About the property

House In Argeliers, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Centre Of Village, Access To Mediterranean Beaches, Languedoc Vineyards, and The Canal Du Midi

Our 19th century vineyard owner’s property has been restored to offer luxurious holiday accommodation, with five large double bedrooms, a small pool and a delightful courtyard garden. It's recent restoration has kept the original high ceilings, stone walls and tiled floors. The four south-facing main bedrooms are air-conditioned and all enjoy spectacular views of the Canal du Midi, a short walk away down a tree-lined avenue. The house has been decorated and furnished to a high standard. The courtyard garden and additional sun terrace above extend the indoor luxuries of our French home into private outdoor space. The 5-metre hexagonal plunge pool is perfect for a cooling dip during the hot Languedoc summer. The house is full of character offering a real home from home in rural South of France.

Why Jerry Houdret chose Argeliers

Our home is a spacious house with plenty of bedroom space for up to 2 families, located in the centre of Argeliers village. While the village is rural, it is a good size and offers a number of local amenities, shops, restaurants, bakeries etc. Equally, the village is located on the Canal du Midi, and yet, only 40 minutes drive from either Beziers or Carcassonne airport.

With cycling by the Canal, kayaking on the river Orb, windsurfing on the Lac de Jouarres or just lazing by our pool as holiday options, we think the area has much to offer. Of course the Cathar forts and Carcassonne are nearby if walking, climbing or historical sites are your interest.

What makes this house unique

The spaciousness of this "Maison de Maitre" makes it an obvious place to relax and enjoy rural life. Because of the numerous bedrooms and numerous living spaces (office, lounge, upper terrace, courtyard), up to 10 people can comfortably enjoy this house without being in one another's way. Cycling or walking on the Canal du Midi is 5 minutes from the door, the courtyard is perfect for evening aperitifs, and barbecues, the pool is ideal for a cool down on a hot summers' day.

Notes on accommodation: Our French home is different from other holiday houses, because it has been our private 2nd home for 18 years. Our renovations and furnishings are for our home-from-home enjoyment and have been completed to an exceptional standard. The courtyard garden and terrace above are particularly private and quaint - the ideal indoor and outdoor set up for combined families and friends on holiday. Outside: Within the walled and private courtyard, there is a 5m hexagonal plunge pool. The plunge pool is private to the renters at Chez Houdret. The steps up to the pool can be removed for child safety, and the 2nd terrace around the pool gated as well. Here is the large barbecue under the open sided but roofed area, in case of a shower. Two cars can fit in the driveway with high lockable gates to ensure total privacy. Utility Room: A linen room, off the main first floor bathroom, has washing machine, ironing and ironing board, drying racks etc. Outside clothes line on terrace. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All towels and linen are provided, including pool towels. The property is cleaned thoroughly and linen changed between all bookings. At clients' request, a weekly cleaning service can be provided for a reasonable fee. Other: The study is situated on the front (south side) of house with computer desk and comfortable chair - a quiet place to escape with a computer or book. Wifi connection.

Lovely Spacious House in Local Town

  • 5 of 5

The house had so much charm. Filled with antiques yet modern sofa and bed plus all cooking supplies one needs. This is not your ikea furnished place but someone’s second house with personal touches. The second story terrace was amazing for watching the stars and sitting out at night. The bottom courtyard had beautiful lavender shrubs and a splendid mid size pool. A 10 person table inside and large outside table made eating with a large family very comfortable. The bathrooms where outstanding, recently remodeled I think. The owner and greeter where lovely and helpful throughout the trip. There are 6 bedrooms that are very large, several families or extended family could stay. We have 5 kids and they each thought they had a palace. This house works for families. And the town is so sweet with local butcher and bakery and minimarket 2 blocks away. There is a great playground 4 blocks away, and to stroll along the canal was a delight for all of us. We rarely heard English as we were in the middle of locals greeting everyone with bonjour. The town is 40 min from best beach in France (Valras-Plage) where you can rent umbrellas and chairs plus tons of shops and bars. Narbonne and Belziers 30 min away, Avignon about 2 hours, Barcelona 3 hrs. Canoeing and biking in beautiful countryside is easily avail and safe. Highly recommend this special house.

