House set in a beautiful garden, surrounded by olives, vineyard and hills

Bedrooms 4
Space 2,152 sq. ft.
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

4 Bed, 4 bath, kitchen, dining & living room; large gardens & stunning views of Todi and surrounding hills

The large house has 3 sitting rooms, dining room and a large kitchen. There is a wood burning stove for chilly evenings. Throughout there is a tasteful blend of antique and modern furniture and interesting art, all in keeping with the local architecture. The house sleeps 8, with the tower annex(temporally unavailable) sleeping an extra adult or two children for a small extra fee. In the kitchen you will find the full range of modern appliances the enthusiastic cook expects. The house also features 4 bathrooms - 2 en suite. Water is solar heated, backed up by a pellet boiler. Fans are provided in each bedroom; and there is air-conditioning for very hot nights in the master bedroom and tower. The washing machine and tumble dryer make doing laundry simple. There is a large portico & large umbrellas for relaxing away from the midday sun and al fresco dining. There's a wood-fired covered barbeque and a pizza oven by the pool.

The beautiful curved 14x6 metre pool, has a straight swimming lane for serious swimmers, and is solar heated, environmentally friendly and flanked by two ponds. It has spacious, attractive stone surround with flower beds, chairs and umbrella, and is located just across the lawn from the main house.

The property is situated in 12 acres of hillside, with olive groves and vineyard, an attractive garden which is a feature of the property, and a four hole golf course that has 7 tees and plays as 12 challenging holes. Equipment will be provided for those interested (play is at your own risk, but the owner can provide simple instruction on rules and safety).

The house is cosy in winter and cool in Summer due to the three hundred year old thick walls. Furniture it is spacious, cool home for your holiday set in the stunning gardens, of a working farm nestled under the hilltop village of Monte Castello di Vibio with stunning views of Todi, just 8km across the river Tiber. There are two ponds with lots of wild life that are landscaped with the attractive swimming pool. We are, incidentally, located 60 plus km away from the active earthquake zone.

David and Jenny, live in the smaller second house on the property (it's 80 metres away, near the top of the property), and the farmer and his family live next door to them. So the property always has a caretaker on site who will provide fresh vegetables when they are available.

These other homes are visible on the video.

About Jennifer R Anderson

David and Jenny are retired doctors who grew up in England, & trained in Scotland. They have three sons and six grandchildren. David was an academic physician, and former Professor, and Jenny a General Practitioner. For many years they worked in Manchester, and then moved to Hong Kong for 14 years. David is a member (currently President) of Todi Rotary Club, and has been a fanatical collector of Hongshan jade (which he collected in Hong Kong).

Jennifer R Anderson purchased this farmhouse in 2003

Why Jennifer R Anderson chose Monte Castello di Vibio

David and Jenny bought Le Favette in 2003 as they wanted to return to Europe from Hong Kong to retire which they did in 2006, and they could not have found a better place. They love the rolling hills and the exhilarating view they have of Todi, one of the finest local towns with stunning architecture sometimes described as having the most beautiful piazza in Italy . The spire of Todi's San Fortunato Church gives a stunning sky line and the beautiful colours as the sun sets on the town rivals the winter days when the town floats on swirling cloud. They love the local town of Monte Castello di Vibio with its tiny theatre, said to be the smallest working theatre in the world. The town has it own medieval festival and sagra (food festival) along with others in local towns, all of which are great fun to participate in.

