Hopewell Barn has been converted to the highest standard with underfloor heating throughout the ground floor. The sitting-room has an oak floor and also a wood burning stove. The large marble floored kitchen has huge windows and several skylights, so there's loads of natural light, making it warm, bright and friendly. The property has commanding views across the Wye Valley and is adjacent to 20 acres of fields belonging to the owners. The garden is enclosed and gated, but not pet proof. Maximum of 2 well behaved dogs allowed at £10 per dog.

About Jonathan Cockburn
We have lived in the Wye Valley for over 30 years. Recently we converted our old barn into a fabulous holiday home. We only live four fields away, so if you need us, we can come and help out at a moment's notice; but we will not be breathing down your neck either! We have three children, but they have all left home now. We still have a small flock of friendly sheep, which you may see from time to time in one of the fields next to the barn.
Jonathan Cockburn purchased this Barn in 2005
Why Jonathan Cockburn chose Saint Briavels
Hopewell Barn is located in an officially designated area of outstanding natural beauty. One of the reasons why we decided to convert our old barn was because it has such brilliant views across the valley. The Wye valley is fabulous for walking, cycling, canoeing and riding and there is alot to explore and see in this area. The local walks are all superb and there is a very popular community run Village Shop only half a mile down our lane. This is the place to visit if you are looking for a rural retreat on the edge of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. Also, although it is in a peaceful area, this part of the Wye valley has good links to the motorway network so it's relatively easy to get to.
What makes this Barn unique
Hopewell Barn is a place to come to recharge your batteries; so by the time you leave you will feel completely relaxed and ready to take on the world again. The barn has lots of windows and skylights so is always bright and cheerful no matter what the weather and if you don't feel like going for a walk you can always stay in and snuggle up by the wood burning stove and enjoy the views with a warm drink in your hand!
We loved our stay at Hopewell Barn. The rooms are attractively designed, and comfortable, and there are thoughtful touches to make the guest feel welcome and well looked after. The views from the kitchen are stupendous, and can be enjoyed whether washing up or stretched out on the sofa. There are beautiful (hilly) walks that can be taken straight from the barn and we appreciated the local shop and also the pub, where we had great fun taking part in the pub quiz. We also appreciated all the wild life that we were able to see. From the barn we saw fallow deer, a fox, buzzards, a kestrel, thrushes, blackbirds, pheasant, robin, crow/rook, swifts, sparrows, a woodpecker, and in the area around we saw a siskin, bullfinches, nuthatches, a bank vole and a wild boar. There is plenty to do and see in the area, and we have every intention of returning to this lovely place.
Space, light, views, walks - all excellent. A lovely old barn, warm and comfortable. Close enough to walk to the village community shop, village hall and pub. Lots of footpaths from the door.
Great views, and lovely barn. The kitchen was fantastic, a real family room with views from all windows, great facilities and perfect for a break away.
a very well presented cottage set in the most beautiful countryside
I have stayed in a few cottages but none are as well presented as this one. The kitchen has everything you need, space, functionality and that wow factor when you 1st walk in. The living room was a great place to relax and the wood burner gave it that cosy feel. The bedrooms are fresh and bright and just felt new and the same could be said about the bathrooms. Both bathrooms had great showers and just a pleasure to be in after a day of February storms which plagued us the whole holiday. All in all the weather was the only bad point during the whole time and I'd like to return some day and see that beautiful landscape at its best.
You can get to some lovely beaches in about 75 minutes (e.g. Southerndown, near Ogmore by Sea). For swimming, the River Monnow at Tregate Bridge near Monmouth is idyllic. There is an outdoor pool at Lydney. A good viewing place for the Severn Bore is 35 minutes drive away. Please bring your own swimming/beach towels.
The property is not well served by public transport, therefore it is essential to arrive by car. It is possible to take a bus from Brockweir to either Monmouth or Chepstow, but please note the bus stop is over a mile away. There are stations at Lydney (5 miles away) and Chepstow.
Hopewell Barn lies just over a mile from Brockweir village and the River Wye and only half a mile from the Village Shop. Tintern Abbey is just over two miles away, Chepstow 8 and Monmouth 10. Bristol is about 35 minutes and Cardiff an hour.
The community run Village Shop is very popular and has a cafe, terrace and a children's play area. Brockweir has a local pub and Tintern has a number of pubs, restaurants and a visitor centre and The Crown at Whitebrook offers fabulous cordon bleu cooking. St Briavels is just over a mile away and also has a pub which serves food. There is an outdoor adventure centre with aerial runways etc in the Forest of Dean, as well as the Pedalabikeaway Centre, with miles of cycling trails.
