About Liz Gilchrist

I live in East Kilbride with my partner, Euan and 2 children, Adam and Emma. We have holidayed on the Ardurmuchan peninsula for years, loving the peacefulness of the area, beautiful beaches and scenic hill walks. Euan is a furniture maker, specialising in reclaimed Scottish Hard woods (Tailormadefurniture.co.uk). I am in banking, so love to get away to Strontian as you can imagine!

Liz Gilchrist purchased this bungalow in 2015

Why Liz Gilchrist chose Fort William & Lochaber

We bought this property as we recognised Strontian as being in the perfect location for a varied family holiday. We can get to the beaches of Sanna, the hills of Glencoe, the picturesque Island of Mull or Fort William in an hour, or we can take a walk through ancient oak lands or by Loch Sunart straight from the door. When we viewed the cottage it was obvious the previous owners had invested great love and attention in the cottage having only built it 5 years previously. It had a warmth and welcoming feel that felt like coming home. Previous visitors in the visitors book all spoke of their love for Bramble and their desire to return. The cottage has a shop, cafe and hotel within a few minutes walk and we liked the benefit of being "away from it all" but with convenience on the door step. All locals have been friendly and the small town has a real community feel that is missing in today's busier towns. We love getting off the Corran Ferry on the peninsula, feeling our modern day stresses melt away safe in the knowledge that in 20 minutes we will be Enjoying the peace and warmth of Bramble Cottage.

What makes this bungalow unique

Bramble Cottage is set in an ideal situation. It is only metres away from all local amenities but has no passing traffic. It offers privacy with a fenced front garden and has gardens to the rear - so perfect for children or pets. It is situated on the edge of a woodland offering fantastic walks. It is in the ideal location to enjoy a varied holiday, with majestic Glencoe, the scenic Island of Mull, the glorious sandy beaches of Sanna all within an hour, or fabulous walks from the door. The cottage has generously proportioned rooms and is wheel chair friendly. We aim to provide a home from home that you will want to return to again and again. We try to take the stress out by providing linens, towels, kitchen basics such as washing up liquid, a complimentary welcome pack with fresh milk in the fridge. We hope you will love Bramble as we do!

Holiday Cottage in Strontian, ideal for couples, families and pet friendly
average rating of 5.0 based on 17 reviews

A lovely, spacious and impeccably kept property.

  • 5 of 5

The owners of the property had been meticulous in anticipating visitors' needs, right down to the beautiful flowers decorating the home and very generous basket of goodies on our arrival! The cottage was spacious, uncluttered and combined simple good taste with great comfort. We appreciated the kind enquiries from the gentleman who supplied local help, who made us feel welcome also. We loved living next to the community woodland, and enjoyed both local walks direct from the cottage and further trips sight seeing in the area: a great place to stay.

The property is in an ideal location with amenities close by. It's spotlessly clean and tidy.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is in a ideal location being a short distance from the lochside and walks into the picturesque countryside. It has amenities close by such as village shop, children's play area and hotel with bar.

Aside from this the owners go above and beyond to ensure you have any enjoyable stay in the cottage. The cottage is spotlessly clean and tidy with a welcome pack provided and plenty of information about the cottage and local area.

In short the cottage is one of the best we have stayed in and we are looking forward to returning soon.

Peace and tranquilitiy

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week in Bramble Cottage. It is very spacious and bright, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The layout of the cottage is pefect. The garden and outside space is very private and peaceful and the woodland walk that starts behind the cottage is highly recommended. It is a great base for climbing the hills in the area and in easy reach of the beautiful beaches. The cottage is very easy to book and the everything about it is relaxing. Any locals we met in shops or tourist office were helpful and friendly. We would definitely return and recommend it to anyone we know.

Home from home in a village setting

  • 5 of 5

Strontian is an ideal location for touring Ardnamurchan and also providing the ease to get to Glencoe, Ben Nevis and for further touring.

The cottage is very clean, warm and generously kitted out. Every time we thought we needed something we'd open a drawer or a cupboard door and there it would be!

There is an enclosed garden ideal for dogs but a small note of caution if you have Norfolk x Jack Russell sized dogs they will be able to get through the fence with ease as we found out! However, I believe the owners are looking to sort that out. Good news for our return visit :)

The cottage has very efficient central heating keeping it very cozy. Very nice layout around a large hallway all on one level.

The owners left a thoughtful welcome basket including some treats for the dogs.

Strontian has a couple of little shops and cafe (which we didn't try) and the hotel nearby does food of an evening (again we didn't try it but only because we have dietary issues nothing to do with the hotel).

Lots of walks right outside the door or plenty of places to go and see nearby.

Thank you Liz and Euan

We'll be back :)

Loch Sunart is within a few minutes walk. At 31 kilometres (20 miles) it is the longest sea loch in the Highlands and a popular destination for kayakers, canoeists and sailors.

There are beaches nearby at Inversanda - less than 15 minutes by car along the main A861 - Ardtoe (around 16 miles or 30 minutes by car) and the magnificent sandy expanse of Sanna Bay - well worth the hour's drive along the full length of the peninsula.

Given the rural nature of the area, the use of a car is essential. Car rental is available in Fort William which has a mainline train station connecting it to Glasgow with 3 services a day in each direction.

Glasgow Airport is around two and a half hours away by car whilst Inverness Airport to the North is approximately two hours drive from the cottage.

A short crossing on the Corran Ferry (15miles/20minutes by car) connects with the main A82. By this route Fort William is 23 miles from Bramble Cottage, Glencoe 22 miles and Oban - with ferries to Mull, Coll, Tiree, Barra and South Uist - 50 miles from Strontian.

Ardnamurchan Point Lighthouse - the most Westerly point on the British mainland - 35 miles.

Lochaline - for ferry to Mull and onward trips to Iona and Staff - is a picturesque 30 minute drive on the A884.

Further Details:

The village is well served by a mini market, post office & general store, cafe, three hotels - two of which have public bars, and a tearoom & crafts workshop.

Petrol and diesel are available just moments from the holiday cottage and cycle hire can also be arranged in the village.

There is a well-resourced community centre with a library which is open 6 days a week including two evenings. The centre also provides community sports facilities including a gym and badminton courts.

There is a cash machine in the mini-market in the village centre.

A seasonal Tourist Information office operates from April to October and is open six days a week.
