About Hilary Latham
My part time home is in Yorkshire, England where I spend as much time as possible with my two daughters. They are both now in their 30's and, like me, they enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. The only problem with England is the weather! I am a complementary healthcare practitioner and I am very lucky to be able to practice not only in England, when I am there, but also In Portugal. Many of the guests to our house have enjoyed a relaxing therapy after a day walking or even not walking! As a keen gardener I really enjoy the opportunity of growing my own fruit and veg in such a wonderful climate.
Hilary Latham purchased this House in 2010
Why Hilary Latham chose Lousã
Having lived for six years in the Algarve I was introduced to Central Portugal by a friend. From that moment my whole life changed, I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. Getting away from the crowds to experience a veritable paradise. The climate here is equally as warm and sunny as the Algarve but not as humid which made walking and biking in the summer so much more enjoyable. The scenery is stunning and discovering the property, Casa no Céu (The house in the Sky), high in the mountain range of the Serra da Lousã, I realised this was the place I could happily settle for the rest of my life.
What makes this House unique
Even though the property is high on the mountain range it is only a fifteen minute drive down into the town of Lousã where there is everything I need with many supermarkets, banks, library, outdoor swimming pool and a market selling local fruit and veg. And then when I'm home I can forget the car, I just walk out of my door to explore the beautiful countryside and breath in the pure mountain air. I sometimes think I have discovered heaven on earth.

We spent a week staying at Casa No Ceu (House in the Sky), I can not recommend this place highly enough!
It was our first stay here and found it was a perfect break!!
We travelled up the mountain track, so excited to see the view at the top! We reached the house and Hilary and Rue were waiting to welcome us. Hilary made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived, a cup of tea and some amazing Lemon Drizzle cake (the best we've ever had!) was jut what we needed after our planes, trains and automobiles trip there. Although I would recommend it as we flew to Lisbon and got the 2 hour train to Coinimbra and get a car from there!
The first morning was when I truly grasped the reason for the name of the cottage, I walked onto the Roof Terrace and was awestruck with the surrounding scenery and beautiful clouds, I got some amazing photos!! The fresh bread and homemade jam are perfect for breakfast to be able to site and have breakfast in the kitchen with a super view is truly special.
We spent our holiday relaxing, walking from the doorstep of the cottage round the brilliant tracks around the mountains, we visited Coinimbra which is a fantastic day out to a walled town about 45 mins from the cottage by road, we went to Aveiro which is a coastal town and saw the little Venice, an amazing wine Bar, took a boat trip and went onto the peninsula to see the stripy houses and even managed to do a trip to the pottery factory! I took hundreds of photos and will enjoy framing some to enjoy the memories of the lovely place!
We made the most of Hilary's treatment extras (which she doesn't push or try to sell which we found really refreshing) we both had a 'Dow-en-towe' (spelt it phonetically!) which was my favourite of a facial and a pressure point massage I was floating on the clouds after it!
Highlights...... Hilary, Rue, treatments, and walking from a castle up a steep mountain to find a tiny slate village and have a fabulous coffee overlooking the valley in the sunshine!
We felt honoured to have experienced such a beautiful place, wonderful hospitality and relaxation like we have never known..... I cant wait to go back! Just Bliss!
A little bit of Heaven
We were greeted very warmly by Hilary and a very excited tail wagging Rue, the family dog. We had driven for 2 days through France and Spain to get to this very special place. Hilary had provided for a very reasonable fee, home cooked Spaghetti Bolognese. A very welcome treat for us two weary travellers!
After a good nights sleep, we explored the house and the roof terrace. Wow!!! Take the spiral staircase and be prepared for a little bit of heaven! The views are breath takingly beautiful. In the morning the clouds look like candy floss as they lie low all around you. Then as they lift you are mesmerised by a kaleidoscope of colour as the sun rises and when it sets over the mountains it truly feels like you are in heaven, the sky is ablaze with the burnished flaming colours of the retiring sun
Hilary stocks the cupboard and fridge full of basic provisions like tea and milk and a complimentary lemon cake and home made bread which is absolutely delish!!.
The house also comprises all the comforts of home. Comfy sofa and Sky tv and the Internet, which for me was the cherry on the cake as I could keep in touch with my elderly mum. A big lush double bed and a twin-bedded room on the lower floor. Enough crockery and cooking utensils to make a fiesta!
I recommend The House in the Sky to anyone who appreciates a rustic setting and enjoys seeing nature at its best. And to anyone with mobility problems like i have, these can be overcome with a bit of forward planning and imagination. Thank you Hilary for making our holiday very memorable. See you next year!
