About the property

Stunning Rural Property Only 5 Mins From Beach. Comfortable Beds and Air-Conditioning Throughout. Outdoor Cooking Terrace by Pool

Casa Modesta is unique. Winter and summer, guests will find they should never have to compromise on the levels of comfort they enjoy at home. From the joy of cooking in the fabulously well-appointed kitchen to the bliss of rejuvenating sleep afforded by the luxurious beds, everything has been carefully planned and designed to make this a genuinely five star experience. Casa Modesta is as its name suggests. It presents itself as a simple cottage which, although recently rebuilt, retains much of its original character. Modesty, however usually belies a beautiful secret waiting to be discovered and our property is no exception to the rule. Walking through the front door of Casa Modesta is like opening a jewel box. The natural neutral tones of the building's facade do not prepare you for the richness of colour and texture inside. Outside, guests can take a walk through rows of almond trees or sit by the swimming pool and watch the sunset turn the vineyards orange and purple.

About Vanessa

We live in Kent and have 3 children aged between 27 and 13. Steve, my husband, has been visiting Sicily for over 20 years for his work importing tomatoes for UK supermarkets and introduced me to this unique and very beautiful area in 2005. The area is one of the few remaining in the Mediterranean that still offers an authentic experience of rural life, almost unchanged for hundreds of years. Life in this corner of Sicily is still very much connected to the produce of the land and the sea.

Vanessa purchased this house in 2007

Why Vanessa chose Noto

The house and its five acres of almonds and olive trees offers complete tranquillity and seclusion and yet is less than 10 minutes drive to the enchanting fishing village of Marzamemi, several stunning beaches and a wide range of shops and restaurants. The house is also a great base from which to explore the architectural and historical gems of southeast Sicily.

What makes this house unique

When we started out on this venture we had some clear aims. Our first priority was to develop a high-end rental property with a secondary upside of somewhere the family could spend their holidays. Our second aim was to provide for our guests the same level of comfort and style as we find in our favourite hotels (this is not something we could readily find in rental properties in the Mediterranean). Top quality bedding and furnishings create the luxury finish inside the house and outside the glass mosaic deck level pool with stone terraces complete the five star experience. There are stunning views of vineyards and rolling farmland in every direction. Off season underfloor heating means the house is always warm and cosy and there is never a shortage of hot water for showers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks so much for a fabulous week in your wonderful and well equipped house. Despite the very hot high season weather (36 every day) we have managed to drag ourselves away from the lovely pool and cosy house for some eating and adventures. The highlight was definitely the Scala Restaurant you recommended in Portopalo - amazing fresh raw and cooked seafood + all for €60 for the 4 of us! We also enjoyed jaunts to Noto, Syracusa and more marvellous eating in Marzamemi. We loved the shade, facilities and clear waters at Agua Beach, which is where we are going now for our last swim. Then we need to eat up our remaining food and drink up the last of our Vini Rudini wine.

A winter heating supplement of £50 applies between the end of October and March. Outside: Gorgeous deck level swimming pool, mosaic tiled and with wide Roman style steps for easy access. Wide stone terraces with large awning providing plenty of shade. Comfortable sunbeds. Terrace with Weber barbecue and fantastic views over surrounding countryside. Extensive lawns, beautiful ancient olive trees and a specimen garden stocked with tropical plants and fruit trees. Utility Room: Utility area with washing machine, large sink, ironing board and iron. Outside is a large stone worktop with oversized sink and h/c running water. And a washing line with a view! Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Included are: bed linen bath towels and Turkish towels for the pool area. Two week stays have mid weekend change. Extras available: Mid week or daily linen/towel change, daily maid service, pool & beach towels (turkish style). Other: The large mezzanine area offers stunning views of vineyards and countryside from a panoramic window. We had a wonderful 2 weeks here. Beautiful house, pool and gardens.

  • 4 of 5

The house if beautifully designed. We are a family of 5 and the house worked well for us. The kitchen/living area is a bit small for 5 but to be honest it didn’t really matter as we spent the whole time outside. The pool area and gardens are stunning so it was difficult to ever leave but when we did we really enjoyed visiting local towns, beaches and restaurants. Would highly recommend it.

A lovely place to relax and unwind

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Casa Modesta. Having arrived late at night in the dark, it was heavenly waking to see the beautiful pool and gardens in the daylight. The property has everything you need for a comfortable stay including a barbecue and sonos speaker! Vanessa provided really detailed information and responded quickly to any queries - it is obvious she loves the place and wants you to have a really good stay, Thank you, we were sad to leave.

An oasis in a great area of Sicily

  • 5 of 5

The four of us enjoyed our stay at Casa Modesta immensely. The house is perfectly set up for an easy vacation, and the gardens and pool were incredible. Waking up to the scent of lavender outside (in full bloom in the middle of May) was a treat. The Owners are responsive and helpful, and we would recommend this house and location for others looking to explore this corner of Sicily. We took several day trips - Modica, Noto, Siracusa - and the Valley of the Temples - but were always glad to return, jump in pool, and have an aperitif on the upper terrace. The best way to enjoy sunset with views towards the sublime landscapes surrounding the house.

A smartly decorated property in rural southern Sicily

  • 4 of 5

A great location overlooking 360 degrees of fruit trees and almond groves. Beautiful swimming pool and gardens around the house. Easy drive to get provisions in Pachino. Great restaurants at Marzamemi. Vindicari Nature Reserve is just down the road. We had a great time.

Just as we'd imagined!

  • 5 of 5

Location, location, location! Casa Modesta is away from the crowds, quiet, beautiful. The house is attractively decorated, the pool is stunning, and the grounds are like a botanical garden. We did very lite cooking, but equipment was available to do serious food prep if we’d wished. We appreciated the thoughtful touches: complimentary snacks, supper waiting in the fridge, supplies to tide over until shopping could be accomplished, plenty of hangers, laundry basket, lots of clothes pins, towels for the pool, books, Sonos, maps, dining recommendations. Best of all, the portable wi-fi device helped us navigate both by car and by foot, Syracusa, Modica, Noto, and all the smaller villages. Vanessa and her family clearly want their guests to be comfortable and to appreciate the area as they so obviously do.

Perfect week

  • 5 of 5

Casa Modesta is the first place we have ever stayed where I wouldn't change a thing. The Villa was the perfect size for 4 adults and our 2 and a half year old.

The villa itself isn't the biggest you will come across but the space had been utilised perfectly. The main bedroom is a delight to wake up in, the kitchen/living room area is all that you could hope for in a holiday villa. The grounds and pool area are stunning! Our daughter had us up at 7am every day and straight into the pool. We had our lunches and dinners by the poolside with a great view of the neighbours farm.

Vanessa was the best host we have ever had. Always available and always had the answers!

I could go on and on about our time at Casa Modesta. In fact we only ended up eating two meals out as we just wished we were back there.

I'm certainly not one to revisit hotels/villas but would happily spend another week here.

Thanks so much for an amazing holiday.

Tom, Lucy & Lilija.

Casa Modesta is a few minutes drive from the SP19 Pachino to Noto road. It is 2.5 km from a beautiful beach and there are several more within 5km. The beaches in this area range from quiet coves surrounded by rocky headlands where turtles come to lay their eggs at night, to the busy, sophisticated private beach club Agua Beach where you can be massaged on your super-comfortable sun lounger or head to the chill-out area to savour an ice cold drink. All are perfect for children as they are gently sloping.
