There is also a smaller courtyard where the guests can enjoy dining «al fresco» under the Santorini skies. The mansion has been beautifully renovated to provide all modern amenities( air-conditioning, satellite TV & DVD, iPod & iPod docking station) yet retaining the character and style of the original house.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The villa Sophia was absolutely charming, lovely interiors and exteriors, flowers everywhere. The service, from the pick-up at the airport to the initial tour of the house to the daily housekeeping, was excellent.

The village is central to almost everywhere but you can escape the hustle and bustle of Santorini to the delightful courthouse and the lovely pool.

Peaceful, Private, Perfect

  • 5 of 5

One enters the villa under a fragrant arch of tangled jasmine and bougainvillea.... The private courtyard and well restored home transport you to another time. The village is beautiful, low key and uncluttered. We enjoyed the simplicity of it all, but were grateful for the included rental car that enabled us to explore beaches, the famous sunset views and archaelogical sites. The Villa is managed with five star amenities such as a wonderful concierge named Jackie who arranges daily housekeeping, airport transfers, excursions and troubleshoots questions. Tips to consider before booking: most cars are manual so if you only drive automatic you may want to request in advance. Also, understand that the smaller bedroom does not have its own bathroom and guests staying in it must cross thru either the master bedroom or outdoor courtyard to access it and hot water is adequate but not unlimited. This is the trade off for living in the village of Megalachori! 5 star experience overall!!

Gorgeous home in perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at Mansion Sophia and cannot wait to come back and stay again. The little village of Megalochori was picture perfect and exactly what we were looking for in an off-the-beaten-path, authentic experience. There were several great restaurants just a stone's throw from the house and there was a great bakery just a short and scenic walk through the old village. Every person we met was incredibly friendly and made us feel welcome immediately. The house itself was fantastic, it had the charm and history to lend to its authenticity, but was very comfortable with all the conveniences of modern amenities like a washing machine, microwave and espresso maker. Thank you!!

We could not have been happier with our stay at Mansion Sophia. From the greeter at the airport to the luggage handler, to the concierge and the maid, everyone was friendly and helpful. The property is absolutely beautiful. The large living room is bright and inviting and the bedrooms on either side are roomy and elegantly furnished. The beds are comfortable and a cozy comforter was just the ticket for the cool nights. Even plush robes and slippers are provided.

With the rental car that was included as part of our stay, we explored many of the villages of Santorini and enjoyed them all but were more convinced than ever that none could top Megalohori. It is a traditional village with narrow streets (cars can travel on only a few), which adds to the charm. The villagers are friendly and we happened to be there the days leading up to Palm Sunday so we were able to participate in the ceremony that included decorating an enormous cross and watching with the whole village as the men used ropes and pulleys to raise it in the town square. Afterward everyone lined up for dinner provided by our favorite restaurant, located on the square. We also attended a service in the church and weren't allowed to leave without taking home bread and chocolate.

At day's end, after exploring other villages, we had drinks by the pool and walked to one of the many good restaurants. One night we made dinner in the nicely equipped kitchen and ate outside in one of the two lovely courtyards. The owner, Takis, even provides a complimentary bottle of wine for guests.

Staying at Mansion Sophia is everything you dream of when imagining visiting the iconic island of Santorini. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Lovely Mansion + Pool + Garden Dining Room

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a great, big, stone mansion for a group of friends/family in a quaint little town, look no further. There is tremendous indoor and outdoor space, the master bedroom and the rooftop view are simply gorgeous. The town is so cute, very easy to walk and it has 5 very yummy restaurants within a minute's walk. Stock up on wine and snacks at the local market, enjoy the skyline views and don't forget to meet Takis the owner...he's the man!

Beautiful villa in gorgeous surroundings!

  • 4 of 5

My three friends and I booked our October mini break in March and received lovely updates and comms from Takis, the general manager right up until we flew. He was also very accommodating when we wanted to add a fifth guest.

We were happy to see the airport transfers were included, and when we arrived we were met by the hire car company, however we were slightly taken aback to be greeted by two cars and one driver! Bear in mind you may have to drive immediately when you land and will need your driver's licence. (You will also definitely need the car - Santorini is not really walkable!)

Once we arrived in Megalochori (which is gorgeous) we were met by Jackie, who showed us around the village and villa and was absolutely fantastic.

The villa itself is as gorgeous as the pictures make it look. The pool area is particularly fabulous and there's access to the roof for late afternoon sunbathing and incredible views of the village.

The only negative points in the villa are the hot water (which we couldn't get working despite Jackie's instructions) and the kitchen was a little under equipped. However these pale in comparison to the rest of the experience.

Megalochori itself is beautiful, charming and quiet - everything you expect a village to be. It has some great restaurants and lovely shops.

Would heartily recommend!

Owner's Response: Dear Helen, thanks for much for the kind words! It was wonderful to have you as guest in Mansion Sophia! As you correctly noted we do include a car rental in the price which can be delivered directly at the port or airport. If private transfer is preferred, we can also arrange it as an extra service. Thank you for your feedback regarding the hot water. The villa has of course hot water but the boiler needs to be switched on at least 15 minutes before using. We apologize if it was not explained clearly to you. Thanks again and we look forward to see you again soon!

We stayed in Mansion Sophia with our 3 teenage daughters. I thought places like this only existed in the movies! The town of Megalochori is charming and Mansion Sophia is a hidden gem. From the moment we arrived, everything was effortless. We were greeted at the airport with our car and were driven directly to Megalochori where we met Jackie our concierge who introduced to the town and villa. We felt like we were in a dream as we walked up the ancient cobblestone road lined with white houses. Mansion Sophia is more beautiful in person than I had imagined with a spectacular courtyard, an inviting pool and gorgeous decor. The master bedroom was large and the smaller bedroom was very comfortable. Our youngest daughter slept on the pull out in the living room and was very happy. The only problem was there was one small bathroom for the 5 of us and as I mentioned, we have three teenage girls so you can imagine the situation. It was all good though because we were on vacation and were in no hurry. Everything Jackie and Takis recommended to us to make our holiday enjoyable was spot on - from the restaurants and activities we honestly could not have asked for a better holiday!

The peaceful little village of Megalochori is a much sought after and appreciated holiday base from which to enjoy the many attractions of Santorini. Only 6 km from the busy town of Fira, it is another world and an ideal holiday base for those who want to relax and enjoy the many attractions of Santorini from a different perspective.

Megalochori was inhabited by many feudal landlords of the island at the past. These merchants and landlords became wealthy exporting the unique Vinsanto wine, which the island still produces. Megalochori had a particularly strong link with Odessa in Russia and many of the church bells which still toll in the village today are from Russia.

This traditional settlement has retained its charm and authenticity despite the rapid touristic development of Santorini. Its traffic-free cobblestone streets , its Venetian bell towers and its lovely square with the chic restaurants make Megalochori a première destination for the concerning visitor of Santorini.
