House and Barn in Garrigill, Nr. Alston, Cumbria, Lake District, England, UK - Situated On The Edge Of Garrigill Village, Only 2 Minutes Walk To The Shop, Pub And Historic Church
About Michael Burton
Michael and Kathryn have two children, John and Melissa. The house does refect the family - the kitchen is full of useful (and some might say useless) kitchen equipment and cookery books, as food is a major passion for the whole family (and job for Kathryn). Melissa and Kathryn like to enter the cookery competitions The modern gas barbeque and patio area are Michael's territory John has a love of the outdoors including fishing, and gardening. It's likely that you'll see John at some point tending has vegetables in the kitchen garden. He always enters the vegetable competitions at the Garrigill gala
Michael Burton purchased this Barn in 2009
Why Michael Burton chose Alston Moor
We visited the area a number of times with friends and just loved it. The scenery is beautiful at any time of year, in any weather, but the walks up to the waterfall in Winter are breathtaking, and it's wonderful to watch the salmon swimming up stream in the Autumn literally 50 metres from the house. We've always found the people in Garrigill extremely welcoming and there are regular events - craft fairs, fireworks nights, Garrigill gala, carol singing, and even quoits in the Summer
What makes this Barn unique
The local pub has open fires and does wholesome home cooked meals, as well as having musical evenings, and various other activities The possibility of renting a private pool by the hour has always proved popular with our family and friends. You do need to book in advance. It's a lovely way to relax after a busy day before heading back to snuggle in front of the log fire

Lovely cottage in a wonderful location
The cottage is a perfect home from home with everything you need provided. It is in a quiet location just away from the centre of Garrigill which is a picturesque and historic village. The location is perfect as there are many local walks and attractions , including the Pennine Way and Ashgill Force waterfall. Local shops and pubs can be found in Alston about 4 miles away and there is a pub and very good restaurant in Nenthead which is a bit closer. I would recommend this cottage totally, we had a wonderful holiday there.
Lovely, homely , comfortable cottage.
Absolutely loved it. Everything we needed, plus more. Pictures online need to be updated as they do not do the cottage justice.
Lovely home, lovely owners.
Just what we needed, a cosy, quiet, lovely stay.
Another fab break
This is our third time at this cottage and we love it. It is compact but has everything you need and the unlimited wood is a bonus in the cold weather. It's nice to be in the 'middle of nowhere' but still close enough to travel to the lakes. Michael and his wife are very friendly and the biscuits and wine were a lovely touch. Looking forward to our next visit.
Excellent stay at Garrigill.
We had a lovely stay in this beautiful little cottage. It had a lovely warm stove fire which helped to make it more cosy and inviting. The cottage had everything we need from a well equipped kitchen to games and PS3 to amuse the teenagers. It was an excellent location for walking and cycling and even gill scrambling! Would definitely visit again.
Cosy cottage in a lovely quiet village
Gatecroft is a lovely cosy cottage, it is small but doesn't feel it, it has everything you need in a perfect location. The area is great for walking with a number of walks that start and finish in the village, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return as soon as we can.
The property is located on the Sea to Sea (CTC) & Penine way England's most popular long distance cycle route, and there are many walks to follow locally in beautiful scenery.
There is plenty to keep all ages fully occupied within easy driving distance - The Eden Ostrich World, The Rheghed Centre, The South Tynedale Railway at Alston, The Hub at Alston (heritage and transport musuem), Nenthead Mines and Heritage Centre, Kilhope Lead Mining Musuem, Weardale Museum, and Stanhope open air pool ( heated ) Hadrian's Wall, and the Lake District.
It is also possible to rent a private pool in the village of Garrigill, within only 2 minutes walk. ( currently £20/hour for the private use of the pool, sauna, and jacuzzi ) A great way to relax at the end of a busy day.
