Spacious, contemporary villa with panoramic views over Roussillon plain. Private 9mx4m swimming pool with south-facing terrace. Spacious outside dining terrace with BBQ fireplace. Open-plan split-level living room with TV (French and free-to-air English channels), DVD player and wood-burning stove. WiFi broadband internet access. We can accommodate up to 10 people: 8 adults and 2 children. There are 4 bedrooms and a mezzanine area with 2 full-sized single beds for children's use. Table tennis. No passing traffic. Off-street parking. Direct access to open countryside for hiking and mountain biking. Located on the lower slopes of the Alberes mountains at the eastern end of the Pyrenees bordering the Mediterranean coast. 25km south of Perpignan, 15 minutes drive from the Mediterranean, 15 minutes drive from the Spanish border. Walking distance to award-winning vineyard. Nearby coastal resorts include Argeles with its long, golden beaches and Collioure with its beautiful medieval harbour.

About Susan

We are the Masters family and we live in the UK and visit Montesquieu-des-Alberes whenever we can, enjoying the year-round sunny weather and uplifting clarity of the light which attracted such famous artists as Picasso and Matisse to the area.

Why Susan chose Montesquieu-des-Albères

The location is brilliant. Montesquieu is a tranquil village, with an away-from-it-all feel and direct access to beautiful hillside walks and the mountain trails in the foothills of the Pyrenees, yet it offers very easy access to diverse areas of interest. For us the highlights are family-friendly beaches within 20 minutes’ drive; the beautiful fishing village of Collioure, the jewel of the Vermillion coast with its medieval castle, harbour and many restaurants, the Catalan culture which doesn’t exist elsewhere in France, the vibrant local markets offering fresh, local produce and easy day trips to Spain (the border is less than 15 minutes’ drive away).

What makes this villa unique

We never tire of the view over the Roussillon plain from the house or when enjoying a glass of award-winning wine from one of the village’s three vineyards on the front terrace as it goes dark and the twinkling lights can be seen for miles. Another pleasure is eating outside on the shaded terrace overlooking the swimming pool, which is conveniently located right next to the house. When we do want to stay indoors, the spacious 84m2 living room means there’s ample room for family and friends without ever feeling cramped and the addition of a wood-burning stove makes this a welcoming space year round.

Notes on accommodation: One double bedroom, one bathroom and a small mezzanine area with a single bed and full-size roll away single bed are arranged as a guest suite, accessed via its own staircase in the hall. A separate staircase in the hall leads down to the other double bedroom, the two twin bedrooms, the other bathroom, shower room and separate WC. Outside: With its own private 9m x 4m swimming pool (1m to 2m deep), the villa is located on a sloping 2750m2 plot. The large dining terrace/summer kitchen overlooking the swimming pool provides welcome shade in the heat of the day. The front terrace overlooking the Roussillon plain is also equipped with table and chairs; it's a favourite spot for dinner as the sun goes down and the lights start to twinkle across the plain. Utility Room: Washing machine, additional fridge/freezer, iron, ironing board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen available for hire locally on request. Other: Entrance hallway with access to front terrace overlooking Roussillon plain.

Fantastic family holiday - amazing property, perfect pool, great location - definitely going back!

We had a fantastic 2 week holiday in this beautiful, stylish property in a lovely part of France, with our 4 children aged 9 - 19 and two grandparents. The villa is spacious, clean and very well equipped. Very comfortable living areas inside and an amazing pool and outdoor seating areas. Evening meals on the front terrace overlooking the amazing view and enjoying the spectacular sunsets - excellent BBQ. On the one cooler evening we enjoyed an indoor meal at the long table in the open plan dining room. Breakfasts in the perfect seating area overlooking the pool. Our children enjoyed exploring the area behind the house that stretched up the hill and into the trees. They also enjoyed the table tennis table in the garage.

We didn't go out much as we made the most of the pool (great size - a shame the pool lights weren't working for evening swims) and the time to rest, and enjoyed cooking meals in the well equipped kitchen. We did a day trip to Barcelona (2 hr drive) which was perfect. It was a shame the nearest place to shop meant getting in the car, but it was easy and simple. The village is quiet with not much going on but we did discover a fantastic little bar/cafe called La Clau d'el Sol with a beautiful garden for enjoying a beer or espresso. They do simple meals and you can pick up fresh baguette in the morning if you get there in time.

The only downsides of the holiday for us were how hot the bedrooms were at night (plenty of fans available but no air con) and the mosquitoes. We tried everything to deter them -windows shut, spray, oil diffusers but we were covered in bites and kept awake at night. Not sure how the locals deal with it – maybe mosquito screens at the windows would help?

The other thing to be aware of is accessibility for elderly people or toddlers - lots of steps and different levels in the house and beautiful stone tiles throughout - very stylish but quite difficult for my mother with limited mobility. I was afraid of her falling and she needed to be helped with the level changes as they didn't all have handrails. The pool was not accessible for her due to the step ladder and the showers were all VERY slippery – take a rubber slip mat if you have small children as we couldn’t find one locally! Also, if you are over 6 ft, be aware that the bed in the master bedroom is short.

Overall, we had an amazing holiday in a beautiful property in a fantastic location – we would LOVE to go back again! We highly recommend this property.

Wonderful house, great views, fabulous pool!

We have stayed in this area of France for many years and this was undoubtedly the best house we have rented. The house is clean and well maintained and the local manager was very quick to respond when we had a problem with hot water. The views from the front terrace over the Canigou and plains are spectacular. We cannot recommend it highly enough.

The nearest coastal resort - 15 minutes away by car- is Argeles with its long sandy beaches and palm-fringed promenade. Further south the beaches are more pebbly with good opportunities for sailing, snorkeling and fishing.


Airport drive time: Perpignan 30 mins; Gerona 50 mins; Beziers 1hr 20; Carcassonne 1hr 20; Montpellier 1hr 40; Barcelona 2hrs; Nimes 2hrs; Toulouse 2hrs. Car essential.
