About David and Nancy Leonetti

We have been enjoying trips to Costa Rica for many years, before we finally made the move to purchase a vacation home of our own here. We purchased a condo in Herradura, and enjoyed that for 4 years, before making our move into the more "authentic," Costa Rica beachfront home that we own now. A close friend owned and enjoyed this home for many years with his family and friends, before selling it to us. We couldn't be happier with our home here. We live full time in the states, on the bay front, 2 blocks from a beautiful (manicured) white sandy beach, but there is something so special about the natural beauty of the beaches of Costa Rica. Were it not for our family and business obligations, we would love to live here full time.

David and Nancy Leonetti purchased this house in 2015

Why David and Nancy Leonetti chose Esterillos Oeste

Of course, we are partial to our beloved home, but we see this place as a unique tropical paradise, encompassing the best of the Costa Rican beach lifestyle. The spacious breezy rooms are unique, with beautiful hardwoods, antique tiles, tastefully decorated and the sound and views of the ocean within sight and earshot. The separate rancho/kitchen just enhances the experience every morning when we go outside, and open up the shutters to begin our day with some strong Costa Rican coffee and fresh fruit. The landscaping offers a lot of privacy on every side. Our beach frontage is lined with large and small beautiful coconut palms, fan palms, almond trees (the macaws love them), and various small plantings providing a privacy barrier, as well as shade if you'd like to get out of the sun. Our home is situated on the beach where low tide offers spectacular access to beautiful shells, a volcanic reef, with tide pools to explore and float around in. Great for young and old alike! The Esterillos mermaid is also very close to our home. The wildlife, of course is abundant here, birds, iguanas and an occasional monkey! Esterillos Oeste is a little surf town, with a couple of little grocery stores, with quite ALOT of stuff. There are also a handful of restaurants, all very good. Playa Hermosa and Jaco are close by, and offer shops, restaurants and great surfing. Los Suenos Marina and Golf Course is about 25-30 minutes away, and also has a lot to offer. We realize this type of living is not for everyone, so please do your research. I will honestly answer any questions you have about the house and the area. The town is a beautiful mix of Tico's (Costa Rican), surfers, ex-pats and tourists from all over the world.

What makes this house unique

Typical day for us: Wake up just before sunrise, open up all the windows and doors, and breath in the fresh morning ocean air. Throw on the swim suit, and and head out to the rancho. Unlock the rancho door, and lift open up the shutters..... more ocean breezes! Grind up some fresh coffee beans and make coffee. Grab a few mangoes from the trees, or the ground (if in season), or some fresh pineapple or papaya from the fridge, and make a plate of fresh cut fruit, or a smoothie in the blender. If you like juicing in the morning, grab some carrots, beet, apple and ginger and whip up some fresh juice. Make sure you take five minutes to stop and watch the sunrise. Sit on the chairs outside the room or in the rancho and enjoy your breakfast. After breakfast, grab some water, your iPod and head out for a walk on the beach. Head to the right, past the mermaid to a beautiful secluded area where the jungle meets the beach, or to the left toward the center of town, still pretty quiet...... you may see a life guard, some beach chairs/umbrellas being set up, a couple of people walking, a dog or two, and a local panga boat going out fishing. I've experienced horses roaming free, dozens of pelicans, macaws, and thousands of butterflies migrating overhead, on the beach. If you keep walking, in about 1.5 miles, you will come to a river mouth, and the beginning of Esterillos Centro, where you might see some surfers, and a huge sand bar, at low tide. While you're walking, leave your stuff on the beach, and take a quick dip to cool off. When you get back to the house, rinse off in the outdoor shower, and jump in the pool, for a few laps, or just a relaxing soak. It's only 8:00AM and you have the rest of the day to experience a new adventure: zip lines, horseback riding, river/crocodile tours, waterfall hike, etc. Get back in time for sunset! Certain times of the year you can watch sunrise/sunset from the same spot on the beach!

Little slice of heaven

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful vacation at this property! It's close to the beach and hidden away in a sweet small town neighborhood. The pool added to the fun as we were in it much more then the ocean. We vacationed with our adult son and his girlfriend so the bedroom situation with private baths was ideal. We used the middle room for watching TV and relaxation.

Went on Monkey tour - which was fantastic - but bring CASH & ask for Crazy Alex - you are NOT guaranteed to see monkeys! . The kitchen set up was more primitive then realized. The stove top was only cooking option as we could never get the oven to work. Had to wear a head lamp to prepare food at night as the lighting is limited.

