Overview

About the property

Barn Nr. Ruthin. Ideal for 2. Own rear garden. Accessible. Woodburning Stove

The Shippon, Melin-y-Wig

Cosy Wood burning stove.

This self-contained stone cottage is part of several dwellings at Bryn Halen Mawr. Dating back to the 1700s, we converted this derelict barn in 2006. The Shippon (at the top of the farmyard) is a single storey semi-detached cottage that has its own enclosed rear garden with fantastic views. Bryn Halen Mawr is no longer a working farm but cattle and sheep do graze in neighbouring fields. There’s a bridleway at the bottom of the yard and it’s a great spot for walking and wonderful for star gazing.

The views from the rear garden are uninterrupted and far reaching across open fields, a picturesque valley and on to Clocaenog Forest, a couple of miles away. Off the busy tourist trail, deep in the country, two miles from the nearest main road and with no passing traffic, you have found a peaceful location for a 'get away from it all’ holiday.

The layout: this ground floor cottage is open-plan having a living area with leather sofa and recliner; a well-equipped kitchen and large hand-built dining table with wooden chairs. A cute wood burning stove gives a warm and cosy atmosphere. The wooden A-frames add height and an airy feel to the place. A comfortable lounge area faces double oak french doors to the private fenced garden, where you can watch the sunset over the hills, the birds at the feeder or the spring lambs in the adjacent field (or TV!). Off the lounge is the good-sized bedroom with hand-built king-size (5ft wide) wooden bed, dressing table and wardrobe. Wooden floors throughout.

The spacious wet room is accessed via a sliding wooden door.

It is fully tiled with rain shower, sink and toilet and hand-made oak fittings. Guests have said it's a pleasure to use.

The whole place is accessible for wheelchair users and those using walking aids, but it is for everybody (and their well behaved pets). Please note: there are uneven areas outside the property.

Location: We’re between Ruthin (9.5 miles) and Corwen (7.5 miles). Best places to pick up supplies and to eat out are in Ruthin. Chester is 45 minutes drive, Manchester and Liverpool just over an hour and Birmingham under 2 hours. North and West Coasts are just an hour's drive if you wish to explore beaches and many beauty spots and attractions on the way.

We’re about 290 metres high nestled in the beautiful hills of Denbighshire. From the farm yard there are also great views of the Clwydian hills. There are many walks from the door so if you climb the hill opposite the farm yard there are spectacular views towards Snowdonia. You can be on the fringes of Snowdonia down the A5 in 30 minutes.

Great rambles nearby reveal stunning views in every direction. Even in North Wales, renowned for its beauty, this area stands out. Bring wellies and outdoor gear. For adventurous guests the North Wales Zipwire, Bounce Below and Surf Snowdonia are all within reach and many visitors are taking advantage of these exciting activities.

The owners live in the adjacent barn.

There are neighbours who live in the farmhouse on the other side of the yard and there are other holiday guests on site, so although it’s off the beaten track, you’re not isolated.

About Robin Spreckley

We are Jan and Robin Spreckley and we moved to Bryn Halen Mawr from Twickenham in 2003. The old farmhouse and derelict barns were ideal so Robin could develop his existing practical skills with a barn conversion project. We lived in the Farmhouse for 2 years while renovating and redecorating it and we moved into the barn one week before the first guests arrived in the farmhouse for Easter 2005. In those 2 years, we were always working on some part of the house. The Shippon was finished in 2006, the windows, doors & interior planned and built by Robin and a handy neighbour. Jan's done all kinds of jobs. We enjoy DIY, gardening and growing a little fruit and veg. We have two cats who love country life.

Robin Spreckley purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Robin Spreckley chose Corwen

We looked in this area because property was available with outbuildings for conversion and as soon as we saw the area we were bowled over by the beauty of the rural landscape. It felt away from the madding crowd, yet easily reached from several major cities in the North West and the Midlands. The area seemed to have a lot of untapped potential as a tourist destination, especially for people wanting a weekend away from it all without spending too much time in the car getting there. Primarily we came to North Wales to be near Jan's mother who was not well and needed support at that time.