This is a perfect centre for exploring the many wonders of Umbria, which is just as interesting as its more famous neighbour Tuscany (and less crowded). Interesting historic towns within a 50 km radius include Orvieto, Perugia, Assisi, Trevi, Spello, Spoleto, Foligno, Bevagna and Montefalco. Near Terni to the south are the stunning falls at Marmora, open at specific times for viewing. For the wine connoiseur there are many fine viticulturas to visit. In the summer there is always a sagra nearby for inexpensive local food, and there are many excellent restaurants nearby. There are also a number of local music and jazz festivals. Two hours drive away is the famous Piano Grande, with sensational scenery and summer flowers, mountain hikes, and artist's paradise and the town of Norcia to be seen on the way home. There is a convenient coach to Rome from nearby Ponte Rio for a relaxing day trip to the Italian capital. Many of our visitors alternate a relaxing day lounging by the pool with days of exhausting and exhaustive cultural visits! Two weeks stay is therefore ideal.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The property is a small holding with 400 olive trees with both black and white grapes, which they ferment into wine and bottle for their own consumption - and are very happy to share with guests. Danilo and Helena, the resident farmers, also live on the property, work the land and look after the chickens. Very good vegetables are grown and when they are ready, they are delighted to give you some tomatoes, lettuces etc. and from the chickens some fresh eggs, when they are available. David has developed a 4 hole golf course and a Sunday morning is a must to try out your skills. The 14 metre pool, croquet, tree house, and swings give leisure pastimes for all generations and the two lily ponds are a haven of wildlife that the children love. Last but not least the two dogs are winners for children as they are very gentle and many anxious children have been converted into dog lovers!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family had the most wonderful, relaxing holiday at Le Favette. The villa is spotlessly clean and contains everything you could want. The location is stunning and although we ventured out a few times, we loved just lounging around the pool soaking up the sun and enjoying the magnificent views which could not be bettered. David and Jenny are great hosts, always there when you need them, but very discreet. Helena and Danilo provide very tasty vegetables from the garden and are very friendly, although our lack of Italian often made conversing difficult....and the 9 year old has not stopped talking about them. Nicer, friendlier dogs you could not find!

We hope to revisit within the next couple of years!

Becky, Bristol

We had a wonderful week at Le Favette at the end of July. A wonderful setting, great accommodation, beautiful pool and generous hosts. A particular high point was the cooking lesson with Flavia - greatly enjoyed by chefs and eaters alike.

Traditional house with panoramic views and fantastic pool

  • 4 of 5

The villa is lovely with great views and a fabulous pool, pizza oven and gardens. We had a good holiday but I think the description on the website isn't really clear. It does sleep 8 but in 5 bedrooms: 2 double, 1 twin and two singles. This was a pleasant surprise as was the covered car port. However the pool isn't private as you share it with the owners and their guests. I'd suggest a minor update to the description.

Idyllic Italy

  • 5 of 5

Le Favette just might be the ultimate setting for an Italian vacation. The landscape is stunning, the surroundings peaceful, with a soundtrack of beautiful birdsong and happy frogs who live amongst the lilypads in the pond next to the pool. The house is lovingly and comfortably decorated, a great size for a larger group, with plenty of space for privacy. Hosts Jenny and David are gracious and friendly (as are their canine cohosts, Ah Choi and Charlie). The location is perfect for visiting Assisi or Orvieto, and Todi, the nearest town, is only a 10 minute drive. Or get your morning exercise with a 20 minute walk up the hill to the lovely village of Montecastello di Vibio, where you can drink your cappucino at the piazza with an unbeatable panorama of Todi across the valley.

We were tempted to toss a few coins in the frog pond to ensure our return!

Excellent location - exceptionally clean

  • 4 of 5

We had a fantastic time at La Favette the location is beautiful, the swimming pool is fantastic both the views and the fact it is long enough to swim. The villa is spotless, there are so many places I've been where you feel the need to wash everything before you use it that is not the case here.

David & Jenny are perfect hosts, welcoming and helpful but not at all intrusive.

Lovely countryside retreat

  • 4 of 5

We enjoying a relaxing week in this lovely spot in Umbrian countryside.

Villa was a good size with large covered outdoor area. Inside is very rustic but all conveniences provided.

The grounds & pool are stunning - views are amazing and the pool area is beautiful with lovely stone patio / gorgeous gardens & lily pad covered ponds with lots of frogs. Luxury teak sunbeds with deep padded covers were very well used !!

As a family of 4 - dad loved the golf , the little course now plays as 12 holes & our host David invited him to join a couple of games with visiting friends. The children were besotted with Ah Choi & Charlie the very friendly dogs in residence.

We enjoyed the wine & wish it was exported !!

Thanks so much to David & Jenny for extending a very warm welcome before & during our stay.

Loved this villa just 2km from Montevibbio de Castello. Beautifully appointed in spectacular location with stunning views. Lovely hosts David and Jenny were so gracious, especially in our hour of need. We were adopted by the two friendly dogs; and indulged a lot in David's homegrown wine.