The biggest reason this property did not get 5 stars from us was because there really is no option for outdoor furniture to lounge in. The table and chairs are not practical. The folding chairs were broken and we were told we could buy more. The wood bench on the porch is not comfy.

But, every day was an adventure with iguanas crossing the yard, horses on the beach, bird song and sightings everywhere and the plants on the property were spectacular. The restaurant options in town are wonderful. Found vegan options at the one in town across from Felipe's pizza restaurant.

There is a rooster who crows every morning at 4AM - and because of the way the bedrooms have open ventilation you can hear it. But, they stop within the hour and we always fell back to sleep. Waking up each day to the pool and tea in the quaint kitchen was fun and a great way to start the day.

Only a bar of soap is provided so be sure to bring all your own amenities. Also, no spices beyond salt and pepper offered. Local store offers marginal options, we had better luck at the Maxi Poli in Parrita (just 20 min down the road).

Felicia is available and was quick to help us with directions and looking at excursions. We felt taken care of.

The afternoons are quite hot and humid and we could not keep the master bedroom cooled down. We used the middle room for afternoon reprieve from the sun as it did stay much cooler. No where to hang clothes in units. Be prepared to work from a small dresser - but it turned out we didn't wear half of the clothes we brought as swimsuits were the outfit of the day. No dryer, everything is hang dried - which was kind of fun!

Bring a flashlight for walking on beach at night. Crabs everywhere. But you can walk the beach for ever!

A GREAT PLACE TO STAY!

  • 5 of 5

We had to find a place to stay at the last minute and we were so lucky this beautiful home was available. There weren't a lot of people on the beach so it felt private. The homeowners were extremely friendly and easy to work with and the caretakers of the property were close by and wonderful! Can't wait to come back!

Just returned from this nice property in Esterillos Oeste. The house and beach were beautiful. The pool was great to have. Caretakers Felicia and Felipe were always on call though not needed. I really like having the rancho kitchen out of the house. 2 days I walked down the beach and bought fresh fish from fishermen on the beach. The quiet friendly town is a nice mix of Costa Ricans and tourists. It has 2 good restaurants Almendras and Rancho Coral. On the owners (Nancy) recommendation we hired Manuel of Manuel’s tours for a birdwatching day in Carara and he was a wonderful guide who took pictures with a scope as we went capturing all the amazing things we saw. We did a day trip to Nauyaca Waterfalls for a strenuous hike with an amazing payoff.

Fantastic spot right on the ocean!!! Beach was beautiful, quiet and the waves were great for all

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this place was just as described!! We loved the beach and the sunsets/sunrises. It's a very quiet beach even thru the holidays! The waves were excellent for all ages and skill level! The town is small and very friendly! It was a bit of a challenge to cook for 6 people, the BBQ is open coal and we found it hard to get the heat up enough. We eneded up just using the fry pans and rice cooker. Also went down to Rancho Coral for lunch and supper! Great place and their pizza is amazing!!

Felicia and Felipe were absolutely amazing caretakers! They looked after everything we needed, even coming over early Christmas morning to help us with a small emergency! Can't say enough about this outstanding couple!

They also booked us for a tour and it was also incredible! Costacat catamaran to Tortuga Island was definitely a highlight of our trip and well worth the value!! The staff there was also excellent! We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone!

Thank you Nancy for sharing your beutuiful property with us!!! We loved every minute in Costa Rica!

Beautiful spot in a cute town

  • 5 of 5

Great little paradise right on the water! Love the open outdoor living. Beautiful beach great for walks, swimming and surfing. Hostess is very kind & accomodating. Read previous reviews about what is available and what isn't, just bring what you would want in terms of toiletries and pantry items. It's a great value, don't expect something super luxurious. Great location close to activities and not too far from San Jose. Town has a market and some great little restaurants. Definitely recommend!

Esterillos Oeste is located on the Pacific side, only 90 minutes from the airport. We are about 15 minutes away from Jaco, a tourist town where you can find many restaurants and places to go dancing at night then return to our tranquil, quiet village. We are approximately 45 minutes away from Manuel Antonio National Park. There are two marinas within 45 minutes from the village as well.

Esterillos is a beautiful beach with easy access to places you might want to see or activities you want to do such as zip line tours, horse back riding, ATV tours, hiking, and more.
