This 90 sq.m palazetto features original stone floors, domed ceilings and sandstone archways, alongside air conditioning, all-new, contemporary furniture, WI-FI, and marble kitchen counters. Modica offers urban amenities and relaxed charm. It also makes a great base to explore south eastern Sicily, including UNESCO world heritage sites, Blue Flag beaches, hiking trails and nearby gorges, and Greek and Roman ruins. The historic centre includes restaurants and cafes, as well as live music, theatre, and, during the summer months, you can enjoy movies and performances under the stars. The historic centre is compact, and easily managed on foot. We think it's a lively and entertaining place, but still relaxed, casual, and quiet.

About Rosanna

Our jobs (journalist and teacher) have allowed us to travel for long periods of time during the summer months and over 10 years ago we travelled to Sicily for the first time. During my last sabbatical year, we decided that travelling to Sicily wasn't enough and that we both wanted to 'put down roots' in a place that felt like home from our very first trip. I spent most of my sabbatical restoring our 18th century home in the historic centre of Modica. A daunting task, but made easier because of the wonderful and hardworking people I met along the way. The renovation was completed, as promised, by the end of June 2011 and we spend our first summer in our new house. We love it and we hope that you too enjoy your stay in Modica - it is a truly amazing town.

Why Rosanna chose Modica

Modica is most definitely 'off the beaten track'! Sicily's southeast is, in our opinion, a particularly beautiful part of an already beautiful and interesting island. Its proximity to Siracusa, Noto and Catania makes it easy to get to and appealing in terms of places of interest for tourists. Although Modica is a popular tourist destination, with much to do and see, downtown businesses (restaurants, caffes, farmers' markets) continue to cater to both locals and visitors so that one can really feel what life and living in an southern Italian town is like.

What makes this house unique

Our property is located in the historic centre of town surrounded by cobblestone lanes and streets. We walk everywhere and take the bus or train to the beach and nearby towns. We rent a car when necessary, but if we have the time, I prefer to use public transit. Our favourite caffe, Caffe dell'Arte, is a 5 minute walk from our house as is our favourite pizzeria: La Contea and bar: Hemingway's. There are countless others, but it's nice to have such amazing services nearby. Our house was completely restored by our Florentine architect who was committed to using traditional materials and reusing/restoring whatever we could, it definitely has all of the modern conveniences and comforts of home. The best part is that the beach is 20 minutes away!

Modern spacious comfort in beautiful historic bones: Jane NZ

The apartment was the best of nine two bedroom apartments we have encountered so far on our travels through Italy. Italian apartments in historic centres are usually small but this apartment has an upper level with an open plan connection between kitchen, dining and lounge but at the same time these spaces are all still their own rooms - not massive but spacious & comfortable for 5. Add the two outdoor spaces & everyone can find their own hot/cool/quiet space as needs in this light and open level. The kitchen was also the best appointed we've come across and the easy parking close by was also the location of the fresh fish and vege stalls. The downstairs bedrooms were very generous and comfortable & the two bathrooms modern & comparitively large. We loved Modica for its baroque charm but also it's realness. It's a bustling town with lots of shops & plenty of great food options & it all starts just 5 minutes from your door.

  • The first floor bathroom includes a very large walk-in, newly tiled porcelain and stone-tiled shower, sink and toilet. The upstairs bathroom includes a sink, toilet, bidet and Bosch washing machine. A small ironing board and iron are also available.

Both bedrooms have ceiling fans and a Samsung air-conditioning/heating unit.

Notes on accommodation: As well as having easy access to parking (a one-minute walk from our door), local farmers also set up fruit and veg stands along the main road every day. You are also within a 5 minute walk of a full-service grocery store, independent butcher, fish monger, cheese monger and bakery! Our Samsung air conditioning units also provide heat for those travellers who wish to visit Sicily during the cooler months of the year. Outside: The interior terrace is the perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee or tea or sip a cool drink in the evening, in privacy and under the stars. The balcony offers views of the street and castle and a lovely place to sit, relax and watch the world go by. Utility Room: 4 comfortable beach chairs and 2 beach umbrellas are available for your use. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, dishcloths, tea towels and cloth napkins are included and freshly laundered on a weekly basis. Final cleaning is also included in the price.

Special interest holidays:

A private chef can be arranged if you wish to sample local specialties and see how they are made. An excursion to a rustic farmhouse in the stunning Val Di Noto, where their specialty is homemade ricotta cheese, can be organized as well! A 4-course lunch including wine and a whole lotta fresh ricotta costs 20 euros per person!

Modica's historic centre is compact and easily managed on foot. Day trips to nearby town such as Noto (75kms), Ragusa (15kms) and Scicli (8kms) are easily managed by train or bus, but if you prefer to drive, Ragusa has ample parking at the town's entrance and both Scicli and Noto have loads of street parking.

Further Details:

La Margherita is located in the historic centre of town and everything you need is within easy walking distance. Most stores and banks are closed in the afternoon so plan to visit banks and grocery stores/markets in the early morning to avoid disappointment. Most things reopen at 5, but banks are only open for a short period of time in the mid-afternoon.

Maximum occupancy is for 7 people. Although our house is located in the historic centre of town, the surrounding streets are residential. La Margherita is a quiet neighbourhood and excessive noise is discouraged any time of day, but especially after 11pm.

You can take the highway (A18) from Catania towards Gela to its end at Rosolini (highway to Gela has not been completed) and continue on to Modica BASSA from Rosolini through Ispica. You could also take the secondary road (more scenic) SP194 off the A18 and towards Ragusa and then on to Modica Bassa. Follow signs to CENTRO (indicated by bullseye road signs).
