About Lynda and John Burke

We bought this villa to make it into a wonderful family home which we use for about half the year with our children and grandchildren. We chose this unique location because it feels like living in a rural idyll with no traffic or aircraft noise: just the sweeping landscape of valley, sea and the splendour of the ‘baous’ behind us. However, we are only a few moments away from the bustle of Vence and we have the enormous benefit of Nice airport so close that we can get here as often as possible! For family reasons we now stay here mainly outside the summer months so we like to let others enjoy it as much as we do!

Lynda and John Burke purchased this villa in 2006

Why Lynda and John Burke chose Vence

When the time came for us to buy our own villa in the south of France we always knew that it would be in Vence. We had always loved Vence and the surrounding area because it has such a wonderful climate and is so close to all the important places in the region but also has its own rural and urban identity away from the summer crowds and congestion elsewhere. As well as the medieval city with its lively markets, galleries, cafés and restaurants the whole ‘Vençois’ area is steeped in history from ancient times to the modern period when it became famous as the ‘City of Arts’. The airport and railway stations are close by and the delightful markets and small shops are complemented by modern supermarkets and even a shopping mall a short drive away. We really have the best of both worlds!

What makes this villa unique

Even in January it is warm and sunny, the garden is full of life and the house is calm and peaceful. It always amuses us when visitors come for the first time: whether it is the postman or an old friend coming to stay, everyone will break off from their greetings, turn to face the sea and, for a moment, remain silent except for an involuntary “Wow!” On a clear day we can see Corsica. Some days we take our bikes to the coast or take the hardly-known footpath at the end of our garden and walk undisturbed into the hills towards the source of our local river with amazing waterfalls and fish swimming upstream – even salmon! Then back for a dip in the pool and lunch on the terrace with a glass of rosé – heaven! But in five minutes we can be in town buying our bread and oysters …

Beautiful Villa with Stunning Views

  • 5 of 5

Celebrated my 60th in Vence and could not have asked for a better experience. Beautiful home, well maintained and spotless. Sparkling clean pool. All our needs were met. John and Lynda were amazing hosts, and welcomed you into their gorgeous home. They had created a very detailed binder explaining how to operate ever gadget in the house, plus had very useful information on restaurants and the surrounding villages.

We spent early mornings and most of our evenings on the top terrace taking in the beautiful view of the mountain behind us or Vence, St Paul de Vence and the ocean. Very quiet and peaceful which is what we wanted.

I would not hesitate to recommend this home, Thanks John and Lynda.

Owner's Response: What a nice review! It is great having guests like Lyn and her family who appreciate the efforts we make to provide not just a villa but a comprehensive holiday service. Attention to detail and local knowledge are what makes the difference. Lyn and her family would be welcome to come back at any time in the future!

A week in the french sun

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful position just outside Vence. Lovely owners who were most helpful answering our many questions both before and when we arrived. ( EG organising tennis for us at the local club) Good villa but lacked certain things ( needs a bigger barbecue, a modern music system , only some bedrooms had air conditioning, given it sleeps 8 the kitchen is small with not a very big fridge) but we had a very happy week nonetheless.

Owner's Response: We are always pleased to receive compliments as well as constructive criticism so thanks to Charlotte, for bringing her observations to our attention. At Villa Le Cougnet we make a point of inviting guests to let us know if they have any difficulty using equipment so that any problems can be resolved immediately (and preferably before submitting a review). This is a welcome opportunity to draw attention to the detailed list of facilities and equipment at Villa Le Cougnet, accurately described on our Owners Direct website listing. We specified the latest Samsung air-conditioning and Dyson Cool Tower systems to provide the best, and quietest, equipment for each bedroom. We also provide clear instructions on how to use the Sony Smart TV (including all UK and French channels, Netflix, Amazon, BBC iPlayer etc) and the blue-tooth enabled Denon music system which lets guests play their own favourite sounds wirelessly. We also offer technical help if guests have difficulty using any of this equipment and emphasise the importance of not changing technical settings which can cause malfunctions. As this is the first and only 4-star review (all others are 5-star!) we should point out that Villa Le Cougnet was built in the French Provençal style and the kitchen is relatively spacious. In particular the fridge (a full size 6' high Bosch larder-fridge), the separate Bosch freezer and the De Dietrich oven and microwave are all considered large in France, and certainly more than adequate for a holiday stay. Most of our guests, including those from the US with vast kitchens at home, have found it very well-equipped and ideal for family holidays. Lynda and John

A holiday beyond expectations

  • 5 of 5

We all had the best holiday we have ever had. Villa le Cougnet is beautiful, the view is breathtaking, but best of all is the attention to detail.

Everywhere there are hidden delights and we all appreciated the artwork on the walls. Everyone enjoyed the long leisurely evening meals sat on the terrace enjoying the view.

