Part of its population is from Catalonia and the town preserves the use of the Catalan language, recognized as official by the Italian Republic and the region, as the dialect name algherese dialect (alguerés).

- And, of course, as everywhere in Sardinia, the nombreaux Nuragic sites.
The typical nuraghe is shaped like a truncated cone and looks out to a medieval tower within a tholos. The walls consist of three components:
an outer layer in the form of round, inclined inwardly and composed of several layers of stones whose size decreases with height;
an intermediate layer, made of small stones and earth;
an inner layer consisting of small stones forming a dome-shaped shell similar to a tholos.
The entire construction is sturdy: a nuraghe standing just by the weight of its stones, which can approach each several tons. Some nuraghes reach 20 m high. A spiral staircase, stone, is built inside the walls, leading to the upper floors or terrace, if they exist.
There remains a little less than 7000 nuraghi in Sardinia. They are found mainly in the northwest and south of the island.
Su Nuraxi, the village nuragic best preserved, is located in Barumini, in the Medio Campidano. It is world heritage.
The most imposing nuraghe Santu Antine nuraghe is near Torralba. Other impressive nuraghi are located near Alghero, Macomer, Abbasanta, Orroli and Villanovaforru.
