About Fleur Gates
We are Fleur and Rob. We moved down from Surrey and immediately set about designing and converting the detached annexe into the Boathouse. Our aim was to create the look and feel of a boutique hotel, but with the peace and seclusion of a holiday cottage. Fleur is in charge of bookings and Rob takes care of the maintenance.
Fleur Gates purchased this Cottage in 2008
Why Fleur Gates chose Kingsbridge
We have family who moved to Kingsbridge a few years before us. Each time we came to visit them we were reluctant to go home. In 2008, ready for an adventure, we took the plunge and moved down ourselves. The great thing about Kingsbridge is that not only is it a thriving market town year round, but it's also located on the beautiful Kingsbridge estuary. No matter what time of year the rolling countryside and estuary make Kingsbridge a lovely place to be. Plus the central location of Kingsbridge makes it a great base to explore the wonderful coastline, countryside and other market towns of the South Hams.
What makes this Cottage unique
We like to think that we’ve thought of everything you might need to enjoy your stay. The Boathouse is equipped to feel like a real home. When you arrive all you need to do is unpack your bags and relax. The bed has a quality pocket sprung mattress to give a good night’s rest. We offer free superfast Wi-Fi so you can research your next trip out or check your emails. Every year we completely refresh the Boathouse so it is pristine and ready to welcome you.

Lovely little house with everything catered for, was spotless too! Would highly recommend
Thank you! So pleased you enjoyed your stay at the Boathouse.
Beautiful property, comfortable & so well equipped. It had everything we needed.
A superb property finished to a really high standard. Perfect place to stay for a couple. Fleur was very welcoming so thank you so much.
The perfect little bolt hole
The Boathouse is perfectly formed and superbly decorated. We absolutely loved our short break in Kingsbridge and would highly recommend it
Small but perfectly formed
The Boathouse was ideal for 2 people, had everything you needed and more. Good location, parking right outside the house, but hone your reversing skills! Our sat nav kept saying the property was on the right side going out of Kingsbridge when in actual fact it is on the left. Best advice is to drive past and just before you approach the bridge there is a small road where it is reasonably easy to turn around and go back towards Kingsbridge with The Boathouse on your right hand side, parking is so much easier that way. Best meal we had was at the Cricket Inn at Beesands, best fish and chips at the Codfather in Kingsbridge. Salcombe is a delight and produce their own gin which I can recommend! Despite the weather enjoyed a wonderful 4:nights at The Boathouse.
Thank you for your review and your recommendations which will be very helpful for other guests - delighted you had everything you needed at the Boathouse.
Comfortable modern place with great view
Compact and nicely set out with lots of crockery etc. Easy walking distance to the town along the estuary. Clean and warm. Would stay again.
Thank you Debbie, we hope to see you again.
Would love to come back to stay again! Know salcombe/kingsbridge very well as we used to stay for family holidays, so was glad to find this perfect place! Will recommend to friends and family! Immaculate, beautiful, cosy boathouse with an amazing view! Thankyou so much fleur! Xxxx
Hi Lorna, thank you for your lovely review - i’m very pleased you enjoyed your stay and it was what you needed. Please do visit again if you’re able to! Kind regards, Fleur
There are plenty of great beaches in close proximity. South Milton Sands is a 15 minute drive away (free parking for National Trust members) and one of the best places to catch a sunset. Slapton Sands is 15 minutes away and features a 15 mile stretch of spectacular coast and The Start Bay Inn, serving amazing fish and chips. Bigbury is a 25 minutes drive away and at low tide you can walk across to the iconic Burgh Island Hotel (frequented by Agatha Christie) and the 700 year old Pilchard Inn.
Approximately 1 hour's drive from Exeter International airport and 4.5 hours drive from London. A car is not essential, but is recommended. Nearest train station is Totnes, which has great national links. Buses run from Kingsbridge to Plymouth, Totnes, Exeter and Dartmouth. The trip to Dartmouth is spectacular from the top of a double decker bus.
Other local places of interest include Salcombe which is 6.5 miles away. Located on the mouth of the Kingsbridge estuary it features beautiful beaches, stunning coastal scenery and walks. You can also take the ferry from Kingsbridge to Salcombe (seasonal). Dartmouth is 15 miles away and known for its strong naval heritage, tudor buildings, castle and art galleries. Totnes is 12 miles away and has great independent shopping on the high street and the lovely Dartington Hall Estate.
Kingsbridge is a bustling market town all year round. There are two supermarkets (Tesco and Morrisons) and a selection of independent food shops on the high street. The very popular Crabshell Inn is situated on the edge of the quay and only a 8 minute walk away. The award winning Maha-Bharat Indian restaurant is always busy. The Old Bakery is a lovely setting with great tapas. We can recommend some good restaurants and pubs in and around Kingsbridge whatever your taste. Kings Cinema is a quaint cinema at the top of the high street showing the latest releases and you can have a glass of wine! Fusion Leisure Centre is in the centre of town and features a 25M swimming pool. Harbour House is a Centre for Arts and Yoga with a vegetarian Café, located in the centre of town. The pretty Recreational Grounds in Kingsbridge have two tennis courts available for a small fee. During the summer there's a busy Sunday car boot sale on the edge of the Quay. The estuary is very popular for stand up paddle boarding, with hire and lessons available at The Crabshell Inn. There's a lovely circular walk/run from the Boathouse that takes you along the picturesque estuary (very popular with bird watchers) and through the country lanes. The Kingsbridge In Bloom team keep Kingsbridge looking beautiful and have recently won a number of gold medals.
