About david smith

Owning a lakeland home has been our dream for many years since our first holiday together and then gettiing married in the lakes. We searched for years before finding Ees Wyke and falling in love - it is our dream home and in such a beautiful village.

For us Ees Wyke has everything we dreamed of and is a wonderful family home for our 3 kids. We all love it, the pace of life and the great local walks.

Its location is perfect -right in the centre of the lakes - close to the picturesque village of Hawkshead and only five miles from Ambleside and Langdale. The cottage is in a great spot with great views over Esthwaite and the Langdales.

We are delighted to be able to share Ees Wyke Cottage with others people until such time as we can live there ourselves.

Why david smith chose Ambleside

We just loved it!

It's a beautiful traditional Lakeland cottage in a great location. It has that charming farmhouse feel with some great period features whilst having all the modern facilities we wanted.

The cottage is in a private, beautiful and quiet spot within the most lovely Lakeland village. The cottage garden is a delight with superb lake views. It is the perfect place to relax & get away from it all whilst being close to the tourist attractions & local facilities.

All the bedrooms have great views of Esthwaite and the Langdale Pikes. It has fantastic local walks and a fabulous local pub - the National Trusts' Tower Bank Arms - with good food, real ales and with all that rustic lakeland charm that is so very warm, cosy and friendly.

What makes this cottage unique

We particularly enjoy the quietness and romance of the cottage and its location. The cottage is light and airey with a lot of space for a traditional lakeland cottage. The kitchen/diner is well equipped and a perfect family room - whilst the lounge is spacious but still gets very cosy on those cold evenings. Having 2 bathrooms is a real advantage.

The local walks are exhilerating without having to be too strenuous - the easy to reach picturesque views have to be seen to be believed.

We have already met lots of friends in the village and the Tower Bank Arms still has that truly local feeling to it, as well as catering for people holidaying. With no TV or juke box all you can do is talk and get to know folk - and you do talk!

It is a place to truly relax and get away from it all.

A Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent week in this property. It was clean, comfortable and well equipped with plenty room for six adults and a dog. The location is very good for getting about by car and we enjoyed walking in the vicinity of the cottage. The village is quiet but with several places to eat out nearby. Lovely views from the property and we enjoyed the pleasant garden and sitting out area. The owners were very helpful, especially in returning an item to us that we had accidentally left at the property.

Cute and well appointed

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the cottage. It is large enough with 3 bedrooms and everything works just fine. The best recommendation I can make is that we would come back, no hesitation.

Lovely countryside around, plenty of walks and close to Lake District areas of interest.

Cosy, beautiful cottage with plenty of room for 6 people to stay

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is in probably one of the most beautiful parts of the world. It is well equipped and the bedrooms are brilliant with the king size beds. It was quiet and in a fabulous location. We all had a wonderful break. When we arrived there was snow so it was great to see the landscape with the snow. The walking in the area is second to none and Ambleside and Keswick are a must. We also took a trip to Buttermere and drove through the Slate Mine area, all I can say is WOW. Thank you so much for a wonderful holiday and we will most certainly look to returning specifically to this cottage.

Homely and a wonderful location

  • 4 of 5

We have stayed in Near Sawrey for many years, this was our first stay at Ees Wyke Cottage over all a very pleasant stay it was a great location within walking distance of Tower Bank Arms which is a great pub great locals and one of the best bar managers.

The owners of the property David and Sharon where very helpful even when I locked my self out. As for the property itself, it was very homely after the heating had been on, the only negative was that the property itself is a little tired and in need of a little attention. This did not effect our stay we had a wonderful time.

Coast/Beach:

A range of coastal resorts and beaches are within a short driving distance.

The traditional Victorian resort of Grange Over Sands is only 10 miles away taking the road to the south along Lake Windermere and then taking a left at Newby Bridge along the A590 following the signs to Grange.

Or take a right along the A590 to the Barrow Peninsula - approx 12 miles.

Alternativey turn off the A590 Barrow road for the West Cumbrian coast around Millom & Ravenglass - only 15 miles.

Further Details:

Near Sawrey was home to Beatrix Potter and still attracts many visitors to her home at Hill Top which is open to the public and 2 minutes walk from Ees Wyke.

From Ees Wyke there are many great walks and not all of them have to be overly strenous. A great local walk (1 hour) is around Moss Eccles Tarn finishing off with a warming drink at the Tower Bank Arms - it is a delight with excellent food and beer. For a longer (2.5 hour) walk to Claiffe Heights finishing at the neighbouring Cuckoo Brow Inn at Far Sawrey for lunch.

Good food is also available from the Sawrey House Hotel in the village.

Glorious Hawkshead village is just 1.5 miles away & has a range of museums (Wordsworth's Grammar School & Beatrix Potter), shops (incl post office, pharmacy and grocery), pubs and restuarants. The best food is probably at the Queens Head.

Close by at Barngates is the celebrated gastro-pub and brewery, The Drunken Duck. Just a minutes drive away from Tarn Hows - perhaps the most beautiful and photographed spot in the Lake District. Tarn Hows is a must visit spot and it only takes an hour to walk around.

Ambleside offers many more choices of shops (especially outdoor pursuits), cosmopolitan restuarants and local pubs.

The hustle and bustle of Bowness and Windermere towns are just a short ferry trip away across Lake Windermere (1.5 miles). Bowness is the start of many boat trips around the lake & home to the Beatrix Potter museum.

Other notable local attractions include:

Walking - Langdale Pikes (5 miles)

Art, sculptures and "Go Ape" climbing - Grizedale Forest (2 miles)

Aquarium and steam railway - Lakeside (6 miles)

Wordsworth's homes and the walkers village of Grasmere (7 miles)

South Lakes Zoo - Dalston (12 miles)

Ulverston and Laurel & Hardy Museum (10 miles)

Local Spa's - Swan Inn at Newby Bridge (7 miles)

Or you can just chill and enjoy the peace and quiet of Ees Wyke.
