A beautiful, spacious home-from-home. Rated 4 Star Meublée de Tourism by the French Tourist Board - and 5 Stars by our guest reviews!

We fell in love with this lovely original stone farmhouse and bought it in 2006. We renovated the barns to create a 'maison des amis', then we moved in! We now have a beautiful, comfortably furnished home available for friends, family and guests.

We often welcome multiple generations of friends and families who want to have a special holiday together. La Varenne Farmhouse is a beautiful, spacious 4-bedroom property and can comfortably sleep up to 10 people.

Large, airy, comfortable and very well-equipped accommodation on three floors:

- On the ground floor, the breakfast kitchen has a large solid oak table and chairs, and all the equipment we can think of - even an egg-slicer! There's a round floor WC and hand basin in a small inner hallway. The salon has four comfortable sofas facing a wood burning stove, a large flat screen TV and UK and French channels. There are coffee and side tables, book shelves and a piano (which needs a lot of work!)

- Solid wooden stairs lead off the salon to the second floor, Bedroom 1 looks over the pool and garden and has a king size bed, solid wardrobes, drawers and a dressing table. Bedroom 2 has built in wardrobes, drawers, a double bed and double sofa-bed. The main house bathroom, on the landing between the two bedrooms, has a toilet, cupboards and sink; and large bath with shower over.

- The top floor has beautiful original beams. Bedroom 3 has a double bed, solid wardrobe and drawers. Bedroom 4 has four full-size single beds, a large solid wardrobe and drawers. The spacious shower room on this floor has a toilet and sink, is on the landing between the two bedrooms.

There are cots, high chairs, stair safety gates, and lots of plastic crockery available for younger guests. The cots can be installed in any of the bedrooms, as families prefer.

Set on the edge of a tiny rural hamlet in the Beautiful Dordogne countryside, the property borders the River Dronne. Perfect for families and friends. There's a large (10m by 4m) in-ground heated swimming pool with secure fence, patio, deck and sun loungers. A pergola also provides poolside shade and comfortable outdoor seating.

The front of the property faces onto a large private gravelled courtyard with flower borders. The covered paved patio and table are perfect for outdoor dining.

Private off-road parking on the driveway for up to 4 cars.

A relaxing getaway for families and friends, or those who like a little more space.

About Joy and John Milton

We bought La Varenne as a holiday home 'with a project', and love it so much we moved out here 3 years later.

John's retired (although Joy's lists are famous in the village!) and we speak English and French (with Scottish and Yorkshire accents respectively).

We love living in Saint Front la Rivière, and being part of a small, friendly French community. When we were house hunting we thought we wanted to live in the middle of nowhere, but soon realised we want to be on the edge of a small somewhere. La Varenne is the best of both worlds: a tiny hamlet in the stunning, peaceful Dordogne countryside, four proper seasons, a café a 5 minute stroll away, and shops a 5 minute drive.

Flights to visit family in the UK are frequent, inexpensive and short. 1.5 hours from the North or South to Limoges or Bergerac, then an hour's drive from the airport on quiet roads.

We were surprised by how much land we'd bought. We fell in love with the house, and only discovered after our offer was accepted that we would have woodland, an orchard, a field, a pigeonnier, a chicken run, a cave...It's great when we can give guests fresh eggs, or walnuts, or cherries, or apples and say 'yes, they're from our garden'.

We love visiting our local area, and eating out in local restaurants, and are able to suggest places to go from personal experience. We really enjoy helping our guests, whether that's recommending a restaurant, checking a chateau's opening times, or booking a canoeing trip. At the same we value our own and our guests' privacy: we're not far away if we're needed.

Joy still commutes occasionally to work in the UK, but John is a home bird and loves his garden. We caught the French camper van 'virus' and off season we love exploring France.

This is a beautiful part of the world, and we feel very lucky. We hope we can welcome you!

Why Joy and John Milton chose Saint-Front-la-Rivière

We renovated the barn intending to create a maison des amis for family and friends, then we moved in - 'down-sizing'?!! We now have a beautiful 4-bedroomed farmhouse, perfect for families and friends, and anyone who likes a bit more space.

The Dordogne is really lush and green, the scenery is amazing. We didn't look at many houses at all: as soon as we pulled up on the drive at La Varenne, we knew this was home - before we'd even gone inside!