We stayed at Casa No Ceu for one week and it was the truly the most wonderful week. Hilary is the best owner we have ever met nothing was too much trouble. The house is stocked with everything you could think of, in all our years of renting we have never been to anywhere that provided you with so much. Hilary even lent us her rucksack to go walking in the hills, as though we had brought our boots we forgot the bag. The house seating and beds were comfortable. Our first few days the weather was cool but the well stocked log pile and the fabulous fire kept us so toasty in the evenings. We accepted Hilary's offer of providing us with an evening meal and we were not disappointed. Every meal would have fed 4 people and was beautifully cooked. The welcome pack, homemade bread, jam and the cake all delicious. The views from the patio are exceptional and eating a meal whilst looking at the view each evening was just perfect. When not out on the hills we enjoyed spending the day in the sun in on the terrace. Now the hills some fabulous walks right from the door.We started with a few short walks, the paths are excellent and easy to follow. Our finest walk was from the house to the top of Trevin around 15 miles there and back. An excellent walk on easy ground the toughest bit being the hike up to Trevin. The best bit was returning to find Hilary on the doorstep with our dinner!!!. Now for the added extras, like many women of a certain age my energies are low and at the time of this holiday they were at there lowest. I decided to have a Reiki session with Hilary and it was outstanding, so much so that I walked the 15 miles two days later and remained energised even when I got home. When going shopping Hilary took our list to save us the trouble of going to town. This is gem of a cottage in a beautiful place with the most wonderful host. Writing this review just makes me want to go back and recharge my batteries. Hope to see you soon Hilary.
Have just spent a fantastic week in this amazing property. Its all about the views, they are spectacular. Received a warm and friendly welcome from Rue the family dog and Hilary who provided a very generous welcome pack which among other things included fresh baked bread and lemon cake.
The stone cottage is very rustic and homely, fully equipped from the washing machine, TV with English speaking channels, husband loved that. A kitchen with all the crockery you would ever need, in fact you may not need any as Hilary will provide delicious home cooked meals at a very economical cost. Fridge was also stocked with homemade marmalade and jam, I had the marmalade which was really yum. Small library where I found a book by my favourite author which I had not read. Cottage and linen were clean and fresh. Surrounding hills are full of beautiful walking trails and if you are lucky like us you will see wild boar and deer. The peace and serenity of the place made me want to stay for ever. It all comes back to the views, we loved the rooftop balcony, what a wonderful place to contemplate life.
We stocked up with local fresh produce from the Farmers Market in Lousa, that was a interesting experience, not speaking any Portuguese, well worth a visit.
Could be a challenge to access the cottage if you have any mobility issues as it is quite a steep slope from the road to the cottage plus you need to climb a tight spiral staircase to reach the rooftop balcony.
Definitely lives up to its title, a few mornings there was some low cloud and haze, and we were looking down on the clouds, beautiful to see the valley slowly reappear as the clouds dispersed.
If you really want to get away from all the hustle and bustle, and get in touch with nature and unwind, then this is the place to do it.
You will not be disappointed.
One hour 30 minutes drive. The Silver coast is famous for it’s seemingly endless, nearly deserted stretches of sandy beaches. Figueira da Foz is a lively seaside town on the coast, home to the country's largest beach, stretching for more than 3km (2 miles). It is so wide, that it is a good five-minute walk across the sand to the sea. It is a popular location for all water sports including surfing and is packed with bars and restaurants for the less energetic.
Porto airport, to the north is approximately a two hour drive; join the A1 – IP1 and head south to exit at Condeixa, junction 11.
To the south Lisbon airport is a two and a half hour drive, again joining the AI –IP1 and head north to exit at Condeixa, junction 11.
However all have good rail links to and from Coimbra b station. Coimbra is only a 30 minute drive away. Car hire is essential if you are arriving by train or plane.
Lousã 15 minute drive.
Coimbra 30 minute drive.
Fatima 1 hour 30 minute drive.
Tomar 1 hour 30 minute drive.
Serra de Estrela 2 hour drive.
This fabulous location lends itself to some amazing leisure and adventure pursuits.
Paragliding. Having tried and tested the paragliding, flying past Casa no Céu was an experience not to be missed! We are more than happy to arrange a flight for you.
Mountain biking. Some say the Serra da Lousã is the capital of Mountain Biking in Portugal. The downhill biking is very popular, not for the faint hearted!!
Swimming. In Lousã and Miranda there are lovely open air swimming pools. Also there are many Praia Fluvials (river beaches)in the area, a refreshing natural swimming experience.
Horse Riding. If you would like to explore the area on horse back then Gois is only a 35 minute drive away and has all facilities.
