About Kate Collet-Fenson

We are the Collet-Fenson family - Kate & Duncan, Lucy and Charlie. We live and work in Buckinghamshire but love to escape to North Devon at any opportunity. In Bucks we live in a shared house with my parents, who being retired spend much of the year traveling and looking after Lantern House on our behalf. As a family we love to ski but have found that surfing is a great deal more affordable and practical to do on a regular basis. We love Ilfracombe and North Devon for its quirkiness and opportunities, there are some many unexplored areas, secret coves and adventures to be enjoyed, we can't keep away and love to share it with friends and family. We have set up the house with family and friends in mind, so all you need to do is turn up!

Kate Collet-Fenson purchased this house in 2007

Why Kate Collet-Fenson chose Ilfracombe

We bought Lantern House in 2007 because as a family we love surfing, paddle boarding, sailing and dog walking. We have spent many happy holidays at Lantern House and my brother and his family have re-located to Ilfracombe because we have had so much fun there over the years.

We are a 3 generation family and have kitted the house out to suit all ages, it is a great party house and works really well for self catering groups. Ilfracombe is perfectly located for a mixed group holiday. There is access to rock pool, bucket & spade beaches in the town and then a short drive away you are at the award winning surfing beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde and just a few miles from the rugged beauty of Exmoor National Park.

What makes this house unique

Being on the edge of the town, we have the convenience of shops, cinema, swimming pool, tennis court, crazy golf, pitch and putt and seaside fun all within a short walk. We have on-site car-parking, right next door and a bus stop outside the house. We often find that we park the car and don't move it for a week!

The house is kitted out for big family groups and we pride ourselves in the how well equipped the house is. We aim to ensure you can cater for up to 18, with big pans, dishes and plenty of crockery and cutlery, plenty of storage, fridge space etc. We also have filled the house with fun, so that should you have the "odd" wet day there is plenty to keep all generations amused and happy.

Dogs are very welcome - dog walking in the area is amazing.

Comfortable, clean & ideal family holiday house

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing family stay at this comfortable & clean character house.

The number of bedrooms, bathrooms & W.C.s ensured that our group of 10 people

were never falling over each other, & the views of the harbour especially with the sunshine added to our most enjoyable holiday.

There were a number of nice eating places, such as the Quay as well as pubs, inns & great choices for both fish & chips & ice cream parlours.

With lovely areas to visit such as Woolacombe & Croyde Bay, this is an ideal spot for touring around & we can thoroughly recommend the " Lantern House " for all ages.

Fabulous spacious character family home with stunning views

  • 4 of 5

The owners have equipped this house so well it feels like home from home. Entertainment for all ages whatever the weather.

Ilfracombe has plenty of little shops to explore with a lovely sandy beach in the harbour. A very English unspoilt seaside town.

The property was like wearing your favorite jumper, cozy and comfortable. inc holes and saggy ness

  • 3 of 5

We booked Lantern House for a family holiday, the group ranged between 55 years old and 9 months . The situation of the property was just perfect for our needs , central to the beautiful harbor, shops and cafes, with secret ally ways down to the harbor, which the children loved exploring. The town is a five minute walk , the butchers and bakers have amazing fresh products and very friendly staff. The house itself was not what i expected, the photos on the site show the beautiful views of the habor and sea , and the chaise-long in the picture was everyone favorite,a lovely spot to watch the sun set, and the boats. We held a family wedding celebration in the garden , , with extra family visiting for the day , with the sun shinning and 21 guests ,the garden and the play room , give us ample space. The ability to use the owners garage for car parking was an fantastic plus , enough space for 4 cars.

The down side , was the condition on parts of the property , which i was disappointed with as the price for the weeks stay was not cheap . There was some health and safety issues , lots of extension leads , a hole in the living room floor , which was big enough for my crawling granddaughter to trap her foot down, we had to make sure it was covered at all times. the store cupboard which housed the washer ,dryer , boiler extra bedding etc felt like a dumping ground ,someof the sheets on the beds had seen better days ,they where clean but stained, and in parts of the property the floor felt unsafe. , The toys left in the garden for the children to use , where worn and weathered, with one breaking in half while my 4 year old granddaughter was riding it.

As a family we had an amazing time together , Ilfracombe is a lovely place and we made lovely memories . The House was enjoyed , the children loved it, the adults had a relaxed time . I had a fantastic time with my family , just felt a little let down by the property.

Lovely House

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time - ten adults and two children staying, but we also hosted a 70th birthday lunch for 20 people. Really well equipped house - loads of glasses, bowls, cooking equipment etc. Comfy beds and fabulous views. The children enjoyed all the toys too. We all got really fit on the stairs, but Ilfracombe is hilly so there's no getting away from that. It was cold while we were there, but the heating was efficient. Lovely support from the owner's family too. Thank you!

Owner's Response: To the Bonnin Family thank you so much for your lovely review and for choosing Lantern House and Ilfracombe for your big celebration. Thanks also for letting us know about the mid-behaving hob - we replaced it just in time before the next arrival. No luck on the keys I am afraid. Wishing you all the best for a great summer and hope to welcome you back one day. With very best wishes Kate
