About Rebecca Parr
Mile House East is a cottage that has been in our family for nearly 50 years. It is a home from home to my brother and I and our families. The children adore it..
Rebecca Parr purchased this Cottage in 2005
Why Rebecca Parr chose Hawes
Mile House East is a cottage that has been in our family for nearly 50 years and is currently owned by brothers Peter and Andy McKinlay. We have been able to refurbish and upgrade the property but retain the original features in this lovely old house. Last year we were able to extend the first floor into the old barn and create a large second living space as well as a fifth bedroom and second bathroom. Our families regularly use the cottage ourselves and we now have plenty of space. With three growing children in each family every corner of the dales becomes our adventure playground.
What makes this Cottage unique
Wonderful countryside at your front door. Close to both Leyburn - a thriving market town where you can pick up anything you need for your stay. Community owned pub - The Foresters Arms - witin walking distance. Forbidden Corner - voted Best Family Day out 2012 - a few miles away.

Lovely property with idyllic views
Beautiful cottage, very spacious , comfortable and well equipped.
Great for a family ocassion and get together, enough room for all without being on top of each other.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review Mile House East and I am delighted that you and your families enjoyed all that the house has to offer. The spacious, cosy layout with 2 living areas and outside seating area does give plenty of scope for family get togethers, I do hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back.
Well situated, tasteful and thoughtfully equipped
In a quiet, pleasant and convenient part of the Dales, this really comfortable cottage provided everything we needed for 8 family members to happily celebrate a big birthday. Tasteful and with a superb library of books, DVDs and CDs, two excellent TVs which we didn’t need, but which would have been useful had the weather not been so kind, and a good pool table. We happily recommend it.
Clean, comfortable, spacious, well set out cottage with ideal set up for larger group/family.
Rebecca was in touch before our stay to give us information/tips for arrival. Although fairly easy to find from the Leyburn direction the drive onto the spacious parking area for the cottage is a tight turn and steep so to avoid scraping your exhaust we decamped (we were 4 burly men with quite a bit of luggage) and found it easier to drive in/out with just driver (if unloaded and just a couple of adults and children this should be no problem). We were 4 gents on a walking holiday and the set up was ideal. With the 5 spacious bedrooms, 2 lounges (each with a log burner), large well equipped kitchen, 2 bathrooms and outside space for sitting/BBQ etc.
On arrival Rebecca was there to meet us as the weather was particularly bad as it had just had heavy snow storms in the area. She explained that due to the weather and time of year a delivery of oil for the central heating hadn't arrived, to help she had extra logs, electric heaters and lovely home made cake to welcome us and help with the situation.
She gave good advice about the local area and we had some great walks from the cottage and some starting in picturesque villages just a few miles drive. Due to the weather, which was unusually cold (Beast from the East), the extra logs and heaters were needed.
We did have a problem with hot water and a shower in one of the bathrooms which Rebecca quickly got a trades-person in to put right.
Overall the cottage is in a great place with a nice country pub a 15 minute walk (quiz on a Monday night, good food on other nights). Its large comfortable and clean. Good parking/outside space. With a good host in Rebecca who tried her best to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
This was our second visit to Mile House East and we have rebooked again for next year.
It is always immaculately clean on arrival and the manager is very helpful should you have any queries.
It is the best equipped holiday rental I have stayed in, especially the kitchen which has everything you could need.
The living areas are warm, comfortable and spacious and allow people to separate off and do different things, particularly good for larger groups. There are loads of books and games, two tvs and a pool table so plenty to do if it rains. The bedrooms are very comfortable and spacious enough for people to also spend time in during the day.
The front garden is large and younger children will enjoy the swings. The views are lovely and it is very quiet. There are plenty of things to do locally and several walks from the house itself. Very highly recommended.
The cottage provided the perfect setting for a family holiday - six adults and two children across three generations.
There was ample room for everyone, both indoors and out, the children were delighted with the gardens ( with swings ), the pool table and the ample provision of games and books.
The location was excellent with lots to do and see within short distances. The local countryside is beautiful.
The accommodation provided top quality at a very reasonable price.
Fabulous space for 2 families to get together
Take bottled water as we couldn't drink the water all weekend.
We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the house, and all of the space and amenities that it has to offer for family get togethers.
Melmerby village is unusual in that it has its own water supply and this is occasionally subject to discolouration, usually due to heavy rainfall which washes more than average quantities from the hills into the water supply and which brings with it a hint of the peat that it comes from. It is perfectly safe to both drink and wash in and reflects the experience of all those who live in the village.
I do hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back to the house soon.
The nearest airport is Leeds or Newcastle. The house is approximately one and a half hours drive from either.
The nearest train station is Northallerton (East Coast main line stop) which is approximately 45 minutes away.
The cottage is approximately two and half hours driving from Hull port.

Coverdale is one of the most picturesque of the upper dales. It stretches for over thirteen miles from the bleak beauty of Coverhead in the West, where rivulets cut deep into the peaty moorland, to the small cobbled market town of Middleham to the East - famous for its racing stables and associations with Richard III, once an inhabitant of Middleham Castle. To the west of Melmerby the skyline is dominated by the distinctive outline of Great and Little Whernside in the high dale. Closer to the cottage Penhill on Melmerby Moor is within easy striking distance, as are the crags of Roova facing you from across the dale.
The hamlet of Melmerby is surrounded by rich meadows and pastureland that reach down to the banks of the Cover an easy stroll from the holiday cottage. In neighbouring Wensleydale you can find Semer Water, a peaceful lake surrounded by stunning hills. Hawes in the west of the dale is another picturesque market town with lots to see and do. Aysgarth Falls and Redmire Falls provide well marked and easy walking with good amenities and tourist information. Above Aysgarth Falls sits Castle Bolton, one time prison to Mary, Queen of Scots. Move further North, beyond Wensleydale, and you find dramatic Swaledale with historic Richmond at its head.
Good local shops, supermarkets and farmers’ market can be found in nearby Leyburn, and a choice of excellent eateries and traditional pubs in Middleham, and countless other local villages. Carlton with its cosy local pub, the Foresters Arms, serving good food and local ale is within walking distance.
