Brantrake cottage is a grade II listed, four star rated, 17th century farmhouse situated in a secluded and peaceful location within the Eskdale valley. The cottage comprises 3 double bedrooms and is set back from the nearest road. The cottage has retained many of its original features including beamed ceilings and slate floor combined with up to date amenities including washing machine dryer, heating, wood burning stove, dishwasher and wifi. There is a private walled garden to the front and sheltered south facing patio and garden to the rear and private parking for several cars.

We purchased Brantrake cottage 5 years ago in the beautiful Eskdale valley for the peaceful setting, lovely scenery and wide range of fell and valley walks.

Why peter altounyan chose Eskdale

Its a quiet area with dramatic scenery and away from the crowds. There is a strong community in the area. The setting for the cottage with fells behind and views across to Muncaster Fell and beyond is very beautiful as are the sunsets. The local area also benefits from a micro climate where the sun shines more often than further inland.

What makes this cottage unique

There are numerous walks accessible direct from the cottage ranging from high mountains to low level river walks. Scafell is close by and a short drive.

7/14 Our 4th visit though sadly only for 1 week and not our usual 2. Weather interesting. Can recommend George IV inn for good food. hope to return next year.

1/11/13 we had great fun climbing the mountain/hill behind the cottage -hard work but worth it. Great area, great house wish we could stay longer. Will come back as soon as possible.

Notes on accommodation: One well behaved dog by arrangement. There is a private walled garden and south facing patio to the rear including a large private parking area and a private garden and driveway at the front. Utility Room: The washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer are located in the adjacent barn which can also be used for storing bicycles, canoes and drying clothes. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property is cleaned prior to each stay and linen is included. Towels are not included. Unlimited wood is provided for the wood burning stove and wifi is free. Other: The adjacent barn can be locked and used for storing outdoor equipment such as canoes and bicycles

The cottage was in a perfect location for a relaxing vacation.

The cottage was well appointed, clean and tidy having everything we needed for a great stay. The beds were very comfortable.

The only problem was the excessively creaky floor upstairs, it was difficult to get around in the early hours without waking everyone else in the house! However, we would stay there again if we weren’t taking any additional family/friends with us as we really enjoyed exploring that side of the Lakes.

A few of miles away there’s a couple of pubs serving good food, our preference would be The Boot, well worth a try.

Great Location, beautiful setting

Perfect for walking, river swimming and local pubs without getting back in your car. The cottage is cozy with a great garden - a real suntrap.

Wonderful week in an idyllic setting

Had an amazing week at Brantrake Cottage with friends. The weather wasn't great but with such a lovely cottage in such a beautiful setting this didn't matter one bit! Brantrake is extremely well equipped with a perfect layout for sociable cooking, evening meals (and games of Carcassone and Catan!) round the big dining room table, and cosy fireside chats. Beds are sooooo comfortable too, and both larger bedrooms enjoy front and back views. Although we couldn't spend too much time in the garden, the time we did spend there was sheer relaxation, and a million miles away from our busy urban lives. We also enjoyed (pushchair suitable) walks to Boot (thoroughly recommend The Boot Inn) and Muncaster Castle (stunning grounds), and the boys climbed Scafell while us girls and tots had fun on La'al Ratty (wave to Paddington at Irton station). All in all, we had a great time. Having stayed in many Lake District cottages over the years, I can say that Brantrake is undoubtedly 5*.

Special place

Brantrake is perfectly suited for walking being a stone's throw from Eskdale. It has walks to suit all ages and abilities and you can walk straight from the door. It's secluded with it's own private garden and long driveway. It has all the amenities you could need including a wood burner and wifi which the teenagers were impressed with! Pubs within a stone's throw too. Highly recommend it and we would come back again like a shot. Perfect.

Gorgeous cottage

The photos don't do this property justice. Its a gorgeous cottage, set in a stunning location. From the wood burning stove, to the lovely sitting-room, cosy bedrooms with crisp cotton sheets, and beautiful garden this is a great bolt-hole. Eskdale is also a must to stay in, peaceful location, great pubs nearby, with the iconic Buttermere and Wasdale within driving distance. The owners were also incredibly helpful providing handy tips on places to go nearby, and great inside knowledge on local walks.

use of a car is recommended. The nearest railway station is Ravenglass approximately 3 miles away or eskdale green on the eskdale to ravenglass steam railway just half a mile away


Eskdale Green is approximately 1 mile away and has a village shop with newspapers and day to day provisions.

Broughton in Furness is approximately 20 minutes drive and has a range of interesting shops including post office, butcher, bakers/cafe, restaurant, greengrocer/delicatessen, outdoor clothing and petrol station.

Gosforth is some 15 minutes drive also has a wide range of shops and places to eat

The cottage is situated beneath Birker fell and within the Eskdale valley and there are many walks and climbs directly from the property or a short drive away.

Places of interest include Ravenglass-Eskdale railway, Muncaster Castle, coastal wildlife sanctuaries, Hardknott fort, numerous mountains lakes and tarns including Scafell and Wastwater.

There are 5 pubs all of which serve food within 3 miles the nearest being half a mile away.
