The town dates back to 600BC and is famed for its strategic involvement in the discovery of the Americas and is the birthplace of the Conquistadors including Hernán Cortes (1485-1547) who conquered the Aztec Empire, Francisco Pizarro (1471-1541) who conquered the Inca Empire and founded Lima and Francisco de Orellana (1464-1536) who discovered the Amazon.
