About Paul Gawith
Paul and Carolyn are retired and live in Arundel, West Sussex. We set out 10 years ago to find a place to escape to in the cold British winters and often disappointing summers. We are both quite particular and wanted a house that would be warm and comfortable in winter and offer outdoor living in summer. We were also wanted to be within easy reach of good facilities, walking, skiing, beaches and culture. It has taken us longer than we thought to achieve our goal but are overjoyed with the result and in the intervening years have got to know the area and people of Andalucia well. We have travelled the world and rented properties in all sorts of places so we know what we look for when we rent a house and have tried to provide everything we ourselves have ever wanted in a rental property.
Paul Gawith purchased this Villa in 2001
Why Paul Gawith chose Lecrín
We found this spot in 2001 having fallen in love with the relaxed pace of the area. The site is stunningly beautiful, quiet and surrounded by nature, it feels remote but is within easy access of Granada, the beaches of the Costa Tropical, the slopes of the Sierra Nevada Ski resort of Pradollano and the many beautiful villages of the Lecrin Valley. We encountered many problems to get the correct permissions to build on the site (not unusual in Spain) but kept working away and continuing to visit the area. We finally completed the house in October 2011. There is still much more work to do, replanting, landscaping and building a swimming pool but at any moment we can turn to the views and think wow! If you love the mountains, the countryside and tranquillity you will not be disappointed.
What makes this Villa unique
The house is cool in summer and warm in winter with all modern facilities. There is a well equipped kitchen, modern bathrooms and large patio and sitting areas. The tower room affords shelter from the hot sun and a cooling breeze if you want to sit and daydream. The plateau and terraces above the house offers interesting places to explore and round Lake Beznar there are numerous walks, relaxed or challenging, depending on your mood. The house is at the end of paved rural road through the orange groves which is steep in places but it is only 10 minutes drive from the village of Talará and 15 minutes from the larger town of Durcal. There are numerous local restaurants within a short drive but the barbecue at the house, the tranquillity and the views of the sunsets may be all you ever want.

A most beautiful home in a unique & stunning location.
We loved this amazing house. It is beautiful to look at and live in. Home comforts all around and superbly equipped in every way. We love to cook and enjoyed picking fresh herbs in the garden and even some green beans and salad leaves !! The scenery around is spectacular and ever-changing. The various terraces allowed us to enjoy our day or evening either in the sun or in the cool shade. It was a haven of tranquility when we weren't splashing around in the lovely pool. Thanks
Thank you for your comments we are so glad you enjoyed your stay.
Great house, nightmare access.
The house is well equipped, large, comfortable and cool.
Ideal for a stay except that the access track to the house from the village is steep, extremely narrow (hire car brushed both sides in places), has hairpin bends with considerable drops to the valley below and is not suitable for anyone of a nervous disposition. We left a day early.
We are really sorry that these visitors found the access road to Casa Moginar so difficult. Indeed the access to the house is on a concreted rural road that winds down from the village of Talara through the orange groves to the Lake and Casa Moginar. It is a mountain area so the road is steep in parts We say all this on our website and although some visitors find the road difficult at first, most people get used to it after a couple of trips.
The road is wide enough for a builders lorry or we would never have got the house built but appears much narrower in late summer because all the shrubbery along the road has grown up and died off in the heat. The farmers don't cut the sides back until the autumn.
Special interest holidays:
Horse Riding. There are stables in Restebal and Albunuelas and also in Lanajaron with great hacks up into the foothills.
Cycling. The area is well known for its challenging roads with many of the local Clubs from Granada and the coast using the area as a training round. Steep roads with relative little traffic and stunning views.
Tennis is available at several of the local villages with a big club at Otura, Club de Tenis Padel Garros. Website is www.garros.es Telephone 958 559 016.
Walking is also a big activity in the area and there are local organised walks and tours.
Salobrena beach is 40 km by car (35 minutes). This is a typically Spanish resort with good swimming and gravelly sand. Good beach chiringuitos for sunbeds, umbrellas, drinks and lunch.
La Herradura is 50km, an older town with quieter beach and similar facilities.
Nerja is 65 km this is a much more built up resort with strong British presence and beautiful but busy beach.
Other resorts along this stretch of coast include Almunecar and Marina del Este.
A car is essential at this location which is:
117km from Malaga airport (70 minutes by car).
40km from Granada airport (35 minutes by car).
From Santander (ferry from Portsmouth) it is a 10 hour drive to the house, best broken into two stages with an overnight stop.
Guests arriving for the first time will be met by our local representative in Talará & shown the way to the house (10 minutes) and how everything works.
This should be done in daylight in order to remember the route.
The nearest village Talará is 10 minutes by car and has small supermarkets, banks, butcher, chemist and post office. There are several bars and restaurants and a filling station with internet access.
Dúrcal is a larger town about 20 minutes away with a new modern supermarket, numerous shops & facilities and an emergency medical clinic on the bypass.
Granada is about 30 minutes by car, and the Alhambra Palace about 35 minutes.
The ski resort of Sol y Nieve is 62 km (60 minutes by car).
Chité is a small village located at an altitude of 650 metres near Lake Beznar in the Lecrín Valley. Lecrín is a semi-tropical valley filled with orange and lemon trees as well as olive, fig and almond trees. It represents the real Andalusia and yet is close to sophisticated Granada and the Mediterranean coast. Several villages in the valley offer shopping, restaurants, bars and other facilities. The nearby village of Albuñuelas is the highest village in the valley, offering a weekly market and several historic buildings, including a 14th Century Moorish Tower. Melegís has more shops and holds the three-day festival of San Juan in late June. From Chite you can walk down to Lake Beznar. Near the motorway, Talará contains the ruins of an Arab castle and offers some nightlife for young people! Dúrcal is the biggest town in the valley, offering a weekly market, some nightlife, English newspapers and access to the Sierra Nevada Parque Natural.
Throughout the Lecrin valley are numerous restaurants ranging from small bars selling Tapas and local platters to Hotels offering fine dining. The scene constantly changes and we have included details and recommendations in our guest information pack at the house. Our local representative will also have up to date local knowledge.
The Alpujarras, the location of Chris Stewart's "Driving over Lemons" book, are 45 minutes drive and offer spectacular scenery, interesting walks and attractive white villages to visit.
