A lovely building in a great location

  • 3 of 5

This is without question a lovely building - the bedrooms and upstairs bathroom facilities are of a high standard although the landings and stairwell are looking tired and in need of decoration.

However, as a self catering property it falls very short of what might be expected. The kitchen facilities are woefully inadequate to cater for 12 property - most of the pans do not have a lid and there are not enough utensils. There is insufficient crockery for 12 people - only 8 bowls, hardly any serving dishes. The dining table seats 12 at a push although there aren’t 12 dining chairs. This is a property that desperately needs a range cooker. The pleasant housekeeper lady did tell us that there were lots of places to eat out in the village but this is no excuse for inadequacies in what is advertised as a self catering holiday let.

In addition the standard of cleanliness in the kitchen and downstairs toilet was poor - multiple dusty cobwebs in both ( I have taken photos if you would like to see them).

There is extensive space outside but not enough seating for all.

Little break away for friends

  • 4 of 5

The property is huge. Bedrooms and bathrooms lovely. Rest of house I think has been kept to a style but needs TLC. Didn’t spoil holiday as central in Rothbury and great base for getting around the area.

Great holiday accommodation with some niggles

  • 4 of 5

Overall this house was a great choice. It is a grade 2 listed building with a lot of character and is I believe over 200 years old. I believe it used to be a bed and breakfast so all the rooms are well decorated and have really nice well appointed bathrooms and televisions in each room, however some of the remote controls were not working.

Some aspects of the house were a little jaded considering the price paid. The rear yard and access to it could do with some attention, as could the rear garden which is up steps that do not seem to belong to the house and there is no garden furniture or any plants or bushes etc just a lawn area.

The kitchen is big and practical with all you could need but in keeping with the price, I would have expected a better looking kitchen. The lighting is very poor and is non existent over the stove, which is right in the corner of the room. There is a big chimney breast that used to have a range. this is quite unsightly. That said we were able to cook quite well and nothing significantly detracted from our stay there.

To sum up we enjoyed our holiday and the accommodation had no serious issues just niggles, which I was not expecting for the price. So perhaps a little less than full value for money.

Great house for big get togethers

  • 4 of 5

11 of us shared this house. 4 children aged between 4 and 13. Great house with plenty of room. The kitchen could do with an Aga or Range to make it feel a bit cosier. Hardly used the TV room and spent more time chatting and playing games in the downstairs sitting room. Very well situated close to everything you need in town. Highly recommend the local butchers where we bought our Easter lamb from.

The perfect family get together property

  • 5 of 5

8adults, 5children, (between 14 & 3years old) we were delighted with this beautiful property, the adults each had their own room and bathroom (which were 1st class) there was a separate sitting room (den) which the children loved, as they had their own space. We had a very peaceful lounge, and it was lovely on the 1st night to all sit around the big table in the dining room, and thereafter in the kitchen. The family are already talking about going back, Cooker was ok, but if we were thinking of going again, could do with a bigger cooker, (suggestion). The property is in the Main Street of the village, but in a peaceful location, so handy for popping out to many places to eat, and the shops. Lovely walks also.

Look forward to returning to this lovely area and house.

Great house for a large party of friends and family

  • 5 of 5

It took a lot of searching to find a house with six bedrooms and bathrooms and we were delighted with our choice of Orchard House. Everyone was happy with their bedrooms, the kitchen was nice and big, as was the dining room. We got outside caterers in to do a birthday meal which went really well. Rothbury itself is a lovely town and well placed for visits to the coast, Hadrian's Wall and other local attractions. The many visitors meant finding an on-street parking place was sometimes a bit tricky but we managed, and it's probably a lot quieter out of the tourist season. Alison, the house manager, was very welcoming and helpful. We had a great time!

Owner's Response: Great that you had such a good time and everyone enjoyed their accommodation. The outside catering Company of Wilkins Fine Dining is indeed excellent and they are very good at working around our clients need. Hope that you will come and stay with us again Many thanks