What makes this cottage unique

Quote from guest "The property is so peaceful, the view over from the living room and garden so gorgeous it is amazingly relaxing. Add the abundant bird life seen from the comfort of the sofa and the pleasure of using a simple, well-thought-out property with bespoke joinery and it is very hard to leave. The proper wet room is also a joy."

Guestbook comments from the owner

“We have over 40 years self catering experience in a variety of properties and, to be honest, not many could equal let alone excel the Shippon in terms of quality of finish, level of provision, cleanliness and locality. All are excellent. We love the rustic charm of the cottage, particularly the carpentry and joinery. The ideal location for our much needed winter break.” Brian and Marian, Carlisle.

“We have stayed in many cottages over the years, but this is undoubtedly the best. Thank you for a really quality experience: the warm welcome, beautifully fitted & equipped kitchen & the garden herbs which we were able to make good use of. We were impressed by the quality of the woodwork and fittings!

An excellent holiday.” Peter and Marie from Yorkshire

Fantastic getaway from reality! Could not recommend enough!

  • 5 of 5

I don't often write reviews but had to take the time to write something about this wonderful property and its even more wonderful owners Robin and Jan. The property itself is beautifully located 'away from it all'. You rarely hear anything but birds and wildlife. Really is a fantastic getaway from a busy life. The views from the garden are unbelievable with stunning sunsets - genuinely I can not put this into words. Easy to drive to with excellent directions from Robin and Jan. The property itself is perfectly kept and clean. I have never been to a cottage with so many amenities. The little things like foil, pestle and mortars, blenders, really feels like you are in a home from home. I have to give this credit to Robin and Jan who truly care about the property and the people that stay in it. They were wonderful to talk to, we spoke for hours! But at the same time they are happy to leave you to it if you want. They were so helpful on local walks and travel tips. In addition they were happy for us to bring our cat and new kitten which was very kind of them. Overall, if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful trip to get away from it all, you have found the place. Could not recommend enough and will certainly be returning!! Thank you greatly from Danny, Jenny, Nala and Kiwi.

Lovely cottage, very well equipped

  • 5 of 5

Went with our 2 GSD's and we loved that the garden was secure and that there was an extra area that they could run around in which was also secure. Everything in the cottage that you need , very well equipped. Very peaceful and beautiful area. Would definitely make a return visit.

Comfortable & Relaxing in Peaceful Surroundings

  • 5 of 5

The Shippon and its location is simply perfect for a 3 night stay in complete peaceful and beautiful surroundings. The barn is fully equipped with everything we needed and more! It is very clean and comfortable with lots of outdoor space to further relax in. I was aware the property allows for dogs and I suffer from slight allergies but Robin was very good with the communication and reassured me the place was thoroughly cleaned before our arrival.

Sitting on the sofa looking out of the double doors to the view beyond was very relaxing and gave an opportunity to do some bird spotting! True countryside bliss!!!

Robin was excellent in communication and customer service. We met Jan who gave us a very warm welcome to The Shippon and North Wales.

We would definitely come back to stay and hopefully for much longer next time!

Another relaxing break!

  • 5 of 5

We're so pleased to have returned to The Shippon again for another relaxing break. As with our first visit, we found this lovely barn conversion was clean and tidy, with all the comforts you need to feel at home. The addition of a wood-burning stove was a nice touch and for those that are happy to cook for themselves, a new gas hob is another improvement. We enjoy the down-time, away from the daily grind and being surrounded by nature in such a peaceful setting. Jan and Robin do a great job of looking after this place - all credit deserved.

Perfect cosy retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day stay at the Shippon which was spotlessly clean and had everything you would need. It has a lovely outlook onto its own little private garden which is perfect if you take your dog. The barn is well placed, just far enough to to feel very rural but only 5 minutes to the main road which provides acces to all that North Wales has to offer. We visited the Snowdonia National Park along with Conwy and LLandudno on the coast all of which I would recommend. Betws y coed, a pretty little village nearby is also worth a visit. The owners, Robin and Jan are lovely and are at hand next door to help with anything you need. We would love to go back to do everything we couldn’t fit in this time!