A great house for a large family or friends

  • 4 of 5

We spent 4 wonderful weeks at the house in Argeliers. The 5 bedroomed house was perfect for filling with friends and family. The sunny courtyard garden with the 5m pool and large BBQ is not overlooked and has direct access to the large kitchen diner, which seated 10 adults comfortably at a huge table. The well equipped kitchen including full oven and big fridge freezer and dishwasher also had plenty of room to allow plenty of helpers when preparing food. The lounge was little used, because we had such good weather, but again was of a great size with TV. Room to pull one car off the road into the drive behind locked gates. A small lockup room outside which we used to keep our two bikes in. The 4 main bedrooms are all huge, with modern high quality bathrooms( the two on the first floor share a bathroom, but the two on the second floor have a bathroom each) The 5th bedroom on the 1st floor was also popular, because it had its own shower room, and access to the huge terrace which had full sun all morning.

We were regular visitors to Le Chat qui Peche- the bar and restaurant 5 minutes walk away overlooking the canal- open all day every day for meals, or just drinks and ice-creams. There is one baker in the village, plus a small Spar supermarket and a butchers and newsagents.

The village co-operative Cave- very friendly - for wine tasting and purchasing, and the olive oil factory tour L'Oubilo too. Villages nearby worth a visit - Salleles sur Aude, Le Somail, Capestang and Trebes, and Minerve. Cycling along the Canal du Mid towpaths was a popular activity, but also visited Beziers, Narbonne, Carcassonne, LaGrasse, and Collioures and many more. Just 45 minutes to the Med too.

The village is quiet- which suited us, but we were there out of the main French holiday season, so am sure it livens up a bit during late July and August

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review of Chezhoudret, my French home, because it reminds us how well the house is equipped from bathrooms to the kitchen and garden, with private pool. Not many houses sleeping ten have big rooms and enough bathrooms to share, or an exclusive private garden. And the added benefit of your review is the praise for our lovely village with local shops, and the many nearby sites, villages and activities. And no one forgets the short walk to the Chat qui Peche to watch the boat renters pass while one enjoys a glass of something and maybe a meal as well. Thank you.

Lovely spacious town house with courtyard pool, five minutes walk from the Canal du Midi.

  • 5 of 5

What we liked about the gite: spacious accommodation spread over 3 floors; cool inside space to contrast a sunny courtyard garden; large & sociable kitchen/diner; excellent bathrooms; beach towels provided, which was a nice touch.

The area: plenty of amenities within walking distance including restaurants, boulangeries & importantly wine cooperative cave; ideally situated to explore beaches, Carcassonne, Parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc & vineyards; many local markets throughout the week (Saint-Chinian our favourite).

Would have no hesitation in recommending this gite.

Owner's Response: Really pleased the house, village, and location all met and exceeded expectations. The markets and local shops, walks, canal, restaurants and Wine Cave were what made us buy here 20 years ago. Very pleased you agreed and approve. Thanks for the positive words. Jerry

Wonderful home in a beautiful setting with a fantastic host!

  • 5 of 5

Chez Houdret was a beautiful home and much larger than I expected! The house has incredible charm, was well equipped and has a beautiful garden. The small pool was perfect for cooling off and for the kids to play. The setting was a very quiet small town surrounded by vineyards and right on the canal. It was conveniently located not far from historical sights, beautiful countryside, shopping and the beach. The host and his local representatives were incredibly helpful - they advised us on all sorts of arrangements, including babysitting. I highly recommend this property!

Lovely base for family holiday

  • 4 of 5

Spacious villa with plenty of room for 2 families of 4 (teenage kids). Unlike holiday company brochures, the house is bigger than it appears in the photos on the website. We very much liked the tiled floors and high ceilings - as well as the sun terrace and pool. We arrived later than planned - at 7.30, but were warmly welcomed by Nynke who was happy to deal with queries both before and during our stay. Our holiday was lovely - highlights including hiring bikes to explore locally, walks along the canal du midi, the beach at Narbonne and sightseeing - Carcassone is commercialised, but it's very impressive. Argeliers is a sleepy French village - friendly locals say "bonjour", and the boulangerie sells lovely bread and cakes, we'd also strongly recommend Restaurant 87 - a five minute walk from the house with lovely food and friendly staff (and wine cheaper than soft drinks). For balance - this is the wish list bit - the lounge would have been better with second sofa and I wish I'd used insect repellent - there are insects that bite around the canal in the evenings!