The children were catered for with well made play equipment and we couldn't get them out of the well maintained safety alarmed pool.

Thank you both for allowing us to share your home for the week, it really is a wonderful place. Oh, and did I mention the pétanque tournaments held at dusk with the lights of Nice glittering below us!

Owner's Response: A very welcome review by Geri, thank you, and a reminder about our facilities for children. Our own children and grandchildren are regular guests so we have to keep the play equipment for the pool and the garden in perfect working order (as well as some books and DVDs for the little ones' rest-time). In addition our 'What To Do' booklet includes a guide to our favourite children's activities in the area. Lynda and John

A perfect villa!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday in villa le Cougnet which is a beautiful, spacious, spotlessly clean and very well equipped villa. It is also cosy and felt like home right from the moment we stepped inside - the living room, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms are all just lovely! The outside area is also fabulous and there are lots of seating areas to choose from though we spent most of our time at the large table outside the kitchen or by the pool! We appreciated the food, wine and toiletries that were provided on our arrival and found John and Linda really helpful and instantly responsive if anything was required. This was one of the best holidays we have ever had - thank you!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Patricia, for highlighting something we know that our guests value highly: a quick response to any question or request. Holidays are far too short to waste so we try to make sure that everything our guests need is provided without fuss. Regular guests know that we will be available immediately to help with any queries or advice. We put a lot of effort into making sure our guests can enjoy a wonderful, calm, very private holiday villa and we are proud that this is our tenth 5* review. Lynda and John

Le Cougnet is a very special place.

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from two wonderful weeks at this beautiful villa and it was everything we had hoped for and more. We were three generations of the same family: six adults, a two year old and an eight week old baby and Villa Le Cougnet was perfect for every one of us. John and Lynda’s thoughtful provision of a cot and crib for the two youngest members of our party made sleeping arrangements trouble-free and the box of age appropriate toys was a treasure chest of playing opportunities. The swing and slide were also put to good use, as were the inflatables for the pool – mostly by the adults who wholeheartedly embraced the challenge of the daily water fight tournament.

The villa itself is in a secluded location but close to Vence and other pretty towns with their wide choice of restaurants and shops, large and small. The easy availability of high quality food made self-catering really easy – the cheese counter at LeClerc was explored to the full and yet we didn’t even come close to trying all it had to offer. We tried several of the restaurants recommended in the helpful guide provided at the villa and all were excellent.

There can be nowhere better to enjoy your morning croissants and coffee than from the dining table on the upper terrace – the views are stunning. This is such an exquisite villa and we ended our holiday feeling relaxed, revitalised and privileged to have spent time in this truly beautiful part of the world.

Owner's Response: Steve has written a beautiful review (thank you!) and describes Villa Le Cougnet and the facilities in Vence perfectly. We listen hard to what our guests say and we appreciate all their suggestions and comments. Each year we try to introduce small improvements like welcome packs of drinks and toiletries, and useful guidebooks (including our own) to make a stay at Villa Le Cougnet a little bit more special than most other holiday villas. It works because we get great guests like Steve and his family! Lynda and John

Further Details:

The local history of Vence is fascinating, with its origins in the pre Gallo-Roman times and you will be surprised to find authentic Roman stone tablets outside the Cathedral (the smallest in France!) alongside the Provençal squares and buildings. By contrast, on the inside is a mosaic mural by Marc Chagall.

There are twice-weekly markets in Vence, lots of small local shops and hairdressers, and modern supermarkets selling everything. You can fill water bottles from the fresh spring water that runs constantly from public taps around the town.

You will need a car to make the most of the area as we are 370m above sea-level (hence the views!) with some steep hills towards the mountains. If you enjoy driving through a spectacular landscape you should not miss the roads up to and around Le Col de Vence, where new car models are frequently seen being filmed against its stunning backdrop.

WALKING / HIKING: A footpath next to the villa leads directly to the hills and mountains above Vence where you will find various trails and some amazing waterfalls. There are many other walking routes close by, including the famous and mysterious Col de Vence.

ARTS: The Matisse Chapel is a short walk from the villa and there is plenty to inspire the art lover in Vence, the ‘City of Arts’, with the Château de Villeneuve (contemporary art museum) in the centre and many local artists showing their work in their studios. The Maeght Foundation at St Paul de Vence has an extensive, world-famous collection featuring Miro and Giacometti. MAMAC is the main contemporary art museum of Nice and there are museums dedicated to Picasso at Antibes and Vallauris, to Matisse and Chagall in Nice, Leger in Biot, Bonnard in Le Cannet and Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer, all less than an hour away.

MUSIC: There are jazz clubs in Vence and various concerts in the town and surrounding area. In the summer, Vence hosts the hugely popular ‘Nuits du Sud’ concerts with performers from all over the world.
