairs is such a good idea, there's no wasted space and the views from the window across the Vienne river are breathtaking.

Parking opposite the house was easy with our little car, and the house is located within a few minutes walk of the town centre.

All in all, we had a great time and would say to anyone considering Nôtre Maison and L'Isle Jourdain - just do it!

Lovely and idyllic retreat on the French Vienne

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in L'isle de Jourdain and even had a nice bit of early April sun. The home is quirky, clean and cosy. It's well furnished and has all the facilities needed for a comfortable stay. There is even British television through Amazon Prime channels which was great to watch in the evenings. Not that we had many evenings in as there is lots to see and do in the town itself but also outside - many breathtaking hiking trails and ammenities around. There are many British residents around so it was nice to occasionally hear a 'hello' whilst out in the many pubs and restaurants of the town. Futuroscope is a must if you can travel out far enough and Oradour Sur Glane - albeit being a small distance is amazing to witness. Definitely will stay again.

We loved our stay so much we have already decided to book again. The property is well maintained and clean with great local facilities. Explore the area and you will find the locals friendly and some lovely places to go out for a drink and/or eat. If you are looking for a perfect retreat for a break then this is the most wonderful place to stay.
