Farmhouse in A Cañiza, Pontevedra, Spain - Beautiful Hillside Location With Stunning Views, Gardens And Private Pool.

Casa Portela is a stone farmhouse situated on an old Royal Way overlooking the Miño valley and Portuguese mountains. From the walled garden, a bridge leads to the terraced finca and pool. Tucked away above a pretty river valley the house lies in an idyllic spot, the perfect place to get away from it all and relax in the sun. The land is managed organically and covered in fruit, nut and other native trees. Seasonal fruit is available year round including cherries, peaches, grapes, oranges and raspberries. Plenty of garden furniture is provided along with croquet/badminton sets and boules. The saltwater pool (9m x 4.5m) is for sole use of guests.

The house has a large well equipped kitchen and dining room. It has been restored rustically, exposing the granite stone and old beams and has a traditional Galician fireplace. The kitchen leads outside to the walled garden where there is a dining area and BBQ. The living room has fantastic views down the valley. It´s a cosy place with comfy chairs and sofa, lots of books, games and satellite T.V. All three spacious bedrooms have en-suite bathroom and shower.

Staying at Casa A Portela gives you the opportunity to explore a part of Spain and Portugal almost untouched by tourism... Discover historic spa towns, try rafting on the river Miño, go horse-riding in A Caniza or check out the beautiful beaches on the Rias Baixas coast. Closer to home, a signed walk from the house leads you through breathtaking countryside, crossing back and forth over the river through ancient cork oak woodland, past stone water mills, pretty hamlets and up into hills where wild horses roam. Or maybe a glass of local Albariño or Ribeiro wine by the pool sounds more appealing... You could even go for a 10 min stroll to a local vineyard where they will show you around and you can sample their wine, they also offer Spanish classes in the winery.

Beautiful Galician Home

We had a wonderful time at this beautiful house and Paul was an excellent host. We really enjoyed the pool with views of the hills of Portugal. An idyllic country setting with nearby villages to explore, it was also a great base to travel to the Sil River valley, Ourense, and the coast!

Beautiful old farmhouse with idyllic views

We all had a gorgeous time, the photographs don't lie, the house is in a gorgeous position, with the most amazing pool. Its lovely and rustic and a wonderful spot to explore Galicia which is very untouched by tourism. Great for families who want to get away from it all plus those that want to explore the region. Thanks for everything Paul, we hope to come back one day.

The perfect holiday location

Casa Portela is the perfect location for a relaxing holiday. The house is spacious, comfortable and well equipped. The sun shone every day but we were able to enjoy meals in the garden in the shade as well as enjoying the refreshing pool looking over towards the mountains and Portugal in the distance. We were given a really warm welcome from Paul and his family. The house, although off the beaten track, is in an excellent location for visits to local villages and towns although you will need a car. We enjoyed several visits to the coast where we found many uncrowded, beautiful white beaches and an azure blue sea (but beware that the sea is cold but refreshing!). A highlight of our visit was a tour and tasting at the local Torgo vineyard where we experienced delicious wine as well as wonderful hospitality.

A super holiday. Thank you so much.

There are some fantastic sandy beaches a 45 minute drive away on the Rias Baixias coastline. The “Islas Cies” are a 30 minute boat ride away from Vigo, pretty island beaches with white sands and turquoise waters.

Santiago de Compostela: 1 hour 30

Oporto: 2 hours

Airports are served by the low coast airlines: Ryanair, Easyjet and Vueling.



A Cañiza (6 kms) Local market town, good for shops, bars, restaurants.

Mondariz (30 kms) Pretty spa town with river beach and golf.

Orense (45 kms) Roman town, fantastic thermal pools on banks of river Miño.

Vigo (45 kms) Bustling port city

Santiago (125 kms) Mediaeval pilgrim city.


Melgaco (15 kms) Pretty market town, good for restaurants.

Valenca do Minho (50 kms) Historic fort town, overlooking the river Miño.

Perhaps one of the main benefits of our location is that it enables you to explore Spain and Portugal. Both countries offer some fantastic countryside and scenery. We are pretty much off the beaten track, which is part of the charm. Local towns and villages have that "untouched by time" feeling, perfect for strolling around and slipping into a slower pace of life. We can give you information on lots of local beauty spots, walks, places of interest and activities, which include some of the following; Rafting/canoeing (10 kms), Horse-riding (6 kms), Golf (30 kms), Spas/Thermal baths (30/40 kms), Natural therapy centre (1 km), Wine tasting centre (1 km).

As for fiestas, the list is endless and nearly all seem to be celebrating food and/or drink. Galicia is best known for its variety and abundance of fish and seafood. Sample Pulpo a la Gallega (octopus prepared Galician style) in local tapas bars or in popular coastal resorts such as Baiona. In our local town of A Cañiza, you’ll also find an impressive array of delicious jamones (cured hams) whilst Arbo (10 kms) is famous for Lamprey, fished in the river Miño, and dedicates its annual fiesta to this local delicacy! For wine enthusiasts, the local vineyards on the Ruta del Vino Rias Baixas offer tours and sampling.