With good internet access, we're able to work from home, and walk, swim or cycle in the afternoon - which is just as well, as the local restaurants are wonderful!

What makes this farmhouse unique

The Dronne Valley is beautiful. We're on the edge of a peaceful hamlet, rather than the middle of nowhere, and are just a short drive from everything we need.

The local café bar is only a 5 minute walk away, and improving our French is a great reason to visit!

The farmhouse is absolutely faultless. It is very spacious and completely spotless with large authentically french bedrooms and every amenity you could wish for, Joy and John welcomed us with open arms and provided lots of information about the surrounding area. The grounds are IDYLLIC and whilst lying by the pool (on very comfortable loungers) all we could hear were birds and other wild life. We spent out evenings playing board games (lots to choose from) and sitting around the large outside table after cooking in the extremely well equipped kitchen. There is a small country pub 5 minutes walk from the house which also did fish and chip tuesdays which was a nice touch. There is a DVD player and english tv which was a bonus for the evenings after a day out, We will DEFINITELY be returning to this beautiful house!

Would highly recommend

We had a fantastic week at La Varenne in August 2018.

We are a group of 2 families with kids of 10-13 years old. There was LOTS of time spent around and in the pool which was fab – a shallow ledge for sitting and reading a book graduating to deeper at the far end.

The house itself is fantastic - we especially liked giving the kids their own floor! The beds are super comfy, and the kitchen was also very well stocked (a personal bug-bear of mine!) The bbq was awesome (and very well used!) and the provision of plenty of bath and pool towels was a treat.

Having a restaurant/bar within walking distance was great and we went for delicious pizzas and a lovely bottle of red. We also enjoyed visiting the stunning caves at Grotte de Villars (just down the road) which has almost ‘Disney-made’ stalactites and stalagmites as well as original cave paintings. We also visited the lake beach at Le Grand Étang De Saint Estephe where the kids loved pulling us across the lake. Local supermarket and great bakery also very convenient.

Joy and John were just such fantastic hosts and lovely people to boot. They gave us our privacy whilst being on hand to answer a question - they couldn't be more helpful. Some great memories - thank you.

A very pleasant time and a great location

Had a lovely time, the gite was excellent with everything you would need, a great pool and gardens. There is plenty to do in the area for kids including canoeing, zip wire and a Great Lake with its own beach.

The hosts were very helpfully and nothing was to much trouble. We would have no problem in going again, loved it.

Tranquil perfection!

A wonderfully well equipped, clean, and attractive gîte in an idyllic setting - perfect for rest and relaxation. Lovely, welcoming hosts who were on hand to help if you needed them, and invisible if you didn't.

La Varenne is well situated for going on little walks into the countryside and for exploring many beautiful towns, villages, and places of interest in the region.

Just as we had a wonderful stay our three year old loved "this beautiful house", and wanted to stay forever, which speaks volumes. Would highly recommend this place.

Great location for a family holiday

We were a family party of nine, with ages ranging from 11 to 86. Everybody loved the swimming pool, the local villages, the market at Bramtome, the evening party at St Pardoux, great restaurants, the cycling and the local bar within walking distance. We had everything you need from a French holiday - good food, good wine and good company! John and Joy were very friendly and helpful hosts. They organised an excellent wine tasting which has converted us all to organic wines - so much better for you, meaning you can drink more!

We also loved the peace and tranquility of the area - a traditional farming region. What bliss to be able to walk, cycle or drive, and see so few cars on the road!

Beautiful quiet rural location.

A lovely large and well equipped place that even boasts its own egg slicer. Well laid out for families with a great pool to relax next to. Very helpful owners with some great recommendations and local knowledge that they were keen to impart. If you are looking for relaxing rural France, it doesn't get much better than this.

Amazing holiday despite the weather!

We had such a lovely holiday at la varenne. Joy and John (and of course the chickens) made us feel so welcome in their home. Welcome drinks and organising a wine tasting evening were just two of the things to make us feel so welcome.

Jack had the best time, he loved the swimming pool and the swing. The house is perfect for a family or families, there is so much room. I don't know how we convinced Jack to only sleep in one of the four beds in his room.

We hope to be able to return one day.

We have several basic adult bicycles available f.o.c. for guests who'd like to cycle for their bread. For more serious cyclists, there are excellent cycle hire facilities close by who also drop and collect.
