About the property

Cottage in Port William, Near Wigtown, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland - Beautiful And Peaceful Rural Location, Just Over A Mile From The Sea

Burnside is a charming detached holiday cottage, built in the 1850s and tucked away off a quiet country lane.

The cottage opens on to enclosed front and back gardens, where you can bbq lobster and crabs caught by local fishermen; or enjoy a drink while watching dozens of varieties of bird and wildlife.

The kitchen has all you’d expect - inc. dishwasher, microwave, electric hob and oven, washer/dryer. There’s also a log burner with free wood to keep it cosy in winter. Plus free wi-fi.

Three lovely bedrooms with garden views - a double, a single and a twin room -- with two zip and link beds that can convert into a kingsize double.

Galloway’s glorious coastline is on your doorstep with many sandy beaches and rocky coves to explore.

We’re a great base for for walking (Southern Upland Way, Galloway Forest Park), cycling (7 Stanes Kirroughtree), golf (St Medans) and fishing (river, loch or sea). Plus bird watching (35 species and counting seen in the garden by visitors).

It's just over a mile from the fishing village of Port William (shop, pub and restaurant).

All bed linen and towels are provided. Unfortunately, we're unable to take pets.

About Robert Walker

Our family has owned Burnside Cottage for more than 45 years. We spent our holidays there as children, and for many years it was used only by family and friends. A few years ago, our parents passed on the baton to us. It was time to fix the roof and refurbish the inside of the cottage. We have been letting the cottage since the improvements were completed in 2009. We still take our own holidays there, and a third generation of the Walker family now hike with us along the quiet country lanes, play poo-sticks in the stream, and are learning the names of the wildlife that continue to trek and fly through the garden. Charlie and Robert Walker.

Robert Walker purchased this cottage in 1960

Guestbook comments from the owner

1st comment: The cottage is brilliantly equipped - it has everything from children’s toys to golf clubs- and a very good list of local places to go.

2nd comment: Very pleasant, the layout of the cottage was convenient and easy to get around. Simply decorated and excellent accessories. The local art work around the house was a great advert for the artist. The garden was well kept and we were able to have a BBQ. Location is first class for peace and quiet but near lots of interesting villages.

3rd comment: Thoughtful touches, flowers, Christmas tree, furry hot water bottle. Vast amount of information including OS Maps.

4th comment: It was very secluded and the wildlife was fantastic, deer in the garden first thing, and owls of an evening and all sorts in between.

Great cottage in a peaceful location.

  • 5 of 5

Just got back from a fantastic week in this lovely cottage. Spacious and well equipped - it had everything we needed.

The deer came to visit in the garden, which was a treat. Lots of bird life. Plenty of space to sit out and lap up the sunshine. And best of all - so, so peaceful. If you want to get away from it all then this is the place. The loudest noise was the cows munching the grass in the nearby field.

Plenty to see in the area as well - a useful information pack was waiting for us along with lots of maps and leaflets. As the weather was so good we spent a lot of time around the coast - from the Mull of Galloway to the Isle of Whithorn, very pretty. There's also Galloway Forest Park to explore.

We really didn't want to leave. Would love to return one day.

Quiet, cosy, well equipped.

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was the best we've stayed at in terms of local information and maps, plus personal recommendations from the owners. It was very well maintained and equipped. Very quiet and lovely dark skies. We enjoyed the environment and saw a red squirrel right outside the door.

Comfortable house in a peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five spent two weeks at Burnside cottage in August. The house was spacious, well equipped and spotlessly clean. We loved the open plan design. Robert, the owner is responsive and helpful.

We would highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking to escape the crowds and stay in this beautiful part of Galloway.

Wonderful cottage, cosy and well equipped.

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully rustic from the outside, yet modern and smart inside. Great location to get away from it all, but with decent amenities a short trip away eg local artesian produce supplies, restaurants, cafes, pubs and beaches
