Why Maureen O'Donoghue chose Simat de la Valldigna
'Casa Maja', which means 'House Beautiful', instantly cast its spell over me from its position overlooking a valley bright and lush with orange groves to the mountains. This was the answer to my dreams of moving to Spain. Spain had bewitched me during holidays long before with its high spirited and generous people, always ready for fun and fiesta - like the Irish! - with its music and dance, its exotic landscapes and historic castles, its ancient monasteries and stunning modern architecture, with its blue skies and endless golden beaches, with all its colourful traditions. Peaceful and private, in 'Casa Maja' I had found the perfect place for a writer - and the perfect paradise for friends and guests to holiday.
What makes this Villa unique
Casa Maja is available as a vacation chalet from Easter to November and over Christmas and NY.. From here it is easy to spend days hiking, cycling, horse riding, bird watching, playing golf, or sight-seeing and the 50 kilometres of Costa Azahar beaches are within 20 minutes' drive. The house sleeps a total of six, provides air-conditioning, fans, satellite TV and wi-fi internet access. The large pool has a special shallow area for small children. The village of Pla de Corrals is just within walking distance and has two bars serving food. Historic Xativa is the nearest town with a magnificent castle, atmospheric old quarter, good restaurants and vibrant night life. At Casa Maja guests awake every morning to the unspoilt paradise of the real Spain.

Private and quiet
Very private and peaceful with beautiful views over the valley.
Nice, cheap ,little bar in the village for lunch.
Great views! Lovely Pool
Great pool and sun terrace. Garden a little untidy, so we didn't use it, also a little worried about the drop from the wall to the pool from the garden, although Maureen did warn us about this when she gave us the tour. Access to the garden is restricted, so it was no problem to keep the children away.
A large well furnished house with a nice pool in lovely countryside with a charming host
Casa Maja is well appointed and comfortable house in lovely countryside about 15 minutes drive from the pleasant small city of Xativa. The owner, Maureen O'Donoghue, is nearby and a hugely helpful presence with excellent suggestions about restaurants, secluded beaches, and in our case a local vet for the dog to have his pet passport stamped before returning, as well as stories of the area. The view from the terrace over orange and pomegranate groves with the hills beyond is fabulous and it was tempting often to just stay put and look at the changing play of light with an occasional dip in the pool. Nearby Xativa is a lovely small city with plane trees lining the streets of the newer section and a well preserved older section. A great place to wander, with some good restaurants but no mass tourism. There is also a frequent train to Valencia from there (about 1 hour away, as by car). Some good nearby wine growing areas, too. For those who want the coast, it is about 30 minutes by car, but this is a well developed coast whose resorts are lacking in much charm: though with few foreigner visitors. If you really want to take it easy, the next village (about 5 mins drive) has a fabulous butcher, a good fruit and veg shop and a small supermarket and really meets most needs. From the house, a 20 minute walk takes you down to the cafe and restaurant in the local village and it is nice place to linger over a coffee or beer before strolling back. There are some excellent walks on the long distance footpaths but we were not overly ambitious here. For adults (and their dog) who want to combine relaxation, a little gentle sightseeing, and a few walks in a place away from the hoards it would be difficult to imagine anywhere better- especially as we were blessed with glorious weather. I suspect teens would feel it too tranquil. We were made to feel extremely welcome and found the house had everything we wanted, including peace. You are not isolated but the loudest sound is the village dogs barking in the valley below.
Fantastic spot for a relaxing holiday.
Casa Maja is well named as it really is a beautiful house in a truly lovely landscape. We stayed there for the first week in September and the sun shone every day. We stocked up at a supermarket in the nearby town of Xativa about 10 k away and didn't stray too far from the villa as we were after a week of just chilling out - reading, swimming and enjoying a few cocktails by the pool... bliss. We had a few trips to Simat de la Valldigna where there is a beautiful monastery that's well worth a visit. The house has everything you need and Maureen is the perfect hostess... available for anything you need but never intrusive. It was a pleasure meeting her and I would also recommend reading her novels. I finished Jedder's Land when I was there and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I so enjoyed meeting you both at Casa Maja and the craic! Thank you for writing about your stay. I do love when visitors arrive from the rat race and are relaxed and happy within a couple of days as this beautiful, peaceful valley works its magic. Thank you also for recommending 'Jedder's Land'.
Fantastic holiday family villa
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Maja with our 3 children. Plenty of space and the pool and terrace were very enjoyable and relaxing. The view was wonderful and really felt like we'd 'got away'. Maureen was on hand to give good travel advice too.
